Doncaster Midfielder Offered Training Chance
Wednesday, 12th Jun 2013 09:32

Town and Bristol City are reported to have offered released Doncaster Rovers midfielder Martin Woods the chance to join them for pre-season training. The 27-year-old, who played for Mick McCarthy during his time as boss at Sunderland, has spent much of the last three seasons on the sidelines due to a groin injury.

The Scot, who was previously linked with a loan move to the Blues in September last year, is hoping to be fit for pre-season — which Town start in the final week of this month - having been recommended an orthodontic approach to his injury problems, which will realign his body, by specialists in Italy.

Last season he made 19 appearances, the year before only five and in 2010/11 he appeared 15 times.

Airdrie-born Woods started his career with then-Premier League Leeds, spending a month on loan with Hartlepool in 2004/05.

After the Whites, for whom he had made only one senior sub appearance, dropped out of the top flight he moved on to Sunderland, where he made two starts and six sub appearances, before joining Rotherham on a free in the summer of 2007.

A year later Woods, who has been capped by Scotland at U17, U19 and U21 levels, moved on to Doncaster, where he played under current Bristol City boss Sean O'Driscoll, and aside from a month on loan at Yeovil in 2008 he remained there until his release this summer.

I don't disagree with getting players in on trial - particularly if they have a poor injury history, or haven't played a lot of football for a while.

Sounds like poor old Mick really hasn't got any money to spend. Seems like Big Jim, RK & PJ wasted it & now we are scrapping the barrel, big time.

I dont mind if he comes but we already have enough centre mid.
all this scraping the barrel stuff is nonsense. we have agreed deals for mcgoldrick murphy and skuse all good players and anyway how the team is managed familiarity and squad togetherness not to mention a bit of luck counts for more than cash in this league when it comes to the play off places.
agree with maninashed forrester is no better than martin which is why he offered martin a deal and is yet to offer forrester one.
i know its exiting when your team signs a player but there is really no point signing loads of them as we can only play 11

I dont mind him coming for MM to have a look but am getting concerned at our apparent lack of any funds to use as transfer fees.

Dont get me wrong, I'm all for getting in a few bargains but I would like to think we can put a decent fee together for the right player(s). At the moment no evidence we can but having said that still early days I suppose.

It is not a lack of funds for transfers, ther simply is no money. The club has stated this previously, we will only be signing out of contract players.

But that alone is not the real problem (and danger). There are plenty of good players out there who are out of contract for one reason or another - one being THEY have allowed their contract to run down and are looking to improve their lot without the burden of a transfer fee.

However if we cannot compete on a wages level, if they can get better money elsewhere then we really are only going to get 'what's left' ie the one our competitors don't want.

I trust MM to get the best out of what is available in his squad - he has shown that already, and is in te process of clearing out those who are not fully committed. However you can only work with what you have got and that is not very much at the moment.

And the worry is that it won't be that much better come Aug 31st, with only a few loanees to patch things up come mid Sept.
