Town Linked With Move for Birmingham Keeper
Town Linked With Move for Birmingham Keeper

Birmingham keeper Colin Doyle is reported to be close to joining the Blues on a free transfer. Doyle, 26, was previously targeted by Town after Shane Supple’s retirement in 2009 during Roy Keane’s time as manager.

Irish international Doyle, who played for the Midlanders against the Blues at Portman Road earlier in the month, is out of contract at the end of the season and is likely to be looking for regular first team football having been second-choice throughout his time at St Andrew’s.

Winner of one full cap in addition to appearances at U21 and B levels, Cork-born Doyle joined Birmingham at 15 and has since spent time on loan at Chester, Nottingham Forest, Millwall and Coventry.

Since signing a professional deal with Birmingham in 2003, the 6ft 5in tall keeper has made 42 starts and five substitute appearances for his parent club plus 19 starts and one game from the bench for his loan sides.

With Boaz Myhill out with a knee injury, Doyle is likely to feature for Birmingham during the play-offs as his club look to bounce back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Town are likely to be on the look-out for two keepers over the summer with Richard Wright and Cody Cropper having been released, while on-loan Reading glovesman Alex McCarthy, the first-choice for much of the second half of the season, was recalled by Reading in March.

What are you doing, PJ???

How can you consider replacing an untried 19 year old who's been crocked for most of this season, and a 34 year old career bench-warmer with a 6'5" 26 year old who's been playing in the Championship (including a good game against us) this season?

We recently had a 6' 5" man between the sticks named Flapper Fulop lets hope IF we get Doyle he turns out to better than Flapper!

Was hoping we'd finally make a move for loach. However, if we don't he doesn't look like a bad signing.

The important thing is to sign a permanent keeper (not more loans) who will be at the club and (form/injuries permitting) playing as No. 1 for the next two or three seasons. Whether this guy is a) good enough b) a target remains to be seen.

I think the majority agree that PJ was wrong not to address this last Summer. Many will rightly be disappointed that Cropper was released, but for me it was correct to released Richard Wright. Clearly we will sign a new keeper; but who and whether he is any good - time will tell!

Jewell shouldnt have been in the situation of having to find a goalkeeper seeing as his predeccessor signed 3 keepers all clearly not good enough and costing us a lot of money .

Iv seen Doyle play a good few times and I have been impressed with him. Definitely has the ability to be No 1 here.
He is at the right age to come into the team and is coming in to his best years.

If we sign him for free, it would be a marvelous signing.

He's too young. What about Peter Shilton?

In 9 years he's only made 42 starts and 5 sub appearances in my view doesn't make him look that good on paper and I'd rather have a keeper with more first team experience to his name, having said that 2 other keepers we're being linked with in Kuszczak and Guazn aren't exactly first team regulars either.
Whatever happens, we need 2 new keepers anyway and I certainly hope that whoever we sign are signed and contracted to the club rather than brought in as loans, I don't want to see another loanee as our number 1 keeper and whilst it wouldn't bother me too much if we signed a keeper as back up/number2 on loan that would be unlikely to happen as the whole point of loaning a keeper out is to get him game time elsewhere.

That was my view, buryblue77, but because he's played one of those against us recently, he must be great. He's played four league games all season, it's just chance two of those have been against us.

If he's such a good prospect, why did Birmingham decide to loan Boaz Myhill for the season, rather than have Doyle as their number one this season. If he's such a good prospect, someone would have chosen him as fist choice by now.

"Campag - 26 is no age for a keeper"

It is for one who's only averaged nine league games a season.

"Kelvin Davis was about 26/27 when he joined us and was certainly what you'd call a number one (and the last really good keeper we had)."

More importantly, Davis had about 250 games under his belt when we signed him. Davis had played more league games in the season before we signed him, that Doyle has played in the last nine years. Being a sub keeper, and playing when the number one is injured, is a lot different to being a number one keeper.

A back up keeper generally won't be the one that organises his defence - he has to defer that to one of the defenders, because the back four will have a tried and tested routine, and they won't want to disrupt that for the sake of a game or three. Being a number one goalkeeper means you have a much bigger responsibility, and you have to win the trust of the defenders. This guy is halfway through his career (keepers rarely go on past their late thirties these days, although some idiot will point to David James and claim this completely devalues the point, even though he's one of the few exceptions to the rule), and no-one's considered him capable of being a number one.

Like I say, I hope there's nothing in this, because he's a career number two.
