Upson in Stoke's 25-Man Squad
Wednesday, 5th Sep 2012 16:57

Town target Matthew Upson has been named in Stoke’s 25-man Premier League squad for the first half of the season.

As reported yesterday, the former England international is one of the central defenders Paul Jewell is hoping to bring to Portman Road on loan.

His inclusion in the 25 would appear to suggest that the Potters are not currently inclined to let the 33-year-old move out on a longer term basis, although a shorter loan spell with the inclusion of a recall clause may appeal from Stoke's perspective to keep the Eye-born centre-half match fit. Jewell, however, may choose to look elsewhere if that is the case as he is looking for players who he ultimately wants to sign on a permanently.

Upson's first team opportunities at the Britannia Stadium would seem likely to be limited with a number of central defenders ahead of him in the pecking order.

One player who has been left out of the Potters’ squad is previous Blues target Danny Higginbotham, who could also be in the thoughts of Jewell and other Championship managers.

Jewell confirmed that he tried to sign the 33-year-old former Sunderland man on loan in January prior to him joining Nottingham Forest on a similar spell.

Meanwhile, we understand QPR's Clint Hill is also amongst the players on Jewell's list of potential loanees, however, the former Tranmere, Stoke and Crystal Palace man probably won't be available with the West Londoners' central defensive options currently lacking depth. The 33-year-old has been named in the 25 at Loftus Road.

Elsewhere, former Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot, who was linked with the Blues last week, has completed a switch to Blackpool.

Ipswich26 how in any way is that comment productive although understand your frustration and I agree that PJ & co should have got this sorted out alot sooner than they have done.

We have to move on from this one keep looking and bring in who we can, anyone that can help our back four at the moment would be great.

when does Jewell expect to get someone? Is he happy to keep with what we've got?

if the window opens next week, we'll take a least another week to sign someone and then he probably won't be match fit. So we're probably looking at a month til we get reinforcements.

Doesn't thaat mean we'll be flying by the seat of our pants and could easily lose out on a top six position if we are unlucky to get an injury. Not a very professional approach from the great man, Jewellio.

peguinsrus thought you should know Wickam has been offered bto Ipswich and the wonderful, brilliant god like prat said he didnt want him he would rather waste 1.5m on a forward we dont want and just to think we could have had Billy Clark on loan too.
He is just unbelievable JEWELL OUT

Righty, you have excelled yourself with that load of rubbish, even by your standards.

Taylor is a quality player which you would know if you actually watched us as opposed to posting squit on here every 5 minutes.

I would have been disappointed if you hadn't responded like that Righty. You are nothing if not predictable.

I just want to know how you know so much about who was offered to us and who we turned down? Are you a club insider?

that is very annoying upson would have been good for us maybe jewell should look for cback in league one or two not sure premiership loans are generally a good idea hungrier lower league players will suit us better . am pro jewell but centre back debicle is def a big rick that our season worryingly hangs on

Oh righty and walberswick, you are splitting my sides, seriously. Remind me to set up another identity on here, so I can talk to myself and my other "friends" too.........

Anyway, back on topic, I am looking forward to one or two good loan signings next week so we can strengthen the defence and push on. Upson would have been good, but I am not gutted to miss out on him. There will be other options.

I'm sorry to hear that he won't be joining because if he could have been signed at the right price (in terms of wages, etc) then he could have been a very good signing as he would have given valuable experience to a very inexperienced back five (think Loach, Hewitt, Chambers, Smith, Cresswell).
I know that I have banged on about this for ages, but the real weakness in Mr Jewell's reign is his inability to sort out the defence. If we concede two goals a game then we will win some, but we make it so hard for ourselves. If we could only boast of "one-nil to the Ipswich" our league position would look so much better. Any chance of signing George Graham in a coaching capacity?

Menacinho - I have also been laughing at the bickering between the two of them perhaps they should go camping together!!

more on topic though - I think that dispite his age Upson would have been good for the town as he has strong experience and also we need some defenders!!!

I know we need a CB but Fraizerr Campbell is not in the Sunderland squad. Would like to be involved if he drops to championship

this is a pity IF HE WAS EVER likely to be coming ,could have given the defence a bit of assurance. As usual the moaners will have a field day taylor 17 ipswich 61 kesgrave,h32, and more to come ,if he had come here it would be wrong , that he prob isnt going to is wrong ! too much is hung on ''linked'' ,90% is media crap with little or no substance .I often wonder who the moaners think are available and within our financial constraints., that would get the Club to the dizzy heights they demand .H32 always telling people to wake up and get real, perhaps should take a leaf out of your own book . Or give us all the benefit of your wisdom and tell us who you would sign up with your magic wand .
