Town Set to Sign Palace Midfielder
Wednesday, 26th Feb 2014 21:45

Town are reportedly set to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams on loan. The 20-year-old Wales international impressed and scored the first goal for the Eagles’ U21s in Monday’s 2-1 victory over their Blues counterparts at Portman Road.

According to the South London Press Town have fought off competition from Charlton — who were represented at Monday’s game — to land Williams.

Born in Kent, 5ft 6in tall Williams came through the youth system at Selhurst Park and made his senior debut in August 2011.

Since then he has gone on to make 27 starts and 37 sub appearances, scoring one goal, but has not started a Premier League game since the Eagles' promotion last summer. In September he suffered an ankle injury which sidelined him for two months.

Highly-rated Williams, who recently signed a new contract with Palace until the summer of 2018, was a constant threat on the left of midfield on Monday and can also operate in the centre and on the right.

Qualifying via his father, Williams has won four full Wales caps in addition to having played at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

Meanwhile, former Blue Connor Wickham has joined Leeds on loan from Sunderland.

Just read some other comments, why are people saying he's too short, people said that to Michael Owen when he was younger, you will be surprised how he doesn't get shoved off the ball, he's too quick for the bigger guys, there's more than one way to play football, he ran rings around the Finland midfield earlier last year, now if Bale has even said he is good and one to look out for, then im sure he's good enough for us :) sorry but I had to get that off my chest, how can you be too small for football it's not Basketball?

Sorry, but you seem a bit to sensitive/delicate to be playing with the insensitive kids in this playground.

"constant threat" is enough for me, certainly gives us a new option.
Doubt there would be a hoppe of making it permanent if he impresses though, even if Palace have more players than fans these days, massive squad

Found out about this earlier from a Palace season ticket holder mate who described him as their 'wonder-kid' and said he is EXTREMELY highly rated down there and one of the best prospects they've had in years. All good news i'd say !

I'm surprised by this as I half expected a loan involving Garvan but everything I've heard about this player is extremely positive and he has knees

I know he's had his fitness problems but I'd prefer it if Wordsworth was given a few games, otherwise what was the point in MM signing him in the first place.

Muhren..., I think PJ signed Woody didn't he? Anyway, MM obviously doesn't think he's good enough. This guy has really stood out for Palace whenever I've seen him. But maybe that's just because of his super hair!

He is a very good midfield player,Had a very good game the other night and cut our defence to threads, also scored a very good goal.He may not be tall but he IS better than what we have and could be an asset to the end of the season. The way our midfield is anything is worth a go.Lets hope we get him in tine for this Saturday.COYB

Lets start a campaign to get Marriott back and give him siome games @ dissboyitfc.
Not MMs style tho, seems to favour his older mates on the pitch.

Excited about this, my Palace season ticket holder friend tells me he is a very dangerous player, running at defences with pace. Its been a while since we have seen that! He is very popular up there.

Yes . best news I have read on this site for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time
Was at the 5-0 loss last season and he was out injured and I sat with him in the stands ( through a Palace mate)
He is very very highly thought of at Palace - probably has too much technical ability for the dog fight under TP and this is a great bit of loan business
Wow , if he had Didsy to supply that would be great but , as has been said maybe it could be the making of one of our other 'strikers' Good job MM

Yes he was the best player on the park against us last season Ashley Lewis .
Stearman wiped him out

Would be excited if this happened. As others have said he is a decent, tidy little player and is well thought of down at palace. Was playing well against us last season until stearman cleaned him out, real proper old fashioned challenge and at that point stemmed the tide, coz think they were on top. Weren't palace interested in didz?? Hope this isn't any sort of sweetner for the summer. Williams is contracted until 2018 so its not with a view to a perm and like others have said, how will he fit into micks system?? Time will tell

Yes an attacking midfielder rather than another workmanlike defensive plodder than town normally sign. In fact i'm a bit surprised by this one. Might be too late though. Five points off sixth place, Wigan, Blackburn, Leeds and Brighton all with a game in hand over Town. Top six still possible but all those teams have stronger squads than Town and their top striker isn't out injured until the end of the season. I think it is a big mistake not to at least try and get another striker in.

Umros... the reason many would welcome Wickham back is the fact he scored 8 goals in 11 games for a bottom of the table team in our league this season ? With our only regular scorer out for the remainder of the season it would have seemed a very good signing especially as he already knows the club and set up .

Don't know much about Williams but surely he has to be better than our options

Stated yesterday it was debatable whether we needed another loan signing with season petering out. But this guy has some quality, so great news.
