FA Confirm England U21s at Portman Road Monday, 2nd Sep 2013 18:07 The FA have confirmed that Portman Road will host the England U21 side's Euros qualifier against Lithuania on Tuesday 15th October. TWTD revealed that town were to host the game a week ago. With the England senior side playing Poland in a World Cup qualifier the same day, the match will kick off at 6pm and will be shown live on BT Sport. Former Blue Connor Wickham is a current member of the U21 squad and the striker could make a return to his former home ground. New U21s coach Gareth Southgate is pleased to be bringing his side to Suffolk: “I’m really looking forward to this game. “Whenever we take our games all around the country, the reaction of supporters has been brilliant. “I think we’ll be seeing an exciting group of young players who people will look forward to going to watch. “It’s great news for us because I think we’ll get a very good crowd there, they’ll be very supportive. “They’ve got a crowd that are knowledgeable about their football too, so that will be a real lift for us as a team.” Blues joint-MD Ian Milne added: “We are delighted we have been chosen to host this prestigious game. It’s fantastic news for Ipswich Town Football Club. “It will be a chance for our supporters to watch some of the most exciting young players in the country in action for the national team.” England’s U21s were last at Portman Road in August 2006 for a 2-2 draw with Moldova when debutant Theo Walcott and David Nugent were on the scoresheet. Prior to that, Town hosted the full England side in August 2003 when they defeated Croatia 3-1 in a friendly. Portman Road has also been the venue for England U21 matches against Switzerland (1980, 5-0), Romania (1985, 3-0), Albania (1989, 2-0) and the Czech Republic (1998, 0-1). An U23 side including ex-Blues boss Joe Royle drew 1-1 with Switzerland in 1971. In 2001/02, the England U19s beat Germany 3-1. The ground also played host to a 1959 pre-Olympic Games friendly between Great Britain and the Caribbean FA ahead of the 1960 Games in Rome. Tickets for the game cost £10 for adults and £5 for concessions and can be bought online from ITFC Direct. A family ticket can be bought for £20 by calling 0871 964 2116.
