Sheepshanks Backs Burley
Sheepshanks Backs Burley
Tuesday, 11th Dec 2001 09:50

Town chairman has again backed George Burley as the man to get Town out of the current mess. he has also dismissed alleged rumours which apparently claimed that a Terry Venables-type figure would come in to lend support to George Burley or that Burley imminently faced the sack.

Sheepshanks also denied that Burley may be on his way to Rangers in the near future after the Town boss was included on a four-man shortlist for the Ibrox job: "I know George is completely committed to Ipswich Town and to restoring our fortunes in the Premiership. In George we have a manager who guided us to fifth in the Premiership and to the UEFA Cup third round. That was not done by luck but by skill, persistence, judgement and belief. George signed a new four-year deal earlier this year and we see him as the name to carry on with us un the Premiership."

It seems supporters agree with Sheepshanks with the current TWTD poll revealing that 80.2% of supporters see Burley as the man to drag Town out of the mire.

There have been a lot of unpleasant and untrue rumours around Town recently, although the suggestions of an imminent Burley sacking or a Terry Venables-style appointment are new ones on us and appear to be the invention of a journalist. Sheepshanks has however, heard much of the tittle-tattle: "I have heard some of the rumours and they are unhelpful and utter rubbish."
