On this day 20 years ago John Lyall’s Town secured the 1991/92 Second Division title and promotion to the new-fangled Premier League via a 1-1 draw at Oxford United’s Manor Ground.

What are your memories of that afternoon and of that season in general? Add them to the comments section below.

I lived in London and went with my brother (who was Fulham supporter). Couldn't get in away end and remember Neil Thompson taking a throw-in in front of us. Several people shouted "Come on Thommo!" and he looked round in surprise and said "What are you all doing in there?". And then all the ITFC fans ignoring the pleas of the tannoy to leave the pitch but leaving as soon as John Lyall got hold of the mic and politely told everyone it was time to go home. Happy, happy days. So sad way football has gone since then. Around the same time as this, went with my brother to see Fulham play at Hereford, with a place in the football league at stake. Players who cared, players who weren't on loan, players that stayed more that 2 seasons.... is what I miss

Ozzy Dog & others; I didn't miss a home game that season. Jason, Chris K, Milts, all top players who really cared about the club and the fans..it meant so much to them just playing for Ipswich Town. I miss those days too...totally different to our current crop and yes the Premier league & TV revenue has kinda spoilt football.

Me and some mates had been at Oxford , standing in the Arsenal end when we got relegated so I always thought it was very apt that we secured promotion there. Seem to recall loads of Warky masks being worn too. Great day. Not sure I could scale that fence so quickly now though.

Someone mentioned Bristol Rovers.... was this the season when we played them away on opening day? Marcus Stewart, 3-0, 3-3 etc? I remember that too beacuase I borrowed aforementioned brother's car. It was broken into via the sunroof during the match, along with several other cars. Was a windy drive down the M4 home

My dad still has a souvenier piece of the Manor Road pitch in our back garden! My abiding memory is all the town fans climbing the fence with one steward standing in front of the locked gate in the fence, he took one look at our fans clambering over, shrugged his shoulders and unlocked the gate.

Haddock Street........ Brilliant!!!

Probably my fave season too. The penalty shootout at Chelsea in the ZDS Cup (remember that?), stuffing Pompey 5-2 and the cup ties with Liverpool. Driving to Southend for THAT match and my mate throwing up in the back of the car on the way there, pulling over and somehow trying to clean it all out. Drove the rest of the way there with the windows down to try and get rid of the stink. And when Thommo scored that last minute winner I knew we were going up. Remember the Brighton match on the last day, seeing all the players in Hollywoods that night and the civic reception the next day.

BTW, the opening fixture at Bristol Rovers (where I believe a certain Marcus Stewart was on the scoresheet) was at Twerton Park, home of Bath City. oddly enough I drove past that place on the way to Bristol City on the opening day of this season.

It was an incredibly feel good time. North Stand rocking, the lads in the West, Hare and Hounds, Blackadder, Jase and Kiwomya, players and fans drinking together. It was the most collective unit the club has been. Like someone mentioned earlier, I feel so much more detatched from the club and its staff these days. Maybe its because I'm older, I don't know.

But what a season. The Southend away day was the day I knew we were going up. That run we went on between end of Feb and start of April left everyone else for dead, and we were able to afford the mini hiccup (Grimsby, Bristol C, Sunderland) at the end. Good memories, 20 years ago..good god. Lets hope we can have another season like that very soon.

Remember that this great success followed on from the previous season, when an ageing Town side finished below half way & was widely criticised for having no passion. The manager's abilities were called into question, and whether he was up for the job, despite previous good record in management. A parallel with today? Roll on next season, or am I just wishful thinking...

Have loved reading all the comments above, I know I missed the 70's and 80's Ipswich glory years, but the early and late 90's/2000's when I started going was an epic and great era for the club. I actually have the 1991 season review on video in the loft and feel like getting it out now and burning it to DVD some how (and I still have a VCR up there too) just to relive it a bit! Was also at the Southend game and got crushed at the front against the now banned metal fencing as Thommo scored that goal... didn't stop us screaming like mad in pure joy that only football fans know!

20 years!!!! Missed the first game at Brizzle as we were on holiday but remember that season so well. Games vs Tranmere, Portsmouth, Newcastle, Sarffend and Liverpool were great games. I remember the Bristol City away game and thinking when we lost FFS please don't blow it now and then we drew with Grimsby at home and i was thinking NOOOOOOOOOOOO. Then the trip to Oxford........ what a crap ground. I remember climbing on the gate telling the steward i am going on the pitch and he was going mad at me, then the next thing i know the bast**d has opened the gate and i am 12 foot in the air and every other town fan was on the pitch! Great comments about the players to- Forrest, Thommo, Warkey, Stockwell, Jason and Kiwomya,oh happy days and not forgetting John Lyall.........RIP John.

What an atmosphere in the north stand that season. Where has it gone?
We need it back but we need to be given something to sing about.

Neil 'billy the fish' Thompson got some cracking goals and we songs about all the players.

Bring back the old north when PR had an atmosphere.

Remember it well. Was living in Stratford on Avon at the time, still went to most home games & nearly always away too as had 2 fellow blues from Coventry who shared petrol & driving. It was at a friday night fixture at Tranmere Rovers that i said to one of my travelling companions that we would definately win the league having ridden our luck then Milts scoring with our only real chance of the game. Fast foward to Oxford, couldn,t find a pub anywhere near their cowshed of a ground that would let us before kick off, I think it was Magilton who gave them the lead, then the equaliser from i can,t recall who, squeaky bum time for what seemed like hours, then a huge pitch invasion from all 4 sides of the ground at the final whistle. Had a very good night in Stratford with aforementioned Coventry blues. Oh happy days.

Warkywonderland. Have to say you are spot on. Our away support is much more vocal. The North Stand had a great atmosphere years ago but rarely now do i hear much more than a muffled sound from my seat in Brittania family section. Think the high roof may have something to do with it plus the same old few songs. Section 6 did at least try to get some enthusiasm going, what happened to them?.

I remember on the way up to the game, selling a scarf to a passing dutch car full of fans for a tenner, whilst doing 80mph on the the M40! It was a tricky manoeuvre getting the two cars close enough! Fab memories of that season, Phil Whelan's goals, particularly at Southend & being able to stand at games.

A great day in a great season. I remember just wishing the whole second half away then being on the pitch after the final whistle. I was only a child in 78 and 81 so thought winning things was natural for ITFC! The next 11 years taught me different and this promotion meant so much more as I'd attend all home games and over half the away.
I also remember heading to Blackadder once getting back to Ipswich with "We are the champions" by Queen being played over and over again on the jukebox.
Very happy memories

It was great to get promotion and the title on the same day. Good fa cup run that season, very unlucky to lose at Anfield in the 5th round.

After losing out to Oxford in the battle to stay up in 1986, it was great to go back up at their place.

I was there. What a day. The old Oxford 'stadium' wasn't up to much but I have happy memories of it.

Pitch invasion. Danny Baker playing Thin Lizzy Boys are back in town for us on 606. walking across the concourse at Paddington chanting champions to the amusement of the other passengers there. hearing stories of fighting going on on the road back into Oxford.

Forrest, Yallop, Stockwell, Wark and Milton were Ipswich through and through. It's a shame Dozzell and Kiwomya decided to get greedy and sign for Spurs & Arsenal as soon as they came sniffing! Could have had a few more years with Ipswich in the top flight had they stayed together. I also remember the epic FA Cup struggle with Liverpool that put ITFC back on the map as a decent side. I miss those players, I miss that feeling of being an Ipswich supporter in the 90s. The hope we would make that big return was amazing.
