Deal for Duo Could Be Revived
Thursday, 30th Aug 2012 12:24

Town’s contract offers to Posh pair Paul Taylor and George Boyd were a long way from the terms they were after, according to reports in Peterborough. The duo were at Portman Road for talks, the traditional tour of the facilities and to pass medicals yesterday, but late in the evening informed the club via the agent they share that they would not be accepting their deals.

We understand that the move could still be revived before Friday's deadline but it would appear that the Blues would have to offer significantly improved terms in order to land the players.

Posh are keen for the duo to move on for the fee believed to be somewhere in the region of £1.75 million to £2 million before the transfer window closes with other clubs also believed to be interested, Brighton having been linked.

Town boss Paul Jewell, whose usual Thursday press conference was moved to Friday yesterday afternoon, is continuing his search for new signings, including alternatives to Boyd and Taylor, as he looks to add several players to his squad before Friday’s deadline.

Regardless of the failure to secure the Peterborough pair, midfielder Ryan Stevenson will complete his Blues exit prior to the transfer window closing.

The 28-year-old’s contract is set to be terminated in order to ease a switch back to a Scottish club — he was in talks with Motherwell yesterday but other sides are also interested — with his wife believed not to have settled in Suffolk since the midfielder’s £50,000 move from Hearts in January. Stevenson is also keen to play more regularly than he has at Town.

I am sick to death of hearing so called intelligent people keep banging on about how a footballers career is so short and they should get all they can.

If the average player at PR is on 10k a week or 40k a month and they cannot put things in place for their future then they deserve to finish up on the dole with nothing.

No one forces them to spend all their 'hard earned' money in the bookies, they have a choice - just like the rest of us.

Players nowadays just dont understand that the days of ordinary players getting above average wages has gone. Clubs are having to start balancing their books.

As far as I am concerned Ipswich are going about it the right way and not pay over the odds for ordinary players.

I am only stating the bleedin' obvious and I'm sure evans/clegg/jewell don't need to be told that football is like any other business where talent and skill levels determine how much you are paid. the championship is no different to the premiership in this respect, just that the wage level is obviously much lower. a system where fixed pay scales operate might be fine for the accountants but is just too inflexible. think about it, if all the team were paid exactly the same we would soon be shouting that its preposterous that the donkey of a striker is getting the same as that hard-working gut-busting CH. different players of different abilities will always have different wages. thats why there is such secrecy surrounding the subject in many walks of life. if town want a certain player badly enough they will have to settle for the best deal they can negotiate. there is little evidence that a "going rate" exists for anyone. £35M carroll compared to £8M rhodes for example... ( with similar discrepancy in wages too ). of course when money is no object as it appears to have been at liverpool, its dead easy to spend ridiculous amounts on buying and paying players. town apparently don't have that sort of money to throw around even though the owner is reputed to be a millionaire which brings us to the ambition aspect. despite claims by clegg that the 5 year plan was/is to get into the premiership it cannot possibly happen if our finances are as constrained as we are led to believe. yes it is still a mystery how a club like swansea made it to the top and we cannot.
