Portsmouth Players Not Paid
Portsmouth Players Not Paid
Monday, 30th Jan 2012 17:44

Portsmouth’s players have been told they will not be paid their monthly wages, according to reports this afternoon. The situation could have a bearing on whether the Blues are successful in landing some or all of their three Pompey targets — keeper Stephen Henderson, central defender Jason Pearce (pictured) and defender or midfielder Joel Ward.

Manager Michael Appleton is understood to have informed the squad of the situation, which relates to a bank account being frozen by HMRC, who have issued a winding up order against the Hampshire club over £1.6 million in unpaid PAYE. Portsmouth will be looking to address the bank account situation tomorrow with their court hearing on February 20th.

Pompey’s ongoing situation could see them sell a number of players on deadline day, although not necessarily Town’s targets with Australian winger Ryan Williams in talks with Fulham regarding a £500,000 switch, Dave Kitson apparently interesting Brighton and Luke Varney linked with Wolves.

Speaking earlier today, Blues boss Paul Jewell admitted that he is unsure how many of his targets he might land: “Whether we get one player, two players or three players is still up in the air.”

Town are reported to have been talks with the administrator of Portsmouth’s parent company Convers Sports Initiatives but with Pompey officials so far having refused to agree to the proposed deal.

This is presumably what Jewell was referring to earlier today when he was talking about Pompey's situation: “Complicated is not the word. It’s complicated to the nth degree.”

The apparent escalation of Portsmouth's financial crisis would appear to rule out Blues skipper Grant Leadbitter or defender Damien Delaney wanting to move to Fratton Park, a possibility that Jewell said wasn't on the table as far as he was aware in any case.

Elsewhere, former Blues loanee Keith Andrews is reported to have handed in a transfer request at Blackburn.

It’s long been known that the Irishman wants to move away from Ewood Park but manager Steve Kean had hoped to reintegrate him back into his squad after his return from Portman Road earlier in the month.

The Blues were interested in bringing the 31-year-old, who has 18 months remaining on his contract, back to Suffolk but may be less keen since landing Ryan Stephenson from Hearts over the weekend.

I agree with Retroblue, smacks of desperation on our part. Still at least we will still have Tommy Smith to get us out of trouble.......oh and pj can have a game of 1 Potatoe, 2 Potatoe to decide who's going in goal!

Ipswich - despite dire results - may prove more attractive for those players now. That's good news.

i must admit im a little bit concerned that if this deal goes belly up we are left with the squad of mainly dross to fight for survival.

Sharp 1.8m to Southampton. What the hell were we playing at in the summer not to close the deal.

A football club being run by non football people and it shows.

Just look at the board of directors on the club website, more of Evans's cronies.

Dark days

A football club runned by monkys.

So we have had 30 days and signed 1 player for £50,000 on a 18 month contract.

PJ 'Building for the future'

What a shambles.

I do feel for PJ in some way he wants the players to come in, but OUR OWNER AND BOARD Can't do the deals whilst other clubs can?

PJ should of sorted our problems last summer and It wasn't done, and now we are staring @ league 1 right in the face.

Dark days indeed.

It appears we wont get these three and are dangerously close to the trap door, so not good times ahead. A win is a must against the spammers.

getting fed up about the lack of progress at any of this. like many i am concerned that we're going to end up with no defensive signing's. i hope that if pompey don't play ball we've other target's lined up.

Interesting - looks like no to the Pompey players then but that should never have been our main plan anyway despite the players obvious ability. I hope I am wrong but after the fiasco of the last five transfer windows I suspect we're in for yet more disappointment.

Ever since Shane Supple left there has been a nagging doubt in my mind whether our players consider themselves to be professionals, or just lads having a lark at our expense. Perhaps the wrong players are being paid in this situation?

Come on guys 'man up' you know damn well that there will be disappointment etched on our faces by deadline time tomorrow, we will stay up by the skin of our teeth and go through the same old fiasco again this summer. It's a case of same old, same old you know I'm right now!!!!!
JEWELL AND CLEGG OUT!!!!!

alagrvefan I think we have a good chance of staying up so I would like to remain positive and getting behind the team will increase our chances. We are starting the sign to right kind of players now after learning a valuable lesson in the past couple of seasons and next season could well be a different story if we stay up. Even if we do miss on getting more permanent signings this window then at least we have the cash to get some loans in as a short term measure which has to be good enough to avoid the drop. Not being a poor club enables us to pay higher wages to attract better loan players which will be worth it to avoid the drop but as I say - a short term solution for this season.

I am curious about the logistics that would be entailed should these players and their clubs (and perhaps others e.g. Wallace) agree to join. Presumably they have to get down to Portman Road/Playford Road, finalise terms and details and then complete satisfactory fitness tests. Meanwhile, we have to focus on preparation for a vital game tomorrow versus the table topping Hammers. Sounds like a mad scramble if we pull it off.

Tomorrow really could be a make or break day not just for Jewell but for ITFC.
The fact is we need a defence. Please 2 new CB's and a RB at the very least. Its going to be a very tough road from now until the end of the season but we will only survive if the defence is sorted.Whether you're a Jewell 'in or out' it is clear to all of us that this HAS to be priority and if PJ doesn't get this sorted we will be lucky to stay up.Clean sheets and nicking the odd goal to win will suit me fine.Whether the Portsmouth trio sign or not i hope PJ has other irons in the fire otherwise for all our enthusiasm and effort on the pitch and terraces the players and fans will be let down by the lack of it off the pitch.
COYB lets have revenge for the play off semi's under Royle!

We might not get all 3 players or even none if Portsmouth choose to sell Varney, Kitson and Williams and get good price for them - the sale would be sufficient to pay off part of their debt and temporarily cover some of their expenses.

From Portsmouth's point of view, make sense for them to sell the supposedly higher earners and keep the younger ones; presumably the 3 we are targeting are not high on their wage list.

Plus selling the 3 would mean losing the spine of their defence.

Of course, moot point if the club is going down the pits anyway...

So bily sharp has gone to soton Pearce would rather not get Paid an stay at a club that might not exist in a couple of weeks and we still only have one signing to show and it's deadline day with no apparent plan B. And to top if all off we have a gams tonight so jewell will be otherwise engaged so that leaves our dwindling chances of signing some1 in the totally incapable hands of clegg!!!!

If Portsmouth are in the state it appears ITFC are in the driving seat.

ITFC offer to pay the £2.0m transfer fees upfront, how can portsmouth turn it down?

i expect us to be disapointed come the deadline, as we always are, i, like most on here was really looking forward to this transfer window with interest. after all we know the areas that need strengthing, so targets should have been indentified months ago, not as though we have had 3 defenders go down suddenly with horror injuries, our failings have been obvious for a very long time, the last recognised rb, and in my opinion a good one was david wright, sorry to keep pointing out the obvious to the well informed on here, but some on here are blind to the facts. i do feel a little sorry for jewell, i really believe that publicly evans backs jewell, but behind the scenes its a different story and jewell is on borrowed time. they need to kick out clegg, asap , he is a massive problem to this club, he is no football man, clueless, anyone else hear him last night on late kick off? talking about the academy, really fear for our once great club, breaks my heart was is happening to our club, we are in free fall.... :(

It's all been said before - some very bad calls being made consistently from the top and something needs to change quickly.
