Town Closing In On Green
Friday, 7th Feb 2014 18:14

TWTD understands Town are close to completing the signing of Leeds midfielder Paul Green on loan. The deal looks set to be confirmed over the weekend with Green, 30, available for selection at Barnsley if the paperwork is completed before noon on Saturday.

However, speaking on Thursday, manager Mick McCarthy said he didn't expect the player he was looking to recruit to be in his squad at Barnsley.

Earlier this afternoon, TWTD revealed the Blues had renewed their interest in Green having pulled out of a deal a week ago, the Whites wanting Town to pay too great a proportion of his wages.

Speaking last Saturday, the Blues manager didn’t rule out making a new attempt to sign Green on a 93-day emergency loan, but said he would also look at other options.

Former Town man Owen Garvan was amongst those eyed, although his ongoing patellar tendinitis may have meant that move was viewed as too risky, while an agreement regarding wages may again have been difficult.

Green was previously linked with the Blues during Paul Jewell’s time as boss, the former Town manager having signed him during his spell at Derby.

Pontefract-born Green started his career with Doncaster Rovers, joined Derby on a free transfer in the summer of 2008 and then moved on to Leeds in June 2012, signing a two-year deal. He has been capped 20 times by Ireland, scoring once.

The 5ft 9in tall midfielder has made 42 starts and four sub appearances during his time with Leeds, scoring four goals, one in last season's 2-0 defeat of the Blues at Elland Road.

Green hasn’t played a first team game for the Whites since October, having suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty in November but returned to training in January.

We need cover and competition for places, but we also need a goal scoring attacking midfielder. Green is unfortunately not that man. Poor goal scoring record, hard worker, but similar to our other midfield players.

PAUL GREEN will give this club everything he has thats the type of guy he is no doubt about that, but what difference this gives us Im not sure.He will fight for every ball but is that what we need NO in my view.MM give us a player that will give us something new ,take a gamble MM as we have enough Paul Greens thank you...

Not impressed with this to be honest. Every time ive seen him hes just been an average joe, no better than what we have.
If we are taking him over Garvan it means we are gona keep playing the scrappy type football we have been playing all season.
Cant have everything i suppose....

Disappointed the supposed player close to joining isnt Garvan/ similar cam like Dorrans. When Hyam is back there is absolutely no need for a player like Green surely?! Also on Dorrans, he is quality...how come we couldnt even inquire to WBA about a loan? Pretty sure hes not in the 25 man squad

Maybe is one of those like Carrick or Cleverley. No ones really sure what they do but whatever it is, is in fact rather essential

Will you school children forget about Garvan. He has a knee problem that could well curtail his career.

Dorrans is on premier money so that will surely scupper any deal, not that there was one anyway.

Green will give us a bite in midfield and if honest would rather him than Hyam!

floridaboy just cause someone would like us to bring in a footballing midfielder as opposed to a yard dog doesnt make them school children.
Id say 90% of fans have been calling for a playmaker for months as its obvious to anyone who goes to the games that that is what the teams missing, not another skuse/hyam/tabb clone.

Certainly agree with the calls for Dorrans, really good player.

Green however, don't know much about him, seems like a typical Mick McCarthy player, seasoned pro being brought in for cover, just like Richardson. May not be the exciting prospect we want, but right now it is more of a necessity.

One thing I would say is Mick did look to sign young pacey players such as Joel Grant in summer. That didn't come off but I think it shows he will look to do the same in the future. This season was about consolidation, needing players like Hunt, Murphy, Skuse, to do the nitty gritty stuff. And it's worked, more so than any of us would have expected I'd say.

We can't have it all at once, it's been a very strong season so far, wherever we end up I'm sure Mick will bring in the right mix of youth and experience over summer.

Shame its not Garvan, just hope he is creative, can't be any worse than Tabb!

thebeat - When you look at our team average Joe's just about sum it up. That's not a criticism.
Look at where we are in the league compared to last season, we have a team of average players who are playing for each other, under a manager who has had very little scope to manage regarding the fiscal issues at the club.
You can't blame ME for wanting to see that he has a manager in MM, that can put together a side which has cost naff all. Maybe it's a case of lets see what MM can do with little or no money before he is prepared to let another manager waste his fortunes on buying woefully bad players who don't or won't fit in.
We as fans all want to see the fluent passing game back at PR, but i will not happen in one or two seasons.
Now that MM has weedled out the expensive dross of money grabbing primadonna's that other managers brought in, having given them all a decent chance to prove there worth, we can all see what a difference it's made.
Let's just keep the belief going that MM has a long term plan and support every one at the club to do it.
Onwards and upwards COYB's.

On the flip side what happens if Hunt picks up a longish term injury or pulls a hamstring which can easily be done at his age and the type of player he is, do we have any cover for him? the answer is no, we have Anderson but he hasn't achieved that much when in that position and Mick has been playing him on the right and the other player Taylor (for creativity or to add a spark) is obviously not in Mick's good books so if we lose Hunt we're stuffed and Green just adds to the so so list of midfielders who can do a similar job, workman like and reasonably versatile.

Steelmonkey i take your points on board but as i said on here recently i am very grateful to Mick for the job he's done but this season we arent gona make the play offs and we wont go down so we have done the stabilising job.
I dont care if we finish 8th or 15th, it wouldnt hurt to bring in a proper midfielder and try and play some football to set us up for a proper push next year.
