Skipper an Example to Youngsters
Wednesday, 24th Apr 2013 09:27

Manager Mick McCarthy says skipper Carlos Edwards is a good example to young players at the club. The Trinidadian was made captain by former boss Paul Jewell and has kept the armband since the change of management in November.

McCarthy said: “Carlos is a really good example to any young player. To be 34 and have the levels of fitness that he’s got.

“And with the way he conducts himself. He comes in and has a smile on his face, he trains well every day. He’s a good person to have around the place, and I guess that’s why Paul made him the captain and that’s why he’s still captain with me.”

He says that while Edwards isn’t an overly vocal skipper he goes about the role in his own manner: “We all have different attributes, but what he does is do his job properly, he’s a good professional and that reflects and everybody respects that.

“Is he a demonstrative captain shouting and ranting? No he’s not. But he just goes about his job in a nice, calm and collected way. And he does it with a nice smile on his face.”

Edwards is contracted to the Blues for another season having made enough appearances to trigger an option for a further season earlier in the campaign.

To be fair, Edwards can't drive anymore - so perhaps having to pop out on his bicycle to get the family milk to helping all round =^>

First thing I disagree with Mick over. Edwards has played well in circa 10 percent of matches ,his influence over the team on match days is not great. All opinion , but for me a leader needs to be someone who drives the team on a matchday ,is vocal , and so on.

The important thing for me is we now have leaders all over the pitch. Nobody can doubt that Edwards is a fantastic professional and so long as he is in the team then he deserves to keep the armband. Would love to see Tommy Smith become captain in the future, but at the minute it should rightly be a more senior pro.

the only way he has been a poor leader is his driving antics, a leader at ipswich must also be able to make the club look good off the field. I feel he brings an uplift to the team whether it's by performance or by being 34 he knows what to say and when to say it?

Carlos has been more good than bad for town and I like the fact that Mick has rewarded loyalty and effort. In my opinion, the skipper should be part of the defence where you can see all the match most of the time. As a winger Carlos spends much of his time trying to find space and beating a defender, where as a defender is mostly looking forward at all the play; a better position to see problems that need addressing during the game. Love him to bits but the skipper should be either Smith or Chambo, probably Chambo as a vocal skipper is a must. COYB.

Difficult one this. I agree with bluefeast in that Edwards has not been at his best for a large part of the season and gives the impression that he is quiet and not a leader, although what he is like off the pitch, who knows. He did himself no favours with the driving charges, but he does seem to be the consummate professional. I personally would like to see either Luke Chambers or Tommy Smith given the armband and take the weight of the captaincy off his shoulders, as I am thinking it may be affecting his performances.

Good example to youngsters? What constantly getting fined and banned for driving offences. Yeah brilliant example.

....... I think MM would be a far better judge of Edwards professionalism within the Club than pundits on here - after all he has just about saved the Club from relegation - or have I missed something ?

I do not understand why some idiots on this site gives minus votes to a member who 's comments basically mirrors the other posters, they clearly have a collective age of maybe 10...if that. Total bunch of T*ssers. If you have constructive comments on my ideas of football, state them , grow a pair and put your name to it.

I agree Lenny Boy , the minus brigade are clearly odd. Re Carlos as captain I would add that having missed only one game home or away this year its so clear that he lacks communication on the pitch when its really needed. Example at home to Bristol city ,he played a short pass to hyam , and looked to everyone hyam included that he wanted a return pass ,but his run took him towards two city players , the end result looked like hyam gave the ball away. That was Edwards fault. That's one of numerous

Shame he couldn't have been a good example to others on Sat vs Wednesday. Got into so many decent positions, only for the final ball to let him down. Otherwise, it could have been a very convincing outcome.

bluefeast that is way more of a performance thing than being a good captain

Those of us who were at derby a few weeks ago will remember his solo effort in extra time to score the winning goal. Without those 2 extra points a lot more people on this forum would be worrying about us staying up. I don't think anybody else in the side would have been capable of running half the length of the pitch and then beating the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.
If that is the kind of thing MM means by leading from the front that will do for me.

@lennyboy I think it was Jonathan Swift who said "if men of genius would stop complaining about critics and detractors, the next age would not know they had any"

I don't think he was referring to being minus-ed on internet forums about football... but hey! it's a good line.

Do hope he is not an example on all fronts.. his ban is still fresh, and was for a serious offence, excuse me for harping on

Tractorog, thank you for at least putting a name to what was possibly a minus mark given, and I whole heartedly agree with the quotation you used. Yet even now I have had a minus figure and not even you have told me what it is you disagree with. Thanks for calling me a genius too, I shall ensure always to mark your posts positively in future. I have no problem with constructive critics and welcome them putting me right if I'm wrong, but nobody has said what it was they disagreed with.
