Davies Could Stay at Derby Until January
Davies Could Stay at Derby Until January
Friday, 3rd Aug 2012 09:11

Derby boss Nigel Clough says Town target Steve Davies could remain at Pride Park until January with no one yet having made an acceptable offer for the striker. The Blues have been after the former Tranmere man all summer but with boss Paul Jewell saying that the Rams asking price, believed to be £1 million, is beyond the club’s means at present.

Clough says that Davies, who has a year left on his contract but wants to move to a club in the south for family reasons, may be given a run-out in a friendly this week.

So far the striker has been left out to avoid him picking up an injury and he’s not joined the squad for a training camp, which coincidentally is being held in Suffolk ahead of a friendly at Colchester tonight.

The Rams boss said: “Nobody has really met our valuation. There will come a point where we will have to draw a line under it and he will be involved with us until at least January, but we haven't reached that point yet.

"If nothing has happened by early next week, we could see him play at Belper on Tuesday.

"We have to recognise the fact he might well be here until January, so we have to start getting him some games with a view to him being involved.”

Yesterday, Bristol City boss Derek McInnes ruled his club out of the running for the 24-year-old frontman.

If they don't want to let him go on the cheap and we don't want to pay over the odds then can't we just move on?

Our season finished back in april..surely we had other targets and weren't planning on spending 4 months negotiating this deal?

Time is running out til the season starts - let's move on!!!

I like the fact that we no longer let clubs and players hold us to ransom just cause Marcus Evans has a bob or two. Last thing we want is to end up like Portsmouth.

If he wants to move nearer the South so much let's pay the transfer fee asked (or atleast a more realistic offer) and then pay him less per month/year to claw some of the initial outlay back... Just an idea!

who cares jewell will be out of a job by then. Unless we sign some defenders who can defend. owe i forgot it takes us weeks and weeks to sign any one . Heavy loss on opening game against blackburn . All ready dreading the season remind me again why did i renew my season ticket. Why do we take longer than any body else to sign players surelly it cant be just clegg. or is it the fact we have a dinosaur for a manager who is out of date with the game in ideas formation ect

Lightningboy - Not sure who you are telling to move on?

Its speculation, we have no idea what else is going on behind the scenes and what other targets we have.

For all we know PJ mayve moved on 2 weeks ago.

Its just rubbish from Derby, trying to act like they dont care. Reverse psychology.

Call their bluff and stick to our guns. They dont want to loose out on a decent fee this summer, he would be valued at less to nothing come Jan, plus he runs the risk of injury in the mean time.

I said I thought this would be the case on the Davies thread yesterday, cant say I am surprised. We really dont have any money to spend-its a sad, sad state of affairs for this great club, time to sell up Mr Evans and hand the reigns over to someone who is going to take this club forward.

this is good, he's just on the big haggle, we'll get him if we want him for 750k or below

We have a history of this - putting all our eggs in one basket and then missing out on looking at and / or buying others... Remember the Jeffers situation? How long did we court Norris - that worked well. Devann Yao anyone? If Derby don't want this boy, then why should we?

We need a striker (so we have been told) between now and two weeks time, not in January. We are competing with a lot of clubs all of whom have brought players in.... P1ss or get off the pot Messrs. Clegg, Jewell and Evans.

derby have said this to remind clubs he is available and to start a bidding war, if no added interest comes in the next few days they will accept our offer or make a counter offer to us.

Seems like the Bristol City "interest" was put out there to force our hand...

Make Derby a final "take-it-or-leave-it" offer of £500k; if they don't want to sell, get Daryl Murphy on loan for the season, and offer a contract to Davies in January to join us on a free next summer.

Derby are not getting worried in the slightest. If he does not go before the season starts then no problems. He is a good player who I rate very much and is worth more than Jewell/Club wants to pay.He would be a snip for a player his age at £750,000/£1million He will score goals where ever he goes I just wish Steve would stay here at Derby.

Shows a lack of ambition to me what have we spent 300000 350000 and we can't go that high and we want promotion on under a mill

I think we are (for once) more in the driving seat than the selling club. Let's have "ice in the stomach" as we say in Sweden, i.e. stay cool and call their bluff. Davies will obviously be worth less in January than he is now. "Bristol are interested," "We might keep him until January": sounds as if Derby are getting a little desperate. We are right to bring a little bit of reality back into the transfer carousel.
