Chief Scout McCall Leaves Town
Tuesday, 1st Jul 2014 18:17

TWTD understands that chief scout Steve McCall has left the club after 13 years on the staff.

The 53-year-old’s role is understood to have no longer been required with Mick McCarthy bringing in long-time associates Dave Bowman and Ian ‘Taff’ Evans from Wolves to take on scouting duties soon after he took over as boss.

McCall was a member of Sir Bobby Robson’s 1981 UEFA Cup-winning side, having come through the Blues’ youth set-up in the late seventies.

The versatile England U21 international joined Sheffield Wednesday in 1987 and also featured for hometown club Carlisle on loan, Plymouth (twice), Torquay and Workington in a long playing career. He was briefly manager of the Pilgrims and had spells coaching at Home Park and with Torquay.

Following a spell scouting part-time for the Blues in the South-West, McCall returned to Town on a full-time basis in the summer of 2001, initially taking on a role as scouting co-ordinator under his former team-mate George Burley’s management.

He subsequently worked in various coaching and scouting roles before being appointed chief scout by Jim Magilton in 2006.

Good luck Steve. I've no idea how good a Chief Scout you are, but you were a cultured left sided footballer who never let the side down. In any team other than the best team in Europe at the time, you would have played many more times, but our regular left full back was Mick Mills and left midfield was Arnie Muhren. Say no more.

......... maybe, just maybe this Club needs to find a few more 'supporters' with a bit of ambition - rather than being 'happy and satisfied' with everything.

Otherwise, nothing other than the Championship - is ever going to be necessary or required.

You know who you are - and no doubt you will soon identify yourselves yet again.

....... as for you people who have questioned the lack of young players produced at this Club during the last '13 years' - you either suffer from selected memory, blinkered vision, or quite simply haven't clue what you are talking about, or indeed have no idea what goes on at the Club.
Possibly all - or a combination of the above.

I will save you the embarrassment of naming quite a few 'gems' that have gone on to better themselves within the game after being produced and nurtured at this Club - not to make the 1st Team agreed here.
But that hasn't made them failures.

I wonder if the new brigade (mm's men) will do likewise !!! - and be as successful - hopefully they will, starting very soon.

Blueboy and you have evidence the young players were scouted by Steve M have you? I think you will find many fans would love to have a team that is premiership bound then threatening to win the Premiership however they also look at other clubs and realise that we are more likely to be a decent championship team with ambition of reaching the premiership - not that it's a given right! These fans enjoy supporting their team, have a good old moan when we play badly or sign the odd donkey, but DONT moan at each and every move the club make. I simply could not live the miserable life that you seem to, finding negative in everything and everyone.

Disappointing that we're letting go someone who's been such a loyal servant to club for so many years, but that's tempered by the knowledge that McCarthy has brought in his own people. These are people who he already knows and trusts, people who know how he thinks and will understand exactly what he's looking for. Ultimately, all other footballing appointments should be made with one aim - to ensure the manager can do the best job he can. If that means we have to bid a sad farewell to Steve McCall, so be it.

bluelady .......... equally so, I couldn't live in 'cloud cuckoo land' like some of you do !!!!

Don't ignore the fact that many young, talented players have been produced during the mentioned time at this Club - to go onto better things elsewhere - the ostrich trait springs to mind of: head in the sand - is all you achieve by doing so.

Takes a bit more at a Club than that to NOT be an - also ran !!!!!
