McCarthy: Point Gained
Saturday, 24th Nov 2012 18:03

Town boss Mick McCarthy felt that ultimately the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Peterborough was a point gained rather than one lost with Posh having gone in front in the first half.

McCarthy said it could be seen as either points dropped or one gained: “You can see it both ways I guess. It’s a point won.

“I haven’t seen the goal we conceded yet to pick the bones out of it but it looked like another soft and milky goal.

“People just score against us too easily, but I won’t know the reasons why until I see it. We didn’t play well in the first half, we couldn’t pass it to our team-mates.

“But it was coming, the performance, towards the end of the first half we were getting better and thankfully we improved in the second half with a bit more intensity and I think we deserved the point certainly, that’s for sure.”

The Blues manager thought there was no argument with Mark Halsey’s decision to award the spotkick: “I thought it was a penalty, I thought it was a stonewall penalty, to be honest.

“He got him stood up and as he’s gone past him he’s clipped his foot. He may have gone down slowly but it was a penalty.”

He had no issue with the crowd’s reaction to the first half display: “I understand that they deserved to boo us off. We were pretty poor in the first half, I’ve no problem with that at all.

“In the second half I thought there was a response from everybody, from the players and from the crowd. We were getting better, we were starting to look better and goals, penalties, make everyone feel better.

“There were chances at both ends, the game became really stretched,” he added. “We were trying to win it and we were in danger losing it in trying to win it.

“Their keeper made a good save, Hendo made a good save from the shot. They broke on us a couple of times. DJ Campbell clips it with his studs and if he gets a bit more on it he scores. It wasn’t great, it was exciting.”

McCarthy says Nigel Reo-Coker is definitely out of the Nottingham Forest match: “He’s hurt his hamstring so there’s no chance of him playing on Tuesday. He might be out for two or three weeks.”

Posh boss Darren Ferguson said his side would have won if they scored a second goal: “I am disappointed that we didn’t get the three points. I think it was a lost opportunity.

“We just needed that second goal. That was our biggest frustration. If we get the second goal, I think we win the game.”

He had no argument with the penalty: “No, I don’t think so. I haven’t seen it again. Lee Tomlin doesn’t think it was, he felt it was soft, but one of my coaches sits in the stand and he thought it was a penalty. He’s given it, so it is.”

Glad Reo Coker is out and agree with many of you on here that he shouldn't play again. Send Henderson back to West Ham cos the bloke is useless in my opinion, get Hyam in for Tuesday and keep 2 up front. Its gonna be a bloody long season but I think Mick will keep us up but I can't believe what ITFC have become! Team full of loan players that the fans can't respect, no heart or spirit going into games, very disappointing

walk the walk. of course youll get minus points when you make such a ridiculous comment. mm is a proper manager. but hes walked into a total mess left by the last 2 incumbents. a mess hes not able to start to sort out properly until jan. h32. dont think youll find mm was satisfied with a point other than the fact with how badly we played up to the penalty getting us back into the game. but the fact we were a goal behind meant that we could at least be satisfied that we had managed to salvage something from the game.

marshallmania. guess you someone else commenting on here who wasnt at the game yesterday. henderson had his best game for us yesterday. apart from misjudging one cross he didnt do a single thing wrong, in fact if it wasnt for him wed have lost the match. if you were there then i guess you were one of the morons slagging him off.

Yes have to agree Henderson played reasonably well with 2 good second half saves, looked a bit edgy first half but other than that played reasonably well - defense and centre midfield still a cause for concern.

nffc1865, your not exactly pulling any trees up this year so I would stick to your own club website.

Anyway I thought you lot were going to be the Man City of the Championship?! Hows that going?

On matters ITFC, Henderson played well but I would still stick Loach back in as he is the long term future at the club.

As for Chambers, I actually think the best game I have seen him this season (in fact the whole back 4 play) was at home to Burnley were he played right back.

Please don't play Tommy Smith as right CB, he has to take time to shift the ball to his left peg all the time before he can clear. Don't put extra pressure on the lad, he is the future.

A point gained on the strength of the 1st half yes but surely 2 points lost against a fellow struggling team when we are the home team?
I still trust MM to get us through this terrible period in the clubs history and i think January will see a number of changes when he can start to really shape his own team.
After all lets not forget he's working with the shambles Jewell left him with.
Reo Coker out for a few weeks and IMO this could be a good thing.
Fingers crossed for a gutsy display on Tuesday.COYB.

1 shot on target in 90mins against a poor Peterborough side. Not MM fault but by god our squad is a shambles

PJewellisagod - can't agree re: Smith. Apart from a tendency to favour his left foot (something forgiveable in a left footed player) he made one significant mistake, then pursued the player at pace, with sufficient pressure to force a poor shot. To suggest he should be a back up to a back up of Chambers or Higginbotham is incredible.

As for Martin, a handful of runs at an opposition player (including for the penalty), but an awful lot of killing the pace in a move and missing his pass then berating the nearest player in a blue shirt for not having the psychic capacity to get to the ball.

The only way we were going to score was with a penalty, let's be thankful for small mercies.
