Ramsey's Boys at Barnsley Game Friday, 16th Mar 2012 15:26
Six of Sir Alf Ramsey’s squad which took the club to its only First Division championship in 1961/62 will be back at Portman Road for the Barnsley game on March 31st. This year is the 50th anniversary of Town’s title, which came in the Blues’ first season in the top flight after they had won the Second Division the previous year.
Skipper Andy Nelson, Larry Carberry, John Compton, Doug Moran, Ray Crawford and Ted Phillips will be the guests of honour for the Tykes' visit and will be presented to the crowd prior to kick off. The annual ex-players’ dinner takes place at Portman Road the evening before.
Chief executive Simon Clegg said: "I am pleased to confirm that our home game against Barnsley will be the focus of our celebrations of this historic milestone.
"I am particularly delighted that six of the team that played such a pivotal role in one of Ipswich Town's greatest achievements will be with us on the day and I'm sure it will be a very special occasion."
The two other surviving members of the squad, Aled Owen and Reg Pickett, aren’t able to be present.

I thought Jewell said that he made a mistake going for experience and that youth was the way forward...the next thing we hear six of Sir Alf Ramseys squad have been named for the match against Barnsley! :-)
That was a wonderful era and I wish that I could be there to salute the boys again. These players were on a maximum wage of 20 pounds per week (less in the summer) until 1961 and many did not have cars. They would play as many as three games during a holiday weekend (including Easter 1962) without any substitutions and played with a passing and attacking style.. We have so much to thank them for.
31st of March, they said they were revealing the new kits early April..
Please, please, please have 2 new kits celebrating that title winning season!! If we do I will wash Cleggs car (probably cars!) for the whole of next season! He'd be an instant hero!

What a fantastic Idea!!!!!! now that would be a kit to own and espcially as next season is our turn to be promoted... and ill supply the soap...Great call Mr_Evans... COYB
For old times' sake and as a tribute, I hope that the club plays Entry of the Gladiators when the players make their entrance. It gives me goosebumps listening to this again!
We should also remember the other players of that season:
Roy Bailey Bill Baxter John Elsworthy Roy Stephenson Jimmy Leadbetter Ken Malcolm Wilf Hall Dermot Curtis Doug Millward (no league appearances that year).
Hopefully the current team will do them proud with their performance.
It would be great if they had a retro kit from the 1962 season. I would buy one in memory of my dad,Dermot.Still very proud of you Dad. @mocurtis1 Would love to be there on 31st.The reunion 10 years ago before the Man Utd game was fantastic. ITFC is still the first result I look for. Promotion next year.
Good one TractorRoyNo1 Good old Swede. The blue and white umbrella over the tractor featured in my avatar reminds me of George (Swede) Herring, an Ipswich bus conductor, who would parade around the pitch before home games wearing a blue sweater and carrying a blue and white umbrella while leading the cheering including Keep Right on to the end of the Road as well as .. ONE, TWO THREE, FOUR WHO ARE WE FOR? I P S W I C H IPSWICH!
mocurtis1 Good to hear from you. Your Dad always represented Ipswich (and Eire) well and he kept Ray on his toes.
I'll be back over from Finland for that game and will be taking my three children to watch Ipswich play for the very first time. It will be a privilege for all of us to pay respect to six gentleman who are genuinely a part of club folklore.
mocurtis1 Two of the most memorable games for your Dad, Dermot were in 1959 when we were in the old Division 2. We hammered Suderland 6-1 with Dermot scoring the first three with Ted Phillips getting the next three. At the next home game, we beat Stoke 4-0 with your Dad scoring all four goals. After the fourth went in I remember him standing with both arms raised as the crowd roared it's approval
JohhnyJohnson Ha ha, there is a Nobitch supporter who goes to my local. When he gets cocky I have to threaten him with a hisitory lesson!
TWTD pt1 The focus will always, of course, be on the monumental feat of capturing the First Division title, but looking beyond that I would imagine many of those players will have 2 or 3 Championship winning medals from Div2 60/61 and Div 3 (S) Right now I'd settle for a play win promotion - I will be saluting these gents via the internet from @ 5,500 miles away. Champions ALL!
For the record Ted Phillips 4 Championship wins (2 x Div 3(S), Div 2 & Div 1) Larry Carberry 3 (Div3(S), Div 2 & Div1) John Compton, Ray Crawford & Andy Nelson 2 (Div2 & 1) Doug Moran 1 (Div 1)
Whilst I hope no Ipswich team ever have to compete at the 3rd tier (even though it did you know who no harm) it is hard to imagine an Ipswich player winning 1 Championship with us....
Well done TractorRoyNo1. I haven't forgotten but thanks for the memory! Those were the days....plus the Sir Bobby Robson era as well of course. What a heritage and let's hope that we can take inspiration from that!
