TWTD understands that Tottenham youngster Massimo Luongo is amongst the players manager Paul Jewell is hoping to bring to Portman Road ahead of the start of the new season. The 19-year-old Australian midfielder is available on a season-long loan.

Sydney-born Luongo joined Spurs in January 2011 after impressing while on trial, having previously played for APIA Leichhardt Tigers in his homeland.

He made nine appearances for their U18s in the 2010/11 season, scoring three goals from central midfield, including one in a final day 2-1 defeat of the Blues.

By the beginning of last season he had impressed enough to make his senior debut — and miss the decisive spotkick in a shoot-out — as a 71st minute sub in a Carling Cup tie with Stoke. That remains his only first team appearance.

Capped twice by Australia at U20 level and called into senior training camps, 5ft 9½in tall Luongo also qualifies to play for Italy, the nation of his father's birth, and Indonesia, where his mother was born.

Speaking last Thursday, manager Paul Jewell said that even before academy director Bryan Klug returned to Playford Road from Spurs last month, he already had good connections at White Hart Lane.

Jewell was yet to speak to Klug about potential targets who have come through the Tottenham academy, but was well aware of their youth players and has regularly spoken to the Premier League club: “I haven’t spoken to him about that yet.

“We have a decent relationship with Spurs, I know [assistant first-team coach] Tim Sherwood quite well at Tottenham and I’ve been in dialogue with him over the summer.

“I’m actually seeing [former Spurs manager] Harry Redknapp tomorrow [last Friday], so he might be telling me about one or two good players. I have seen quite a bit of Spurs’ academy players.”

I really can't see the point of this loan, especially at his age if there is any truth in the link. We need to learn from the previous seasons regarding loans.

Do you remember when loans were for players who got injured, unless it was someone we could maybe sign at the end of the loan I don't see the point with this one.

Tend to agree with Warkys_tash - not keen on loans unless really necessary, and not a high priority area for me, we have Drury, Hyam, Stevenson and Bullard and possibly even Martin. If i were going to get in a central midfielder i would prefer someone more experienced.

Sounds like a good player, would be a good signing as long as we don't get too many loanee's in; one or two hungry young players would be enough in the loan department. Would love to see Gio back at the club but I think he's had a lot of interest from abroad; it would be a long shot getting him back but maybe worth a go P.J? COYB!

Reckon we should pass on this one. Someone with a bit of experience or lets give our own kids experience.

Would personally like to see us build a team for the future. First two signings of the Summer tick the boxes (although Hewitt a long way from fitness). I am not for loans at all - however, most Championship clubs now have to rely on one or two. The key is to get season long loans (like this one) with NO recall clause. At least it assists consistency for the season. I don;t see any benefit of these month / three month loans - as the players ultimately leave and are then sorely missed (e.g. Andrews).

Could be a smokescreen, makes no sense to talk about loans at this stage of the window otherwise.

Dog. I think Sindre was being a bit tongue in cheek. However the FM series has an incredible scouting network and research team. They get a lot of stuff spot on. Saying that I would love any loans we get to have proven quality, but how would we get that. We won't. So trust in klug I guess.

Carlos did OK as captain. Remember what happened to McCauley when he had the armband? He was pants. Let's let the new boy play free of the responsibility.

Would rather see permanent signing, hasn't worked in the past, would love to see us sign George Boyd form Peterbrough in the last year of his contract, very creative. Or another young player lower League. Time we moved on from Loan Market and build a team.
