Town and Charlton Linked With Koren
Friday, 23rd May 2014 09:44

Town and Charlton Athletic are reported to be chasing out-of-contract Hull City midfielder Robert Koren.

According to The Sun, the two clubs are fighting it out for 33-year-old Slovenian international Koren’s signature, Hull having told him he will not be offered new terms. Brighton and Millwall have previously been linked.

Koren, who is said to be keen to stay in England, started his career with Dravograd and Celje in his home country before moving on to Norwegian side Lillestrom in 2004.

Three years later 5ft 9in tall Koren joined West Brom before moving on to Hull City in the summer of 2010 on a free transfer.

While at the KC Stadium he made 133 starts and 18 sub appearances, scoring 29 goals, and latterly was club captain.

During 2013/14 his involvement was limited to 13 starts and 13 sub appearances and he scored three times.

Capped 61 times by Slovenia, scoring five goals, Koren skippered his country at the 2010 World Cup, starting all three of their games and netted the winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Algeria.

For every Bullard and Bowyer there is A Legwinski (Who I thought bossed the Midfield when we had him) and Campo. What we need is a bit of class and a reader of the game in the middle of the park. If we got Koren I think he would add versatility and experience to what is on the whole a young midfield. Ideal for Say WW to learn from too. If the wages are right sign him up. Those bleating about age, Giggs, Gerrard, Lampard, Kevin Phillips. Training has improved, the way (sensible) players look after themselves have changed and frankly the array of pysios, nutritionists and top medical advisors they have at their disposal means players have a longer career. Those of you playing sunday league would probably recover or play through the pain a bit easier with that kind of assistance and some cortisone injections.

No doubting he is a good player, but have bad memories of the last time we permanently signed an ageing player from Hull! Still, this guy has quality and attacking intent so if true, have faith in Mick.

I see that Hammers have just released Joe Cole. If he is fit and willing to take a (big) pay cut then he would be an excellent signing.

I understand that the President of Bolivia plays in midfield ...

Like the sound of Westwood. Doubt if we could afford the wages.

He's got quality but probably in the same boat as Hunt, if we could get him on a 1 year contact would be good, but not sure that would suit him.

In late May, not sure any of these type players will be signing anywhere anytime soon. Interesting range of comments, but a creative type midfielder like Koren could be a useful addition, and give us the attacking drive in the midfield which Williams gave us (to an extent). Agree I wouldn't be keen for him to take more than a 2 year deal in case it doesn't work out, but seeing how Kevin Phillips and other 'experienced' players have still proved useful in this league, I think he'd complement the type of midfielders we currently have well.

Release Hunt and Tabb and use their wages (please any savings from Carlos, Loach and Taylor once they go) on an old head (like Koren or others - he won't be the only out of contract player), Paul Green (thought he looked good in the last few weeks of the season) and a striker. Hopefully this year has convinced ME to free the purse strings a little. Personally think the main shopping list should be:

Striker to complement McGoldrick and Murph (if one gets injured, Nouble and Marriott are the main back up options, neither of which is proven at this level yet)
Right back - Chambers was a good fill in, but not sure Hewitt is yet quite up to it
Attacking midfielder - Tabb / Hunt / Wordsworth (to a lesser extent) didn't really give us the impetus we needed to push on from midfield last year.

Cant recall many,in fact any players Ipswich have signed who are over 30,that have gone on and been a great success here;but perhaps someone can remind me of one or two?

Unsure on this one if we get him. Hopefully I will be proven wrong if it does happen.

Seasider: Tony Mowbray (31 in 1995), Sylvain Legwinski, Matt Elliot (on loan 2004), Jim Magilton (30 in 1999), Mark Venus (30 in 1997), John Wark in 1987 and again in 1991, Geraint Williams (ish 1992).

Anyone else? Not that many but more than you think.

As long as he is fit Koren would be an excellent signing. Offers goals from midfield something we severely lack

Arm chair keyboard warrior, wannabe football managers are out in force again your opinions on players mean nothing
if MM signs a player then all the scouting and homework would have been done already thats good enough for me as a season ticket holder, these links mean nothing as town sign players under the rader these days dont believe everything you read. Blue moon - Funny, I actually fell asleep before the end of your post. If there was no exchange of comments, reaction to a rumour such as this, what an exciting world it would be.
