Premier League Trio Eye Cresswell
Tuesday, 22nd Apr 2014 23:30

Scouts from Newcastle United, Southampton and West Brom were at Monday’s 2-2 home draw with AFC Bournemouth again running the rule over Blues left-back Aaron Cresswell.

The trio are amongst several Premier League clubs to have watched the 24-year-old in action on numerous occasions this season.

Fulham have also been regular visitors to Portman Road, while Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Cardiff, West Ham and Everton have all been linked at one time or another. Aston Villa made an enquiry in the summer of 2012.

Cresswell, who Mick McCarthy regards as the best left-back in the Championship, signed a new contract until the summer of 2017 in December having been linked with a move to the top flight during the last four transfer windows.

If Town were to finally cash in on one of their prize assets this summer, the Liverpudlian’s former club Tranmere Rovers would be entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues would make on the £420,000 they paid for him in the summer of 2011.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

In a dream world, Tottenham would come knocking with a £3m cash + Fryers offer. £1m to invest in yoth development and the rest to invest in a few decent first team players.

Bick Mick is desperate to sell him to get some spending money! Every opportunity he gets to play Cressers up hes doing it. 'best left back in the league' etc etc. Good for him as well!

I honesty believe that selling Cresswell would not harm our promotion chances next year as Mings has the potential to be just as good. What worries me more is keeping hold of MM & TC who have helped bring a degree of optimism to the club that I haven't known for several years.

Cardiff and Fulham are not safe in prem so not sure about them ?
West Ham could see or Palace
He was a great buy for Town and I would have liked to have seen him play LM in front of Mings
He made a couple of excellent last ditch tackles on Satday vs Watford
Unfort the only way we will have money is to sell
be keen to see who else ? I think Dids being injured is crap for us of late but may just mean he will stay
Agree about taylor SEB , Tabb
Need about 5 players - GK , LB , Creative Mid , Wide man and a Striker

Gutted to read this but not surprised. He has done so well every season since he joined from Tranmere. I wouldn't blame him for leaving, he does need to further his career, it's a shame though.

I wouldn't sell for anything less than 5 million. You look at other Championship players who have left for Premier League clubs in the past for huge amounts of money. Why wouldn't Cresswell be worth that? Just because he is a left back? He is the best in this league. He will be missed, people dont always appreciate the work he does. Fantastic player.

We don't need 'a few million to invest in some decent players'. We need to buy 1, maybe two, quality players. We've already got a 'decent' team, we need to take it to the next level, which no offence to either players but need to be the cut above Stephen Hunt or Jay Tabb (who in my opinion are a couple of 'decent' players who have been brought in recently).

It's the time of year when every manager is looking at his squad and trying to determine where and how improvements can be made. In the Prem clubs scour the world for quality players and are prepared to pay premium prices for them. Rarely though do Prem clubs pay premium prices for players in the Football League. Usually the lure of increased wages is enough for the targeted player to be 'turned' with the result that trying to keep the player becomes difficult if not impossible. Consequently FL players get absorbed into PL squads cheaply but ultimately remain squad players with few opportunities to play. In contrast FL players lucky enough to play in the Prem with a promoted team can thrive, play regularly, and enjoy the financial rewards commensurate with being a Prem League player. Aaron has long term contract with us at the moment and doesn't need to jump at offers from Prem League lesser lights just yet particularly as we could well be in with a shout ourselves this time next year if current progress is maintained.

But as we all know, money talks.

See Man U reported as planning to pay £30 million and £100k a week for the 18 year old Luke Shaw of Southampton. Is he really that much better a left back than Cresswell, even if he is playing in the Prem? Need to play hardball on the fee if he goes, we've been skinned far too often in the past.

In an ideal world would prefer to keep Cresswell. BUT as it looks increasingly likely we will be a championship club next year, we a) may need to sell in order to strengthen and b) can we really stand in his way if he wants premier league football? However, would require a large fee and would also expect ME to reinvest in squad.

Mings isn't good enough. In fact he's a liability

If he is sold ME will absorb the cash, lets hope he stays, a quality player.

........... a decent / good player - yes, without doubt - but, there are some good left backs around in the Championship and lower Divisions that could easily be his equal.

Plus - we have Mings anyway, excellent professional and highly competent player. So why worry ?

cleggo - ......... you are either a 'wind up merchant' 0R you don't know a player when you see one.

Either way - Bullsh*te Post.

Cresswell has earned a chance to play at a higher level so good luck to the lad!

I think Mings will be a good player but whether he is up to replacing Cresswell at the moment is open to question IMHO.

He will be missed big time. I think those thinking Mings can step in immediately and replace him satisfactorily are overrating Tyrone. He is still very raw

Cresswell is a good left back. Just that. For me he is not premier material. Would not be a permanent starter but a squad player.

Saying that if the club can get £5m for him I will drive the car!

MM has been bumming him up all season in the hope of selling him in the close season. Good bit of business if it works.

Mings is a good replacement and with regular starts will be a very good defender

As far as I am concerned we do no carry one player who would be a regular starter in the premiership - not even McGoldrick!!

DurhamTownFan and what sort of wages were they paid, not the peanuts on offer here.
Yes I think Cresswell will go this summer, but will the likes of Hewitt and co., get their chance to prove themselves.
Proper full backs, and centre halves not being played out of position and a midfield that can link up the play are must be priorities.
Players natually suited to these positions are worth more to the team than those forced to play out of position to give lomg term cover.

Saw this mentioned in the Sun this morning, quite funny in fact they has some bald fella as Cresswell (certainly wasn't him), can't expect too much from that rag they're only interested in the big money clubs!
Shame but I think it's a certainty he'll be off, hold the Prem clubs to ransom if they want him. Must keep McG though.

This is almost exactly like Kieron Dyer situation back in 1999. If he goes and the money is re-invested like it was back then it could be the making of us next season. Burley was able to put together the final pieces of his team with that money. If Mick was given the bulk of any transfer fee I'm sure he could do the same.

Who was that cretin who reckons Cresswell is better than Flanagan? I suppose you all realise that whatever money we get for Cresswell will go straight into Evans back pocket. Can anyone confirm that Felixstowe Town have made an offer for Hyam
