Premier League Clubs Eyeing Town Target McLean
Wednesday, 9th Apr 2014 23:39

Premier League Tottenham, Everton and Stoke are reported to have joined the Blues, Nottingham Forest, Leeds, Blackburn, Wigan, Rangers and Bolton in eyeing St Mirren midfielder Kenny McLean, whose contract is up at the end of the season.

Spurs and the Toffeemen are now leading the chase for the 22-year-old, according to the Scottish Sun.

Last month, Blues boss Mick McCarthy’s watched long-time target McLean in action for the Scotland U21s as they drew 2-2 with Hungary at Dundee United’s Tannadice.

McLean was initially linked with Town in January 2013 and again last summer.

Rutherglen-born McLean, who plays on the left or in the centre of midfield, started his senior career with his current club having been released by Rangers as a youngster, but spent time on loan at Arbroath in 2010.

If McLean moves to a club outside Scotland in the summer St Mirren would be entitled to compensation of around £350,000.

Well quite frankly we just can't compete with Spurs and Everton. That is if these rumors have any weight.

that's us well and truly out of the running then, we cant compete financially with some of the other teams mentioned in connection with him in the championship, let alone the premier league, would be very suprised if we pulled this off, but very impressed if we do

Why can't we compete? We can offer first team football at 22 he needs to be paying every week.
I personally think despite the "bigger clubs" we still have a good shout.

If I was a young lad moving a long way from home then I'd want to sign for a team where I'm going to be playing regular first team football rather than sat in the reserves at a team like Tottenham or Everton. I guess it's down to the individual and whether they'd just like to say they're a Premier League player or if they actually want to improve their game playing every week and work their way up. Hopefully it'll be the latter, as we could do with some energy in that area of the team.

I think it will depend on if any of Wigan, Forest, Blackburn or us get premoted to who he will join. Highly doubt a Spurs or Everton move is likely, due to no first team action. Come on Mick, you can can this.. We have a chance!!!

I am truly sorry to say this but this story is typical of Town today. We are a mid-table Second Division Club with an owner who hangs on to his money as tightly as a stone hangs onto its blood. If we did get into the Play-offs and if we did win then what would happen? Would we even do as well as Norwich have? Remember they were playing good football when they took their second successive promotion which they earned and deserved. What we need to do is get our own youngsters and start re-using OUR Academy. Please do not tell me all the young players who have been released from our Academy are no good because the League is littered with all our successful rejects starting with you know who! Yes we do need a first tier Academy (something we have always enjoyed) which needs to be working hand in hand with the First Team Manager and thereby producing a first team playing football in our own way. We are not going to buy success and should we stumble onto it we will probably catch the biggest cold of all time. I am sorry to be disheartening, particularly to the younger supporters, but surely we should step back and take a long hard look at ourselves, that is if you are a realist.
