Jewell: A Rude Awakening
Saturday, 25th Aug 2012 18:11

Blues boss Paul Jewell says his side’s 6-0 defeat at Blackpool was a rude awakening after their good start to the Championship season. The Town manager didn’t think anyone could have foreseen the eventual result during the first half.

Jewell said: “I don’t think that in the first 44 minutes you could see that coming. I thought we had as much of the ball as them. But we didn’t do an awful lot with it and we gifted them goals.

“The second goal came at a crucial time, right on half-time, and it meant it was going to be an uphill task in the second half. But once the third goal went in, we capitulated, I have to say.

“I think it’s a rude awakening,” he added. “I think the spirit in the squad is good, there’s no doubt about that, but that’s a test what happens out there.

“We played exceptionally well on Tuesday, battled away against Blackburn and in a week we’ve gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. That’s been our Achilles’ heel for a long time. On our day we’re good but when we’re not on our day...

“I wouldn’t say that it was one-way traffic in the first half today, we were definitely in the game but we didn’t do enough in their box and when it came in our box we just gave silly goals away.”

The Blues boss thought his side were particularly susceptible on the break: “They counter-attacked us all the time. It wasn’t as if they had bouts of pressure and were banging on the door and banging on the door.

“The sixth goal was a classic. We’re 5-0 down a we’ve got four players out the game with a minute to go. We lose it and they’re back at us.

“Counter-attacking’s hurt us badly today and when we’ve had the ball in situations, we haven’t done enough with it, and when the ball’s been turned over we’ve been exposed.”

Jewell had praise for the opposition: “They’re a good team. You can’t give teams like this goals like we did and expect to win matches.

“They’ve got a lot of flair players in their team, who work exceptionally hard and they’re a good team. But to lose 6-0 feels horrible.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway thought the result flattered his side: “This time of year you get the odd freak result, and I think that was one, to be perfectly blunt.

“I think to go in at half-time the reflection of the game was wrong. I didn’t think we deserved to have a two-goal lead. Our goalie made a brilliant save.

“I thought they got out too easy, I thought they passed it, they looked dangerous and it flattered us at half-time, to be perfectly honest.

“I went mad at half-time, I didn’t think we understood how to win the ball back, they had too much time on it. They caused my back four too many problems because the midfield didn’t get it right.

“In the second half I was delighted. I thought we were much better. And we needed to be. Goals change games, that’s what I keep talking about, and so far we’ve managed to get them a the right times, at vital times, in the early games.”

Langdonblue, yes agreed we have a good points tally considering who we've played. We could so easily be sitting bottom on nothing. However I think the squad is closer this year and they all seem to want to win, I think the players will want to go out and prove that it was just a (huge) blip.

As Alex Mathis said on BBC Suffolk often when JET plays it is like playing with ten men. He may do something brilliant once in a while but 5 games out of 6 he is a luxury we can't afford. I'd love him to prove he can contribute regularly but we are fooling ourselves believing he should start before someone like carson.

I wish some posters would stop banging on about Tommy Smith not being good enough, look at how many MOM's he won second half of last season, he is good enough but I think his concentration/confidence tends to go and don't forget he has also had very little rest in the off-season.
As per signings I feel we need another 2 players not another whole host of last minute signings as this will only serve to give PJ problems the same as last season and not know what his starting 11 is and who plays well with who. Defo a striker back up for Chopra/Scotland and possible a flare left midfielder and that is it if nobody else leaves, we have the nucleus of a fairly solid team but there IS a tendency for heads to drop when the chips are down which needs to be addressed.
On the Keane issue I'm not sure he's ruined the club as much (as regards to whats happening on the pitch now) as some are making out, still got Delaney, Edwards, Scotland and Martin which were all of his signings, ok some of the chaff has been removed and Mr Klug back in place but you can't really use that as an excuse currently, PJ has almost made some equally bad blunders in the transfer market.
Big few months for PJ coming up, but will the board see it that way as they might see his contract out?

No problem guys this is how it's going to be. What do we expect with no serious money, well outside funding loan payments, I don't have a problem with Mr Jewel he can't make a silks purse out of a sows ear no matter his experience.
Our financial model is flawed to progress us.
Sad days now and ahead !!

I turned on the radio and the opening words were "a dreadful mistake by...." and somehow I knew it would be Smith. Sorry he is not mobile or defensively aware and needs to go. Having said that I don't believe there will be a long queue at the gates to PR to buy him.

Bad day and highlights why we bought a blocker in Ndaw and need another centre half. Next few transfer days will make or break the season unfortunately.

Realistically can't see us going down but can't see a foray at the top either.

This result is not the test, the test for Ipswich is how they, the managers and the players react to this result.I do believe that after shipping 7 against Peterborough we then conceded 5 against Southampton and the budgies so lets see what happens next before calling for anybodies head. We could all very well win our next 10 matches and then even garv and co will have to admit defeat and bak the team or we could lose the next 2 matches and need a new manager but we don't know until it happens so as cliche as it might sound, one result does not make a season. Despite today with the right bussiness done today we will be at least top 10 come the end of the season. COYB

...... and in the process we lose goals!!!! Sorry Timmy it's a game of concentration and much as I love to see Youth progress he reached his level with Colchester. If he was good we would be knocking back offers for him.

@andygizmo - so why did he do so well in the World Cup alongside Ryan Nelson and win so many MOM's last season if Colchester is his level? he is a solid player but what I'm saying he does have the odd match where he switches off, why so good for so long last season then? maybe you have to be looking at some of the central midfielders in front of him too, weren't a lot of the goals today scored on the break? Actually probably a good time to give him a rest and maybe even try N'Daw alongside Chambers (Carlisle, Huddersfield). Wouldn't hurt.

A few people have said how bad the defence is but it's a reasonably good defence in my opinion. The reason why I think we go and concede goals like we have today is because of how we play. we have two attack minded players in Emmanuel-Thomas and Martin and a poacher in Chopra, then we have two young players in the middle with Hyam and Luongo, talented but inexperienced. Why has Ince bagged two and has 3 assists because the way we play leaves gaps all over the pitch because of the attack minded players and how we use them, so there will always be space for pacey wingers to exploit. As well as this our two centre halfs aren't the quickest and which means their is also more space in between midfield and defence which means opposing wingers can get good supply and our full backs are best when they push on, so with our set up we can so easily become disorganised.

Players must take the blame for the capitulation of that there is no doubt.

PJ must take the blame for team, squad and set up.

I have said it before, at the moment JET is a luxury in a team that is good but not brilliant. In this Div, with it being so tight you need ever player for 90+ minutes every game. JET has contributed about 5mins so far and that is being generous. Play 442 and to our strengths.

Our CD is not good enough. Tommy Smith is to slow and is Wayne Brown in disguise.

This is a reality check and it will be an interesting few days in the transfer market. If PJ is not backed then his days are numbered. Time for Evans and Clegg to back their man

Hopefully this was just a freak result and does not hearld a bad run last season. If it does than we need to take action very early on. But lets not panic just yet!

Well, I think we can all agree that it was a poor result today. It's my inexpert opinion that our system is wholly unsuited to Chopra, which is why he tends to be unable to influence games. Coupled with the hot-and-cold displays of JET, and we can find ourselves on the back foot, with a figurative 9 men on the pitch. This is easily fixed, however. A taller, more athletic striker is a must, as either the focal point of a 4-2-3-1 away from home, or as support for Chopra in a 4-4-2. A winger is also a priority. JET knows he doesn't need to turn up to games, as we have precious else to choose from. Competition and quality will help both him and us.

As to Mr Smith, I concur with elements of both sides of the argument. I feel that he hasn't got the best positional sense, leading him to misjudge long balls. He goes underneath them, let's them bounce, and hasn't got the pace to recover. However, when he gets it right he can be imperious in the air, and cool and composed in the tackle. His leadership qualities should also be noted, but these only show when he's feeling confident. These flaws are acceptable at Championship level, and more often than not, so long as he's feeling good, he'll perform admirably. Plus he's still young and learning.

Edwards is another player who some criticise. He frustrates me. He's great going forward, but he gets caught out positionally, although he is improving. With JET in front of him, he has no cover when things go wrong, or when he's targeted.

For me, we need another 4 players. A natural right-back should be sought, allowing Edwards to be used in a more natural role and add depth. A winger, as stated, would be high on the list, too. A striker, again, as I've described. Finally, a central defender, as cover and competition, not because of Smith, Delaney, or Chamber's faults, but to add depth.

We must remember that this is one game, worth 3 points. The next game isn't far away and it's a chance to put things right and kick on. Hopefully by Friday we'll have beaten Carlisle and secured our targets in the market. A good season could still lie ahead.

COYB.

Its true freak results do happen early season, ask any Arsenal fans, not even town has conceded 8 but they turned their season around after a poor start. We haven't started badly, at least in comparison to seasons not to long ago. The important thing now, that will show if we've learn't from and moved forward from similar results is the reaction to the next game or two. What I don't want to see is another Peterborough performance following the Southampton game. Carlisle and more importantly Huddersfield matches could provide a lot of pointers to whether the club and players have moved forward.
I'm not panicking I just want to see improvement and lessons learn't. Surely not to much to ask is it???

Good heavens. Since PJ took over ITFC,is there any team that has lost as many games as we have by more than 3 goals? I agree with SickParrot. There's no way that you can excuse a 6 goal defeat at this level. Its not as if we're playing Barca away. It's my birthday next Saturday. Will be there with the missus and its her first trip to FPR. Hope for much better things and ideally, a couple more signings - one up front and one at the back.

I think If we would of lost against Blackburn, and only got a point against Watford I would be very concerned with this sort of defeat to Blackpool. It's the manner of losing 6-0 that is the problem. If we would of lost 2 nil or 3 nil you would move on swiftly. I think all the players need to see a video play back of the match and be pushed on the training ground even harder. This week will be a good test of charactor for Town. If I'm being honest im expecting nothing less than 2 victories. Huddersfield will be a good test but the same mistakes, problems from last season continuing into this season will not be accepted nor will thrashings every now and again from oppostion. Keep calm drink plenty and let's go again on Tuesday.

BuckieBlue added 22:28 - Aug 25
This result could badly knock confidence but positives are that they are all away in NW together until Tuesday's game so hopefully that will allow time to regroup and Tuesday is an opportunity to get back on track. Also next Saturday is surely very winnable and if so we'll be somewhere up there, with a fairly decent points total.
RE comments on here about Tommy Smith. After those World Cup games on the side of the world, then the Olympics he must be knackered, mentally if not physically, so let's hope we someone else in this week and allow him a break to get recharged.

it's all calm here... apparantly it's just a 'Rude awakening' Similar awakening we had on a few occasions last season... as Timmy mentioned on a previous post, a team that loses 6 nil does not have bright ambitions to get out of this league in the upwards direction....Mr Jewell needs to act sharpish as to quote Steve Claridge 'he's had his feet under the table long enough'
