Finidi George again impressed in a central midfield role as Nigeria failed to beat hosts Mali, the game ending 0-0. The Town midfielder once more showed the combative side of his game and was again lucky to avoid a booking.

Nigeria will be disappointed not to have beaten the unfancied Malians who belied their minnow status and it wouldn't have been a surprise had they taken all three points from Finidi's boys.

There were few chances, although both teams can point to opportunities where they might have scored and also to poor refereeing decisions. Just before half-time Bassala Toure was spectacularly upended by Nigerian keeper Shorunma after getting beyond the Nigerian defence. Ghanaian referee Alex Quartey also refused Nigeria a clearcut second half penalty when Julius Aghahowa was tripped just inside the Mali area.

With seconds left on the clock Mali almost won it when Diarra's header was saved by Shorunma.
