McCoist Confirms Town's Edu Move
Monday, 20th Aug 2012 13:27

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has confirmed that the Blues have made an offer to US international midfielder Maurice Edu, but says the 26-year-old is yet to accept it.

McCoist said: "As far as I know, there has been an offer on the table from Ipswich which, as yet, he hasn't accepted.

"He trained this morning. I'm just hopeful something can be resolved sooner rather than later."

Edu, who said last week he was aware that Town were interested but that he knew nothing beyond that, has told the Glasgow side that he intends to move on.

Whether Rangers are entitled to a fee for the former Toronto FC man is not yet clear with contradictory reports circulating.

I read all the comments that if it was only 600k it is a sad state of affairs at PR....copuple of things to bear in mind, 1, Believe the price was 750k, and 2. That is what Derby agreed to with Bristol City they may have not wanted to sell him to us and been commanding more or calling our bluff on the negotiations, we don't know how much we offered or why Derby rejected. we are only assuming we did not offer enough.

Just hope this signing happens. Must forget about Davies now he's a BC player. Baffles me slightly why he would choose them over us though.

Reports say Bothroyd could go to Sheffeild Wednesday, thats ridiculous if thats the case he is the kind of striker we need with all his attributes plus no way a newly promoted side should attract someone like him over us. Just make sure PJ that this is the other striker you've been looking at other than Davies!! Tall, Pacy, Good Championship scoring record, Played with Chopra before, all reasons to get this guy!

I'm sure that I can remember Phil quoting Edu's wages in a previous report and that they were less than Bullard so potentially a straight swap. I've not followed his career but doesn't he play in the same role as Martin (just off main striker) ? I never wanted Davies so not going to lose any sleep on that as the last thing a small squad needs is the luxury of an injury prone player. Most people on here seemed very keen on him and I guess we'll all get the chance to see how he does at Bristol and we'll know who was right.

Red Dust...why wouldnt he go to Wednesday? Potentially a bigger club and if they perform as Norwich and Southampton have done after coming back up from League one its fair enough!...but yes he would be a player I would sign defo!

Andyuk, we obviously didnt offer enough as Derby accpeted Bristols bid after a week of negotiations whilst, what seems like years of negotiation with Ipswich, we got nowhere near.

Saying that, the guys not Lionel Messi so lets not get too upset although if we have no plan b and are relying on the loan market then we can forget about the palyoffs as loans arent the answer.

When will the penny drop with the club that if a player gets a better wage offer from another club he wont sign for itfc.

Are Bristol worrying about ffp?? In fact is any other club? I can tell you the perfect solution to sorting ffp, getting promoted and haved £80m in ya back pocket over 4/5 years!

Does this club actually want to get promoted? or stay mid table every season! we have to spend money we are turning in to a club that just rely on loanes and freebies all the rejects nobody else wants i know we can get a few bargains from the lower leagues but we still have to send some money we are such a tight club ins unbeleivable stop stringing out deals and get them done offer edu what he wants we got rid of bullard so that should cover that and get in a big striker and we might be getting somewere

For me If we were lucky enough to get Edu , i could see Lee Martin leaving. Unfortunatly his origional contract was to high , this means any new contact would be less than he is on at the momment. Not a great incentive to sign! You cant blame him for wanting to see out his contract and then deciding his future ( we have seen it before)On the other hand Ipswich could sell him (not for much due to contract). I would see it as unfortuate but a good deal if we could get Edu on a 3 year contract with similar wages/cost as Lee. This would leave any money we still have to back up other areas of the team which i feel are more important.

@Nitroblue1970
I think that the southampton and norwich scenarios of getting promoted twice are very rare it just so happens it occured very close to each other, I dont think it will happen again for a while! alot of people to seem to follow trends of opinion rather than look at a broader picture. When I meet Boythroyd he seemed graciious enough and also someone that does'nt seem as though he likes to be too far away from London.. thus, step in Ipswich!

We can't keep going on about Davies - he's at Bristol City and we can't do anything about that. Can't get to carried away about Edu at the moment either: he may not accept the bid and if he does (which I hope happens) we know from past experiences that it doesn't mean they are 100% definitely signing.

I really hope he does sign; he seems like a class player.

not a hope in hell of Edu signing for us I'm afraid(although I will be happy to eat humble pie if it happens) he appears to be waiting for somebody or anybody else to jump in and get into a bartering match to up his wages, can't blame him, also its a sad day when we can't compete financially with Bristol City, this makes it virtually impossible for us to sign players of any real quality in the open market

I think this is almost a case of with must sign EDU!! How many players have we been linked with and actually signed? I'm not suggesting we have to sign every player we get linked with but if we would have had 2 more additions to the squad I think most town fans would say thats a good job well done. Watching MOTD Last night I was shocked how little Adkins of Southampton spent which I think was 3 million since league 1. That's the sign of a great manager, spot talent and make them better players, similar to what Burley done.

The bid was made to the player not Rangers. Read the article.

And why would the wages be the issue. It is a myth that the wages of Celtic and Rangers players are on a par with top Premier clubs. I bet there are not many players at either club whose wages are any better then the top earner at PR!

Rangers fan at work said "theres no way that edu will sign for Ipswich, he is considering a move to a club with european aspirations and that we would prefer to sign for a premier league club" i hope my work colleague is wrong but i would admit his wage demands would be too high.

I am not going to waste anymore emotional energy in getting excited about players we will have no chance in hell of getting! The lad played Champions league football not that long ago as if he wants mid table Championship football.

Of course I hope we get the lad but if we cant sign a lad thats played 44 games in 4 years and we get beaten by the mighty Bristol City, then I aint holding out much hope on this one either! Looks like we will be going into the season with just 2 recognised strikers with no doubt a couple of loanees who will disappoint no doubt.

Disapointing as pj/clegg have had all summer to get this sorted or at least have a plan b/c/d/e etc
