Town Confirm McCarthy Manager
Thursday, 1st Nov 2012 09:10

Mick McCarthy has been confirmed as the new manager of Ipswich Town. The 53-year-old has signed a contract until the summer of 2015 and will be joined at Portman Road by his former Wolves assistant Terry Connor.

McCarthy said: “I’m obviously delighted to have been given the job as Ipswich Town manager and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“It’s a fantastic football club, with a proud tradition and history and a terrific fanbase.

“While the long-term ambition is to take the club back into the Premier League, it’s clear that the first priority is to get some confidence back into the team and start climbing the table.”

Blues chief executive Simon Clegg added: “I am delighted to welcome Mick and Terry to Portman Road.

“We are under no illusions of the challenge ahead for this club given our position in the table but we feel we have the right manager to lead that challenge.

“Mick has a wealth of knowledge in the game and has shown that he knows how to compete successfully in the Championship in his time at both Sunderland and Wolves.

“While the first task is to guide the club away from our current position, we believe Mick has all the credentials and drive to eventually bring success back to Ipswich Town.”

McCarthy has previously managed Millwall, Sunderland and Wolves at Championship level - taking the latter two clubs into the Premier League - and has an impressive record: Played 407 Won 185 Drew 115 Lost 107. His win rate at this level is 45.4%.

McCarthy and Clegg will hold a press conference at Portman Road at 5pm this evening which BBC Radio Suffolk is broadcasting live online.

Good luck to the new management team, they are as good a choice as anybody, I think they will need some luck to compliment their knowledge and experience and I hope the good times will soon return!
Just one negative, history tells us that this will eventually end in tears, later rather than sooner I hope. It could be in a years time when we are struggling in division 1 or hopefully in 3 or 4 years time when we are struggling in the premiership!

I feel a lot more positive about this appointment than I did about PJ's. Probably the ideal appointment given the circumstances.

Welcome to ITFC Mick McCarthy...I hope you have a long and successful spell with us.

Mr Clegg, get this straight, you need to change your transfer plan to support the manager and club and also purchase a more approachable personality

Thanks WolfgangWolf. That has to be the best endorsement of MM's appointment so far.

Great news! Good luck Mick - we're right behind you. I am also hoping to enjoy the irony of you being far more successful in this job than your harshest critic Mr Keane!

Agree with runningout, but great to have Mick McCarthy on board. Perhaps we will start looking forward to attending matches again, also get the season ticketr holders back who have not been attending recent games.

Can we as fans get behind the team at Portman Road, the support from the fans has been missing for quite a while.

Ey up, Mick, welcome aboard lad.

Great appointment and it feels right. Nice to have a proper, well respected manager back in charge of our club. Like Joe Royle, I think McCarthy will do rather well here despite some initial doubters.

I'll definitely be getting back to Portman Road more regularly now. COYB!

As someone who has to hold his hands up as being opposed from day one to the appointments of both Keane and Jewell I am very, VERY happy indeed to be able to express enthusiasm for the arrival of McCarthy at Portman Road.

I personally feel that there is nothing at all to be gained from being negative about his arrival. He is here until 2015 by which stage I hope and wish that we'll be in a lot healthier position (for me, this means there or thereabouts for the play-offs EVERY season!!!)

So, welcome to Portman Road Mick - we're all behind you - I hope that these early days will prove to be happy ones for us all...

These people who are writing "Boo" and "McCarthy out" Give the man a break! He hasn't even wiped his boots on the doormat yet and already you're against him.

Alright he may not have been your choice but if you are a true supporter you would back as he is now our manager and the man in charger of improving Town's fortunes.

I can only assume you do it:

1) so you can whinge "I told you so" if in three years time things haven't worked out as planned; or,

2) you're Narridge fans who are no worried that we will cross over when you come down and we go up!

ITFC has provided football with two former international managers.

Nice to get a former international manager back working for us (for a change)!

It must be at least 40 years since a manager was last appointed with Town in a lower position. Good luck Mick and restore some pride please.

Like some not my first choice, but really hope this time we got it right.

Please give the guy some time, miracles may not be performed straight away it really depend on what the dressing room is really like.

@Bergholtblue - I agree we should not condem before he arrives irrespective of our own opinions. But by the same token those posting joyous comments now will likely turn quickly if thing don't go well.

It interesting that the poll was 75-25 for most of the last few days but has headed to 80-20 since the announcment.

I saw one comment on here that make the right point.

Let MM manage
Let US support.

I got minuses for posting similar before but what I here week in week out in the North Stand is disgraceful for those that call themselves supporters. It's time to regain the atmosphere in Portman Road

Good Luck Mick & Co.
