Mixed Feelings for Mings
Tuesday, 19th Nov 2013 09:41

Town youngster Tyrone Mings admits he has mixed feelings about being behind Aaron Cresswell in the first team pecking order.

Mings is currently standing in for Cresswell during his two-game suspension for picking up a red card soon after the final whistle in the 1-1 home draw with Barnsley.

The 20-year-old is again set to deputise in the home game against high-flying Leicester on Saturday but the smart money would be on Cresswell reclaiming his first team slot once he has completed his ban.

Mings admits it will be hard having to make way for the player that manager Mick McCarthy has consistently labelled the Championship’s best left-back.

He said: “Yes, it will be frustrating because I want to play, but I also learn a lot from Cressy and from how he plays, what he does and how good he is on the ball. It’s good to learn but I also want to play and show what I can do.”

With Town U21 coach Mark Kennedy also a former left-back it means Mings does not have to go far to receive the right advice in order to progress his career.

He added: “I’ve got two very good people here that I can learn from. I speak to Cressy and Mark, and I ask questions. Cressy does give me advice — he’s been in a lot more situations than I have. Mark has been in a lot more situations than both of us, so I still speak to him about it as well.”

Mings has made three senior starts and one sub appearance for the Blues but Saturday's game will see him make his home debut.

heady he will be as good if not better than Creswell..... is a bigger stronger player as he can be left sided CB too which Cressie cant. ATM its is positioning that needs working on, he is very attacking but can get caught at the back.

He is a lovely chap and talks very well, you need to have confidence in yourself to get anywhere. He will come into his own if and when Cressy goes.

he will not become a better LB than Cresswell, he is demanding in the air but he needs games but I can see him becoming a good CB in a couple of years. he needs games and at the moment he is not good enough to displace Smith or Chambers.

@Marshalls_Mullet - absolutely not. Cressy would be far less effective playing the midfield role. He won't have the same amount of room to work in. He is fabulous running from the LB (deep) position and getting beyond our LM. If he played in the LM slot - he won't be nearly as effective with his runs.

He's a great LB and we should use him in that position.

Tyrone, after Jan you'll have a great chance to show what you can do after Cresswell leaves

I have seen all of Mings championship game time so far and agree with MM that he can be a top player for us, he needs to keep working at his game ,cos his positional sense needs to improve but that should come in time. If we hold on too Cressy he might become a midfield player who can regularly make runs into the opposition box and add to his goals tally. Just a thought. MGoldrick could do a midfield role for us was my take,on the forum pre season, he got his first chance in the role at Blackpool! we all know how that turned out.

Need to go to games then!
He was awesome at Blackpool & in most cases you'd need a very good reason to drop him. We have a very good reason in Cressy but Tyrone is more than capable of stepping up. Players like him are our future & its looking better by the minute.

He's only played a couple of games but the general view is that he might be a good player. We need to accept that our exceptional players like Cressie might be up for transfer and thus we need good back up. With Mings I feel we have it.

To me the logical solution is to play both in the same team as Cressy could quite easily step into left midfield and I am sure that the two of them could work together, interchanging seamlessly.
We seem to insist on playing right footers on the left ...........round pegs in square holes!

Great to have strength in depth at LB!

I bet MM would love to have held on to Stearman for the RB position.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the January window.

The lad is right footed and as Hewitt is out on loan and we are playing a cb in the position why not give the lad a go at right back? Berra is awesome but I think the smith and chambo partnership is the best partnership
