Jewell: Players Giving Me Everything They've Got
Wednesday, 3rd Oct 2012 06:00

Blues boss Paul Jewell says last night’s performance in the 1-1 draw at Brighton illustrates that the players are still giving him everything they’ve got even if he’s been made fully aware that he’s not flavour of the month with all supporters at present.

Speaking after last night’s game, Jewell said: “I’m a big boy, I’ve been around the block before and I know what’s going on.

"A guy told me to resign as I got off the coach today. It was quite interesting because he told me to resign after I’d turned round the corner. I thought that it was really brave of him, and I told him.

“But I understand that’s the way people are at the moment. However, you can see that the players are giving everything they’ve got.

“When that’s in question, when the players aren’t giving everything they’ve got, that’s when you need to move on. But I don’t think the players, even in the defeats we’ve had when we haven’t played great, I don’t think they’ve ever thrown the towel in.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s live Sky game (KO 5.20pm) against Cardiff — who took over from Brighton at the top of the Championship last night - the Blues boss, whose side are without a win in eight games and haven’t won at home since March 31st, is looking for his team to end those runs: “It’s a big game. Every game in this league is difficult in its own way.

"Cardiff have spent a lot of money, as a lot of clubs in this league have, and they’re going to expect to be up the top.

“We’ve got to try and match them and hopefully we can put on a decent show for our home supporters because our home results haven’t been what we’ve wanted, even though I think there have been some decent performances.

“Even in the Wolves game we created a host of opportunities, but we got punished for not taking them.”

Brighton boss Gus Poyet says opposition teams are beginning to come to the Amex Stadium with the same gameplan: "I'm starting to think everybody is rating us higher than we are.

“They rate us as a top team in this division and come here with a plan, to nick a goal and defend. That makes us put in all the effort. It becomes all about us and you need quality for that.

"But we need to get used to that because it is going to be the plan for every team that comes to the Amex.

"I can't ask for more. We took risks, we played with one defender and went for the win. It worked for Birmingham and it nearly worked for Ipswich, so credit to them."

@ blue fred,
Its not the sitting back that bothers me so much, its just we dont counter and give the other team something to think about, were totally capable of doing it and its really frutrating when we dont take a bigger bite of the cherry. Some say we dont have the team or the money for decent players but the truth is the team we have is good enough to win against any team in this league, we have seen dribs and drabs of it in the first eight games this season. Maybe its just a case of finding the right balance.

Michael 11 - respected club?? 20/30 years ago but not now - hence the title of this website.

If we had new owners, who promised European football, lauding new signings such as Beckham and Ronaldinho, sacking a manager and appointing a temporary manager until an experienced, well known manager is appointed - and the temporary manager get them relegated, playing awful football, dwindling attendences etc then you can understand why their football fans said enough is enough. The fans never got Kean out - he walked - but they have at least said you cannot keep ruining our club.

Defeat on Saturday and we will be staring relegation in the face - and you will walk meekly to each football match like the proverbial Lemming - accepting your fate and living on memories.

Like most on this site its heart breaking to see us starting and probably going through a another mediocore season, or worse. I personally don't feel PJ is right man for the job, however, I am not certain that anybody in the back office at this club has the ability to recruit the right man. This will be our 10th consecutive season in the Championship and I believe we are the longest serving club in this league, since the relegation of Preston & Coventry last season. To my mind I think that is where we are potentially heading as well, which hopefully night wake this club up. If you look at Southampton & Narwich (sorry to say it) they have re-emerged successfully from relegation to Div 1. For what its worth I would like to see Billy Davis appointed as manager of Ipswich tomorrow, he would easily sort out the on field issues, what to do about the back office staff at this club I have no idea. Evan's seems to be totally invisible & devoid of any long term plan or strategy apart from allowing the current crop of back office Clowns to waste his money and try to keep the wheels in motion.

I watch a lot of football at all levels and read a lot of the messages on club sites and nowhere have i come across so much whingeing, moaning and criticism as we get on here. What causes it, is it the area we live in, it's not just because we're near the bottom of the table. I've been a supporter of the Town since the 50s and there's always been moaning, Every manager, yes even Sir Bob and every No.9 inc Ray Crawford and Paul Mariner has borne the brunt of criticism from some of our so called supporters. What is the matter with you people ? I hate to say it but when that lot up the A140 got relegated to League One, their supporters didn't moan, 25,000 of them got behind their team at every home game and look what they did to us last year.
Jewell might not be the best manager in the world but until someone comes up with an adequate replacement i don't see why he should go.

Great comments from "thechangingman"..total common sense yet he gets people giving him minuses!..why,cos we've scraped 2 points in a row?!..jeezus!

The same misgided fools who thought Keane was going to turn things around no doubt.

Go on - hit your minus buttons as we drop over the edge...

Jewell says he'll go if he thinks the players aren't giving their all..what a joke..he hasn't the guts to walk away from what could be his last job.

Ok then Dog so maybe Blackburn have more right to their ridiculous chanting and banners then, but never heard Marcus Evans say we're going to sign Beckham or Ronaldinho so why should we stoop to their level. Also, you don't have to be a big club winning trophies every year to be respected.

It seems to me that Jewell thinks we have turned the corner after two draws, fair enough the points will come in handy but how can he say that the players are giving their all when we are still making stupid defensive blunders leading to goals ,if the players were giving their all we would be in the top six and yet again the likes of Jet was hopeless last night, one swallow doesnt make a Summer my friend and you need a win to get us up that table to save your A*se

I think if some of the moaners and groaners had been at last night's game in Brighton they might change their tune. I felt proud to be a Town fan with the commitment and organisation that the team showed. And our fans were behind them for all 95 minutes of the game. I know everyone is frustrated and disappointed with our form so far this season. But last night was not the performance of a team destined for a relegation battle. I think the home support on Saturday can make a huge difference to the confidence of the side. Get behind the team regardless of your feelings about Jewell.

Lovely to see that after our 2 terrific away draws, the "Keep the fafe" brigade have decided that we are World Beaters again, and anyone criticising Jewell is either a Norwich fan or a moron. Whereas, of course, THEY are the morons, incapable of intelligent or individual thought. We will never raise ourselves above our current level while Jewell is at the helm. He needs to go (and will, but probably only when we're about to be relegated), and so do most of the players.

Thanks Lighteningboy.

I too had wondered what I'd said that deserved a minus - was it that I had an opinion, or that I was feeling frustrated?

Who knows?

Anyway - the days ahead should clear things up shouldn't they?

@MrCool - WRONG!! I think you'll find there were quite a few supporters who never thought he was the right man as soon as he was appointed, I for one - was hugely underwhelmed - I think quite a few Derby supporters probably aren't surprised that the mess we are in.

Bluey123 how can you call yourself an ITFC supporter when you want them to lose, that kind of support is not helping anyone and not welcome on this forum. You comments are nothing short of disgraceful.

Is it me or am i missing something, listening to the game the other night, all the comments by Mick Mills made perfect sense, here is a man that is blue to the core, knows the game inside out, and would love the managers job, in my opinion we have the perfect replacement sitting on the radio doing the commentry, everything he said was spot on!

Daley - i dont see anyone saying we are world beaters, i just see normal , sensible people saying that after two very poor performances its good to see us get two hard fought points away from home.
Thats all. Cheer up.

PJ a few weeks ago said 'judge me after 10 games.' I'm sure I'm not the only one to remember that, so although I think we'll do well on Saturday (cardif away form poor), if we don't, the thoughts of fans on here and ME's thoughts should be interesting.
