Wolves Put Stearman Talks on Hold
Tuesday, 18th Mar 2014 22:43

Boss Mick McCarthy may be interested to learn that Wolves have put talks with their out of contract senior players, including ex-Blues loanee Richard Stearman, on hold until they know what division they will be in next season.

Stearman, 26, spent the second half of last season on loan with the Blues but Town were priced out of a permanent deal in the summer. His Wolves deal is up at the end of June.

“I think for everybody who’s in contractual situations - barring any younger players beneath - we won’t do anything until we know what division we’re in,” Wolves boss Kenny Jackett told the Wolverhampton Express and Star.

“It’s something we’ll assess during the summer, but I’ve been very pleased with Richard and I see him as being part of the future. I think he’s done very well. I’ve picked him on a consistent basis and it’s been a good unit.”

Jackett says Stearman has done well during his table-topping side’s League One promotion push and believes his spell with Town last season benefited the right-back or centre-half.

“He’s had a very good season - both competitively and passing, as a centre-back he’s generally comfortable on the ball,” he added. “Out of the guys here for some years, he’s one of those who have stuck with us this season.

“Perhaps going on loan last season helped him and helped him come back fresh — maybe it made him appreciate what he’s got here and made him want to play here. But I’m very pleased with him. He’s formed an excellent partnership with Danny Batth.”

McCarthy, who was spotted at Charlton’s 1-0 home victory over AFC Bournemouth this evening, took Stearman to Molineux from Leicester in the summer of 2008.

Meanwhile, on-loan Freddie Veseli played the full 90 minutes as Bury lost 2-1 at Torquay in League Two this evening.

I think they already know what division they'll be playing in next season. (As do we)

Wolves will be promoted alright, but Stearman is coming to the end of a Premiership contract wages wise, so it will be intrresting to see what he'll be offered by Wolves in the summer. He has been quite a loss to us this season. Much as I like Chambers, he has struggled ar right back a number of times, especially against the top wingers who have gone at him. I know that Stears was also a centre half played out of his main position, but he had /has more of a natural ability to play right back & did better there for us. I think he is a quality defender/footballer & would be delighted if we saw him back as an Ipswich player come August.

Would be great to have him back, but if he does become available, I think his wages would be a stumbling point. He's coming of top wages, therefore whoever offers the best deal will get him. The MM and TC combination may tempt him, but at the end of the day it's all about money.

Just what is wrong with Richardson. He wants to stay and MM has stated he would like to keep him and he won't cost anything, makes sense to me.Just wish he would give him a game.

Did great for us on loan last season, but again he wasn't a recognised right back, he was a centre half playing out of position, but did a pretty good job. He also didnt really provide an attacking threat to pin back their full back. So in a way he was the same as chambers. I'd be interested to see if hewitt has come on since his loan, coz he is slightly more attacking, poss a wing back that could play in a 3 5 2 ??

Stearman is on a Premier league contract. He'll have to get real and accept a new contract on Championship terms at Wolves, or wherever because he's not going to be in the PL. Why would we want him? Do we need another centre half? Why would we want yet another out of position player at right back. We've not had a regular proper right back since David Wright. We have two decent right backs at the club - Hewitt out on loan, and Richardson loaned in but not played. Why?

Be very surprised if he came here at the end of the season. Theres no fee so a lot of clubs will be interested in him including Town but more often than not its the wages on offer which dictates where he will end up. Could see the likes of Palace or West Brom being interested if they are in the prem league next season.

What a very strange comment from a manager of a League One club...

Stearman will blatantly sign a new contract as soon as Wolves are up

Had a great stint with us last year but it wouldn't hurt to bring in a natural RB with an attacking threat to make up for the lack of inspiration in the middle of the park.

Stearman was great for us and any club at this level would benefit from having him in their squad. However, we need a proper right back not another makeshift (regardless of how good he was for us last season). Another center back is far from a priority since we signed Berra.

I would welcome Stearman back. He brought great balance to our defence last year and was a fundamental part of that great run of clean sheets. Stearman worked really well in tandem with Cresswell on the opposite flank - they had a very good understanding.

Agree with you HarryfromBath.

The difference between our defence in the second half of last season and the current set-up (which has conceded 42 goals already) is the loss of Stearman. He is a very underrated player who is more than capable of playing at RB or in the centre of defence. Let's hope he wants to play for MM again. Without flare up front or in the middle we simply MUST tighten up or defence.

Unless he takes a big cut we are out of the equation - we have NO money
Plus we play with two left sided centre backs and another one at Right back -
And while are discussing defence - we insist on playing two defensive midfielders most of the time and we still leak goals - many times by the midfield losing possesion in key areas or making crazy backward passes
We really have gifted teams goals this season and it is not all down to the defence
The irony is MM sends teams out 'not to lose ' and we still do - hang on , what if he sent a team out to go and win - Well done Sheff W last night and Yeovil for sticking it to two of the bigger teams - they went for it - Would love QPR to stay down ...

Great for us last year but we need a better footballer at right back to progress

Last year was about staying up (steraman good at right back in a solid defence) Next year should be about going up

Quite right truthhurts..we've got a cracking little prospect there in Hewitt, unfortunately we've got a dinosaur of a manager who prefers to play it safe.

If Burley was here Hewitt would be a first team regular by now.

Didn't see much quality last night, as he, and the Wolves were torn apart by Drury and Co

Good player, but do we need him? Centre half his referred position. We have plenty of cover their. Would like the wage budget spent on quick, creative midfield players.
