Jewell: We Deserved Victory
Jewell: We Deserved Victory
Saturday, 17th Mar 2012 17:57

Town boss Paul Jewell thought his side just about deserved their 3-2 home victory over Peterborough, despite the visitors having had the better of the first half.

Jewell said: “It was an entertaining game with both sides knowing what their strengths are, which is going forward and trying to score more than the opposition.

“I watched the tape of their Blackpool game yesterday and it could have been three-all after 10 minutes there was so much really good attacking play, it was so open.

“Yes, [it was like a basketball match early on] - we attacked, they attacked. I thought in the first half they were the better team, they shaded it.

“Even though we had some really good chances, so did they. But in the second half I thought we were the better team.

“We were hanging on in the final moments there and showed great character to come back from them equalising. We would definitely have lost that not so long ago.”

The Blues boss admits he’s rather too used to high scoring games involving his team: “There aren’t many games where we play out a comfortable 1-0 out here. We know that we need to tighten up defensively all over as a team, we’ve known that all season.

“But what we have got at the moment is goals, we’re creating chances. JET didn’t have a great game today, it wasn’t his day today, and he’s been a major part of our attacking force, but we still got three goals.”

Jewell says he switched his system around to counteract Peterborough’s midfield: “We changed our shape to match them up because they were causing us a few problems.

“JET wasn’t having the best game and so we matched them up in the middle of the park. You can say it worked, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I think it’s important that we scored two goals from set plays because they are vitally important.”

Michael Chopra had a few opportunities but failed to get on the scoresheet but his manager wasn’t too disappointed with his display: “I’d rather he missed them than not have the chance. He’s hit the bar, he’s hit one over the bar, he probably hit that too well.

"He could have scored two headers in the first half, although I know Tommy Rowe could have as well.

“I was just looking at the stats. They had 20 shots and we’ve had 14 or 15, so it must have been good for you guys.

“I think we deserved to win. Darren will have his thoughts on that, but I think what we did show was character.

“We were 1-0 up, they equalised, their first goal was a bit fortunate, then 2-1, then they scored again and then we’ve come back again.

“We had a little bit of fortune with the goal, there’s no doubt about that, but when we played down their place in the 7-1 game at least two of their goals were offside and I didn’t come in moaning and groaning about that.”

Jewell, who joked that Aaron Cresswell’s winner should go down as an own goal, says the left-back is suffering with a slight groin problem and Tommy Smith took a bit of a knock towards the end.

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson thought his team deserved something from the match: “We were certainly unlucky. We just didn’t score when we had control of the game. Before they scored their first we could have had two or three. I’d have to watch it again but I don’t think it was a game we deserved to lose.”

Excuse me! I don't like negativity either but stating that you don't agree with PJ's view that we deserved to win is not being negative. I thought that we were lucky to win and that Peterborough deserved at least a draw and might even have won themselves. That said I was delighted with the win and if it was lucky then good. It's a measure of the ongoing development of this team that they keep going even when they are struggling to contain the opposition as we were undoubtedly doing at times yesterday. All teams need luck and the better teams actually make their luck. Long may we continue to be lucky.

I have not been a supporter of Leadbitter, but I have to put my hands up and say he was the pick of the bunch. At last he is becoming a more attacking midfielder.

Lee Bowyer, made a considerable contribution when he came on. Laying off some great passes and switching the play.

Should start with him on Wednesday.

Was Boyd that good? I know we have been looking at him for ages and the report suggests he was dangerous. Would he be good to bring in once we let Murphy go?

Whenever I've seen him he looks class and thought he should really be a town player.

Wasn't there of course... Washing my hair.

Didnt deserve the 3pts but dug in.Should hav been dead and buried by half time but rallied well in the 2nd and limited them. In Paul Taylor they hav the best player ive seen in the division this season and was genuinely impressed by their play.Under Keane we would hav lost this heavily as wed forgotten how to attack but so open were they that if they didnt score we would. Such a shame we brought Leadbitter back into the side as hes having no input whatsoever, god PJ your a clown!! (for those with limited intelligence im being ironic). JET and Drury were well off form, maybe a game to far for the latter...for now. But overall its still worth doing the 426mile round trip for,Mr Keane had nearly killed my interest .

It was an intense and absorbing game yesterday. We sort of edged it rather than deserved it. They were very sharp up front and in midfield and exposed some of limitations.

About Boyd he is better than any of our midfielders, we should have gone for him last season when we were rumoured to be in for him. Might be too late now.

Cheptsow how right you are..... mentality now is if they score then we will score more! under Keane it was mark tight don't let them score and hopefully we can nick a goal at the end,if they did score we were stuffed as no attack in the team!

chepstow... no input from leadbitter? I am no leadbitter fan, but he is contributing with goals, 2 against the saints, 1 on sat and has been in the eyes of many, motm last two games.
I am not sure if jewell is the man, around xmas time i posted that i was appalled with the direction and lack of progress being shown from the team under Jewell, also commented that we were soon to be in a relegation battle and most of us on here could have achieved that. however the progress shown over the last nine games is something, i and probably not many on here could have achieved. Lets face it we would be managers if we could do it.
We all have our opinions, and will not agree all the time, some of us may never agree on anything. Surely we can agree on this though? Its a results business and an entertainment industry... saturday was both.....and if the results continue the crowds will increase...its a win win scenario.... coyb

Hard fought, underestimation. Tyrone for Posh was unplayable at times.
I feel bad for the central pair not getting enough support from the midfield but they were far to slow to react for both goals, from where I was sitting I couold see both goals unfold well before the final pass happened.
I think we deserved the points with the amount of good chances we made, I do agree with a previous post that if this was 3 months ago we would have lost.

Whats with the negativity? I didnt go to the game, but by all accounts from friends and on the radio that it was an end to end game, with plenty of goalscoring chances and very entertaining! ...And we won! And some are STILL moaning. I think it was probably great value for money. Kind of makes you wonder if we have some Naarwich supporters in disguise! to be fair, premiership or not, i would much rather be at Portman road than Carrow road too.

I don't agree that we were that lucky. We certainly rode our luck in the first half (though still created several good chances) but in the second half Peterborough hardly had a shot while we peppered their goal.

There really are some people on here desperate to be negative wherever possible.

Don't get me wrong, we weren't great and Drury and JET had poor games by their recent standards but I thought wee definitely deserved something from the game and with defences like those on display a win was never out of the question.

How can a man who scores 3 goals in two games not have any input!!!!!
Whilst there may seem a lot of negativity on this forum just remember they represent a VERY small minority of the 17000 or so who regularly support the team.As the saying goes, all the noise comes from the shallow end of the swimming pool !

Dissboy- I'm not a Leadbitter fan either but credit to him when it's due he has been mom last 2 matches but he scored 2 against Hull not The Saints like you said.

Agree a few players had an off day at the same time. Delayney was poor, Drury not as effective as usual (but we can excuse him of one bad game) and things were just not going for JET who i think knew it was not his day and let his head drop. BUT we took 3 points when below par so can't really argue with that! The foundations are in place for next season. Need to strengthen at the back and i think we'll be up there at the end of next season (Mind you i thought that last year!)

Loving those great pictures on the match report.

Let's get behind the team and see just how high we can finish the season. Surely in this form, the top 10 is within our grasp?

Whether we deserved to win or not, football can be a cruel game and I have lost count of the amount of times we have bemoaned our luck in recent times. A win is a win, let's learn from it and move on to the next game. COYB!
