Berra Wins Cap as Late Sub

Centre-half Christophe Berra came on as a 94th minute sub and won his 28th full cap as Scotland beat Norway 1-0 in a friendly in Molde this evening.

The 28-year-old was involved for his country for the first time since joining the Blues and is the first Town player to represent Scotland since John Wark played in a 2-1 defeat to East Germany in a European Championships qualifier in Halle in November 1983.

Meanwhile, academy striker Jonny Smith came on as a 60th minute sub as Northern Ireland’s U17s lost 2-0 to Turkey in their final European Championships qualifier in Dungannon this afternoon.

The Northern Irish, who were hosting the mini-tournament, finished third in the group and won’t progress to the next stage of qualification.

Skipper Carlos Edwards will be in action for Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly against Jamaica overnight, while Tommy Smith will captain New Zealand in the second leg of their World Cup play-off against Mexico at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington early tomorrow morning with the visitors 5-1 up from the first match.

What a total waste of time and energy. I can just about understand late substitutions in a competitive match to disrupt the opposition etc but in a meaningless friendly?
On the question of full backs I think it's crazy to play arguably our best centre half at right back when we have genuine right backs more than capable sitting on the bench, not in the squad or worse out on loan.
I accept we are doing much better than under Keane or Jewell but we are still a mediocre 2nd division team with no real prospect of going anywhere soon and I certainly find it harder and harder to justify paying money upfront for a season ticket.

bigtimecharlie added 09:39 - Nov 20 I expect Christophe was extremely proud to represent his country (albeit for short duration) - not everybody can boast they have represented their country, fact is he's good enough and was deemed good enough to play a part last night. Another cap for the cabinet, a good win for the Scots and Christophe returns fit and well for the weekend.

BuckieBlue added 18:32 - Nov 20 For the benefit of anyone who didn't see it, it was comical, Berra was waiting for a minute or two to come on but the ball stayed in play; eventually on for 1 minute max but did manage to get a decent header in to earn his cap!
