Woody Working Doubly Hard to Get Fit
Wednesday, 22nd Jan 2014 13:03

Midfielder Anthony Wordsworth is working doubly hard to get back to full fitness after his recent bouts of tonsillitis, an illness which he says has affected him on several occasions in the last few years.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Blues from Colchester a year ago, is working with fitness coach Andy Liddell as he looks to add to his one start — in the home FA Cup tie against Preston earlier in the month — and two sub appearances this season.

“I’ve had two flare ups lately,” he said, speaking in an interview in next Saturday’s match programme. “One over the Christmas period and the other after the Preston game at Portman Road.

“That game brought on my second bout. They say that when you are fatigued, it can hit you. That’s what happened. I’ve been getting attacks two or three times a year over the last couple of years.

“Playing in that game definitely triggered the attack and in some ways I’m glad it did because it meant that I needed to see a specialist and could get to the bottom of what the problem was.

“In May, I’ll be having my tonsils out. Before that, I want to concentrate on getting myself fit. I’m working hard, doing two sessions a day with Lids. Hopefully after another week or two I’ll be in a better position to get some games.

“I want to be a success at Ipswich Town. I want to get my fitness up and give the manager a real problem with leaving me out.”

Speaking last week, manager Mick McCarthy said he wasn’t ruling out Wordsworth going out on loan to get games under his belt: “He’s had a long time out, so we’ll see about [whether he goes out on loan]. If he’s not going anywhere, then I want him fit to play for me.”

Feel a bit sorry for Woody. Looked okay in the short spell in the team before he got that back injury last season. Can't really judge him on the few appearances he has made for Town. Pity because we need someone to give us something different in the middle of the park.

Come on. This guy looked OK jumping up a Division at the end of last year. Then he got that awful injury which would have finished a lot of players. He's needed to get back to fitness...and has had no competitive football. Anyone who's prone to tonsillitis knows how awful it is. Give him a chance.

Alwaysablue. If Wordsworth turns out to be a real asset to the club I'll take it all back. I'm not always negative but say it like it is - sorry if I offend a few. Just because we don't all think the same is what makes these comment pages interesting. I look forward to the day when Wordsworth is back to peak fitness and is the missing player in midfield that we all crave so badly. I have had tonsilitus badly and had my tonsils out at the age of 31, not nice but it's hardly major surgery is it, so why not get it over with now?

Wordsworth has had chances to impress since he has been here, and I keep saying he has been here long enough to impress if not on the pitch in training and he hasn't. It's not always all about on the pitch. If you labour around you won't stay around - ask Jet. You can argue that Jet has scored loads of goals at Bristol, that's Bristol, he couldn't be bothered here could he.

Give me a team of 100% committed players any day. Having said that, that is what Mick is trying to get going here, but we do need more skillful players than we have at present. The days of Frans Thissen and Arnie Muhren are a very distant memory.

I hope that answers all your questions Alwaysablue and I like you can't wait for the glory days to be back at Portman Road, but I think you'll agree there are many tough decisions still to be made but we all share the same dream of one day being a lot better than we are at present and getting some flair and skill back into our football club.

Personally I think Wordsworth has something to offer, obviously his illness scenario needs resolving post haste, I agree with previous posters than it can be quite serious and debilitating and should be seen as such.

Not sure if this is an ITFC trait only, but we tend to give some players far more than a 'fair' chance to prove themselves / improve their game - and some not anywhere near enough.

Cloddtseedbed - .... and what did Thijssen & Muhren have in abundance ? - CREATIVITY & FLAIR.

Capable of creating something from nothing - throughout even the toughest games.
Two very clever players & and a joy to watch.

blueboy1981, 2 very clever players indeed and a joy to watch, maybe we should go back to Holland to find the players we need. They will have to sign for nothing though - that's the problem!

Get rid of him he is is lazy never fit and not gonna help take us forward, we should of realised our mistake when we bought him and almost all Colchester fans were happy to see him leave because of his laziness. Sell him if we can get a fee for him or use him in a swop deal. He is bottom half championship club quality at best and not what we need if we have ambitions to be top half/top 6.

Should have done a deal with Donny. Nouble for Sharp. No brainer.

Shame that Wordsworth has been injured for the majority of his time with us. Difficult to really assess his ability. However, our current midfield is very lacking in terms of quality, skills and attacking ability. Wordsworth can't do any worse but needs a run in the team. Question is will he stay fit long enough? He was also poor against Preston.

Sorry to hear he is not well but quite honestly he is not the answer to our problems. We need flair players and the transfer window is soon closing. I dread Saturdays game!

Skuse and Wordsworth are both quality players - both with a very similar pose to Owen Garvan.
These type of players appear to some as lazy because they have a controlled stance of play about them, and don't tear around like the Tabb's of this game - don't let me hear anyone say Garvan wasn't a Creative & Flair player,he just appeared somewhat laid back and lazy, but such players do.

Only complicated players make the game look complicated.

to all you disallusioned town fans. Since when does tonsililitis make you unable to play a forward pass? I took my whole extended family to the Preston game. He was hopeless. Didn't have a clue, no creativity and well out of his depth. He got the ball turned round and passed it back, virtually every time. Both Wordsworth and Noble wouldn't get into the Cambridge Utd team right now so god knows why they are getting the game in the championship. Someone said no one played well in that game. I disagree, when Taylor and Mcgoldrick came on we saw some quality and I thought both played well.

I for one don't believe Woody has been given a fair crack compared to Nouble,Tabb,Anderson,Tunnicliffe ,the failing partnership of Skuse and Hyam with Hyam as the attacking midfieler breaking down the opposition who get picked week in week out for average or poor performances week after week ? The same way I do not believe JET was allowed the same luxury or Taylor to have a run of games in the starting line up . But Woody was an MM signing which makes it more confusing , and its not like we are in a position where everyone is playing top football and we are creating numerous chances and scoring loads of goals so why not change it MM and try something different

Reading the above thread, quite clearly he had a terrible game against Preston (as did the rest), however this again is a situation which is not helped by the lack of a competetive combination league. If we had that rather than the U21, then players who have been out could get some sensible match practice as they build towards the first team, rather than going out and having to prove themselves in a pressurised environment.
