Smith Wins Cap as New Zealand Lose
Smith Wins Cap as New Zealand Lose
Wednesday, 29th Feb 2012 10:06

Town defender Tommy Smith won his ninth full New Zealand cap as the All Whites lost 3-2 to Jamaica in Auckland. The Blues centre-half went close to grabbing an injury time equaliser with a header which flew over the bar.

Smith, who is reported to have impressed against the Reggae Boyz, now faces a mammoth three-leg flight back to Suffolk in time to report for training at Playford Road on Friday morning.

With Ibrahima Sonko now fit after his dislocated rib, Blues boss Paul Jewell may take Smith’s travels into consideration when he picks his side for Saturday’s home game against Bristol City.

The Robins' on-loan West Brom striker Chris Wood, who scored one of New Zealand's goals against Jamaica, faces a similar trip.

Bristol City manager Derek McInnes also has other selection issues with midfielder Marvin Elliott (Achilles) and striker David Clarkson (ankle) sidelined for the rest of the season and midfielder Cole Skuse out due to a broken and dislocated toe.

Midfielder Kalifa Cisse and centre-halves Stephen McManus and Lewin Nyatanga are also all being assessed ahead of Saturday's match.

The only other Town player away on international duty at present is Josh Carson, who is hoping to win his third full cap when Northern Ireland take on Norway in a friendly in Belfast this evening (Sky Sports Three, 7.30pm).

KingChopra did you read the report...no of course you didn't, it say's Smith 'impressed' a big word for you I know, it means he did good.
I'm proud when our players represent their country, Smith is still learning his trade but is a promising young player, how about we get behind him!!!!

KingChopra, sorry didn't realise Smith was playing in goal!!
Football is a team game, all goals conceded are not always the fault of one of the centre half's, try to pay attention!!

Hey Kingchopra, go easy on our young players! Don't forget Smith is probably the only town player who has played in the World Cup Finals!

If I can recall, the All Whites didn't lose a single game in the group stages and Smih was a regular in the team. But 3 pts from 3 draws wasn't enough for them to qualify for last 16

Give this young man a break! Do you know how long it takes to fly from NZ to UK with 3 transits? Give Smith some respect please!

Love Smiths eagerness and his love of the club and hope he will improve with age as most defenders do but would definately have Sonko ahead of him at the moment

I love the way that some people on here write a stupid statement, can't justify what they've said, then try and make out it's a joke....don't they KingChopra?

Well done Smith, good to see someone dedicated enough to their football and country to not develop some spurious injury and pull out like most of the young England players do these days. With what he has had to endure from the manager and stands this season and still put in 100% when called upon then good for him.

Apparently he impressed, he can impress all he wants, but 3 goals against a dire Jamaica outfit, that doesn't sound good on the ears!
