In The Hunt For First Town Goals
Saturday, 22nd Mar 2014 06:00

Stephen Hunt is not only anxious to break his Town scoring duck, but also add several more goals in the remaining weeks of the season.

The Republic of Ireland international is frustrated that he has so far failed to find the net in 14 appearances, five of them as a substitute, since arriving at Portman Road in November.

Hunt said: “My form has been okay and I thought I did okay in the last game against Wigan. But if anything is missing it’s obviously goals and I’m after a few.

“It’s been a little bit difficult as we’ve chopped and changed, switched formations and stuff like that. But I think I’ve played in something like seven of our last 10 games and I need to get into a real rhythm of playing, so hopefully I can crack on and put in some better performances with some goals thrown in.”

Hunt reflected on last week’s 3-1 home defeat by Wigan, which put a dent in Town’s play-off hopes, and admitted: “It was a setback, for sure. We’d have liked to build a bit of momentum with back-to-back wins but on the day it wasn’t to be.

“We got punished, I suppose, for not taking our chances. We could have taken a 2-1 lead but then they went and scored.

“Their first goal was a bit lucky because I closed down Emerson Boyce on the halfway line. He went wide then he hit the ball off my shin and went back inside, which kind of opened everything up. In the end it cost us, but they are obviously a team who have been winning a lot of games and when you’re in that form the luck generally seems to go your way.”

Now Hunt is hoping to end the campaign on a high and not be in the position he was in last summer following his departure from Wolves, out of contract and without a club.

He said: “I’ve learned from last summer in terms of what to expect and what it’s like, but I’m in a different situation because I haven’t been injured. I’ve been fit for most of the year.

“Hopefully I can get plenty of games in between now and the end of the season. The one thing about it is that I only came here in November so there should be no signs of fatigue, that’s for sure. I should be as fresh as a daisy.

“I just want to get some goals so I’ll be looking to get into the box a bit more. I’ve had one or two chances in the last few games but I need to keep getting in the right places at the right time. The only way that will improve is to work hard in training on that part of my game.”
