O'Connor Joins Cork
O'Connor Joins Cork
Thursday, 2nd Feb 2012 11:34

Former Blues left-back or left midfielder Shane O’Connor has joined his hometown club Cork City. O’Connor, who hit out at Town boss Paul Jewell in a Twitter outburst last night, had his contract at Portman Road terminated by mutual consent earlier in the month and had been interesting Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers in addition to the Leesiders and a number of English sides.

The 21-year-old said: “I did have other offers, but I am very pleased to have signed for Cork City. I would know some of the players here, I played with Gearóid Morrissey at international level and obviously played with Colin Healy at Ipswich, and Colin was a big influence on my decision to sign here.

“I was at a few games when I was younger, before I went to England, and I am aware of the history of the club and some of the players who have played here before. I want to enjoy my football, but I’m also ambitious and I wanted to sign for a club where I believe we can challenge to win things, and I believe I can do that at Cork City.”

Cork City boss Tommy Dunne added: “I think we have done well in the transfer window this year. He is an exciting left-footed player, and gives the team a nice balance.

“As a club, we are growing, we are trying to progress and get ourselves back to where we were previously but without the problems that entailed. He is direct, he is fit, he delivers the ball well from the wing, and I think he will be a good addition to our squad.

“He’s another Cork lad, and I think that is important that we have a lot of Cork lads in the squad to have a team that the supporters can identify with. There was competition from other clubs in Ireland, so we are delighted that he has come here.”

I hope he fails in every way possible, as for your tweets, you can go ............
And for all those calling for him to be in the squad, just read his tweets and we can all see that he is exactly the type of person we don't want at the club.
For all the doubters, we don't know what is going on behind the scenes and O'Connors attitude will be the main reason he didn't make it at Ipswich goodbye and good ridance Shane, the attitude of players like you will be the reason why we lost a promising young keeper in Supple!

I really wanted it to work for him, but clearly he has some attitude issues.. you don't hit out, publicly, at an ex-employer like that. ESPECIALLY not when you're in such a highly-publicised industry.

Good luck to him though. Hopefully the Twitter thing was a stupid mistake and one he'll move past. I'm sure he'll be back in England at some point; solid and determined young player imo.

I don't think that an ill-advised but understandable tweet about his frustration at a manager who has failed to pick him constitutes proof of an attitude problem. I'm sure when his attitude has been called into question on here in the past, Phil has stated that that was not an issue.

Shane's case is a strange one. He looked decent, but maybe he just didn't develop in the way was expected. It happens. I was brilliant at 14, but was quite sh*te by the time I was 15.

good luck playing your third world football, failed at liverpools academy, failed at ipswich, failed to get a deal at countless league 2 clubs, will probably fail at cork. the only fc where he will make the grade is kfc

I liked the look of him when Keane signed him. Shame it didn't work out. PJ can't tell a good player when he sees one. Good luck Shane.

Not many people saying sorry to Jewell, they were soon on his back for not playing and then letting go one of our brightest players.

Now O'Connor has shown his true colours and people may now see why he was not played and then released

Newboy ... you sound personally bitter ,not good enough to make the grade ?
As a fan i want us to win games, so hopefully we will do that and Jewell wont be sacked ,you must have been gutted at the 5-1 win ?

I have been an advocate of Shane (who had earned himself a 2 year contract) in the past but must admit that his tweeting history doesn't exactly ooze with maturity. Grow up lad....and go out and utilise the (football) talent that you have been blessed with.
