Cresswell Fee Could Rise to £7m
Friday, 4th Jul 2014 00:03

Various sources close to West Ham are reporting that Town could ultimately receive £7 million for full-back Aaron Cresswell if all the top-ups included in the deal are triggered, with the Blues receiving an initial £3.75 million.

The further milestone top-ups are based on Premier League appearances for the Upton Park club, Cresswell having put pen to paper on a five-year deal this evening. The fee is officially undisclosed.

Cresswell's former club Tranmere Rovers are entitled to 20 per cent of the profit the Blues have made on the £420,000 they paid for him following his summer 2011 switch to Portman Road, a figure which could reach £1.32 million if the Blues receive the reported full £7 million from the Hammers.

A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses, with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

Cresswell, named in the Championship Team of Year for 2013/14, made 138 appearances for Town, all starts, scoring seven goals. He will join up with the West Ham squad for their training camp in France tomorrow.

This shows great progress. Signing good young players is so much easier with off-field stability, a respected management and coaching team, and a game-wide positive reputation. As well as a track record of bringing in and developing players to be ready for the next level.
I fully expect we'll play mostly in the free transfer and loan market - 4m brings in 4 players on 12k a week for 2 years (with Cressie's wages saved), which is pretty much what we need to upgrade to being contenders, if done well. Mick Mac is unlikely to go for the odd star signing and risk unbalancing the spirit in the squad, surely?

All in all it looks to be a great bit of business done by the club, a massive thanks to Cressy for his service too, Was the best left back in the championship and was very loyal to the club when he could've gone last summer but stated he wanted to get promoted with us. Really hope to see him in an England shirt one day, think West Ham will be a stop gap for him before he moves to a bigger club.

Now with the money, I sincerely hope Mick is given all the money from the sale to strengthen. I am happy with the back 4 and believe Mings can step up but has to be given time. The key area that has to be strengthened is central midfield. I don't believe we need a Jonny Williams type player, I believe we need a midfield general who can pick a pass and create opportunities for the strikers.

My number 1 target is Andy King from Leicester. Think he would cost 1 million and could be possible with Drinkwater and James ahead of him and will probably strengthen in that area. He is a good goal scoring midfielder, can pick a pass and is an Ipswich type player.

If not it has to be Adam Clayton from Huddersfield, was a stand out player when he played against us next season and would certainly be tempted to step up from Huddersfield, young with a bit of bite but also a leader, and can play a hell of a pass. Think he would cost around the same.

I'd spend the money left over on another winger, a right sided one at that, Anderson has done a job but can't beat a man, he may be a good crosser and works hard but I'd love to see us sign a young winger. Will be interesting to see who mick spends the money on and I'm sure he's looking forward to bringing the right players at the right cost.

If this is accurate information, this is a very good arrangement. Well done to all involved and very best wishes Cressy.

While on the subject of transfer fees etc., Phil do you know when we might expect to be receiving some of the extras for Connor Wickham...and is there a sell-on fee arrangement in place? Thanks.

PS Great news that Taylor is fit and raring to go...could be equivalent to a new signing if his attitude is right.

About time too that they have proper sale contracts after the Rhodes debacle, it's good to have decent sell-on clauses let's hope they get triggered.
