Bowyer Out to Make Amends
Bowyer Out to Make Amends

Lee Bowyer sees tonight’s home clash with Burnley as a perfect opportunity to make amends for Town’s rock-bottom display in the corresponding fixture almost four months ago.

Ipswich slumped to a 4-0 defeat at Turf Moor in November, after which manager Paul Jewell was so angry that he saw fit to question the players’ commitment to the cause.

Bowyer, 35, gave way to teenage substitute Josh Carson at half-time that night and said: “I know how much that defeat hurt the manager and everybody else.

“We have definitely got to go out this time and show a different side to our game because they had it far too easy at their place.

“There are times when things just don’t happen for you as a player but you have to move on. You don’t play perfectly in every game but obviously that was a bad one and it happened to too many people. We will be trying to put that right.”

Bowyer reflected on the season so far — in Town’s case a campaign of two vastly contrasting halves — and added: “I’ve often doubted that old saying that everything evens out in the end. I’ve never really been a firm believer in that but from what I’m witnessing this season it definitely does.

“At the start of the season things seemed to drop for the other side — things like little ricochets dropping for their forwards — but now it seems to be favouring us a bit more.”

Bowyer, like so many of the Town players, has not even given up hope of gatecrashing the top six and contesting the play-offs, despite it appearing to be a rather tall order.

He said: “You never know what could happen. We are on a good run and if we can maintain this form you don’t know where it could take us.

“I don’t think any team is unbeatable in this league. We went to Reading and didn’t deserve to lose that game. They have gone on a nine-game winning streak or something crazy. Why can’t we do that?

“We have beaten West Ham twice and they were meant to be hot favourites. We went to Southampton and got a good point there. We’ve been to Middlesbrough and I thought we were the better team there. They are beatable but we just have to take one game at a time. Hopefully we will get three points from the Burnley game and build on that.”
