Hutchings: Davies Not Our Only Interest
Monday, 20th Aug 2012 12:46

Assistant boss Chris Hutchings says the Blues have targets other than Derby striker Steve Davies, who has completed his move to Bristol City, the clubs having agreed a fee now reported to be £750,000 over the weekend.

Hutchings, who took on today's pre-match press duties, said: “We’re after quite a few players and we’ve be linked with several, as you all know. We’d just like to keep our business in-house.

“If he signs for Bristol City we wish him all the very best. We had him at Derby, we knew what he was like, but we have other interests.

“A lot goes into [a deal] - bids being accepted, players wanting to come to you first and foremost, moving the family down, schooling for kids etc. There’s a lot that goes into it and as soon as we have any real information to tell you we will.”

Meanwhile, winger Plaisir Bahamboula, who spent part of pre-season on trial with the Blues, has joined French club Viry Chatillon.

silly if some of you choose to get your 'hopes up' prior to a possible transfer.. more fool you... SD's family are a lot closer to Bristol, and that matters at the moment

I think the disappointing aspect about the Davies saga was that he went to Bristol City. After all Derby's stance initially was that they had agreed reluctantly to transfer list the player because of a genuine family situation. Given this position we should have been serious contenders for his signature. As recently as last Friday PJ was extremely confident that a new player acquisition (thought to be Davies) was imminent. By Saturday evening he was telling us the deal was dead and that the offer had been rejected. By Monday morning the player had signed for Bristol City.

This transfer saga was ongoing for weeks so the opportunity to conclude a deal swiftly was there if there was a will by all parties. In the event none of the parties have come out of this with any credit if the various reports along the way are to be believed:

1. The player reportedly wanted to be closer to his family in London. Really?
2. BCFC denied any interest in the player. DCFC clearly played off interest from Ipswich and Bristol against each other without any obvious consideration of the wishes of the player, while
3. ITFC do not appear to have shown anybody involved that they seriously wanted this player.

Of course this reading of the situation may well be flawed and there may well be other factors and explanations as to why we failed to get our man and if so I apologise, but the fact remains that he has ended up at a club many are tipping to struggle this year. That we cannot close a deal like this one does not bode well in securing other transfer targets.

We could be after a 1,000 targets, I can't see us getting any of them, how Marcus evens ever made his millions if he runs his other business like this is beyond me.

For the umpteenth time, I ask how the can Bristol City afford him and we can't?

OK, maybe the Town didn't really rate him that highly which is fair enough they did the right thing, but if so why waste so much time trying to get him for next to nothing? Time that should have been spent on pursuing someone who wanted to come here, we could afford and we rated!

Like billlm I ma now seriously questioning just how much football ambition the likes of Evans and Clegg really have?

None of us know the full story but my guess is this is another case of the fact that ME/SC are not football men coming back to haunt us, treating these deals like they do in the business world, when football is a different animal. There should have been a conclusion to this weeks ago but, by PJ 's own admission we bid again last Thursday so were obviously still after Davies yet Brizzle get it sorted very quickly. If we are, as seems increasingly likely, only able to spend a very limited amount on wages/fees, we need to perhaps change our targets to more realistic ones(ie not the likes of Edu , Heskey etc). We have wasted most of the transfer window chasing this guy for nothing, I fear it will be a case of panic loanees next Friday.
Please ITFC prove me wrong!!
