McCarthy Delighted to Sign "Good Character" Green
Monday, 10th Feb 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with Paul Green’s debut from the bench during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Barnsley and also to have added the 30-year-old Leeds midfielder to his squad on a 93-day loan.

The Town manager revealed that Green, who came close to scoring a last-minute winner when his close range strike from Stephen Hunt’s cross was blocked, completed the formalities of his move on Friday evening with the paperwork rubber-stamped by noon on Saturday so he could take a place on the bench at Oakwell.

“He met us at the hotel and had a medical there,” McCarthy said. “I thought he was excellent during the time he had on.

“He was very unfortunate, was it a block or a save? But he was in the box and nearly got the winner for us.

“He’ll be good for us Greeny, he’s a good character. He’s got a bit of quality, he’s certainly got energy, he’s got a goal in him and he’s an experienced, 30-year-old central midfield player, and we don’t have many of them.

“And he’s a proper character, the same as Frazer Richardson. Not that old, around 30 years of age, they’re both good characters, it gives us a lovely bit of experience.”

McCarthy says that if the spell goes well, it could lead to a longer term stay with Green’s Leeds terms up at the end of June: “Like anybody who is out of contract, who comes in. He’s looking for a deal somewhere and if he does it with us, why not?”

Meanwhile, on-loan right-back Freddie Veseli and Bury’s game at Torquay succumbed to the weather, while Jack Marriott’s Woking weren’t scheduled to play and Elliott Hewitt served a one-match ban as Gillingham won 2-1 at Carlisle following his red card in midweek.

Elsewhere, Town's U18s returned to action for the first time since Christmas but were beaten 2-0 at Millwall.

Some sensible posts above.

We don't know what goes on in the dressing room, but is pretty clear that MM wants it populated by good characters who build a team spirit. Sir Alf didn't need any 'prima donna' international players to win the old Div 1 or the old Div 2. To start with Sir Bobby had to sort out a few things/players who were 'trouble'. You have only got to look at the England Cricket team's disaster in the Ashes series to see how someone who is not 'a good character' (to put it mildly) can undermine the whole team's performance.

Considering his undoubted talents, presumably this is what's behind Paul Taylor's lack of games.

Amazing how Mick attracts players from all over the UK to "boring" ipswich .

He must commant so much respect within the game.

Yes, Mr McCarthy's signings have generally been spot on and the players which he has let go have not done much elsewhere. I hope that the posts above are correct and that Green et al push us on to a play off place.

Yet there is one thing that bothers me. It is the lack of young players coming through/being given a chance. I fear that constantly signing 30 something players is disappointing and showing little confidence in our youth set up. Remember that many of the great managers (e.g. Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alex Ferguson) have had the courage to push young players forward.

This season has been a long time coming, finally we are moving in the right direction and the playoffs look like likely for us. However... I personally would rather see us remain in the championship for next season and build further on the squad we,ve got and then go up with a stronger team. It seems fairly obvious that Mick is shaping a squad to get us to the premiership next season. At least that's what I think.

Good character, run all day, works hard, a typical Boring Billy signing. Should put an extra 3000 or so on the gate for the next home game!!!

Bring on Sylvan. Perfect timing!!

Agree with other posters on here. Paul Taylor should start ahead of big Frank. I think Nouble was the only risk that MM and TC have made. Frank has not happened . . . yet, but I still hope he can turn the corner. Has he considered playing with a left boot and a right boot? 2 left feet appears to be his problem.
