McCarthy Prepared to Wait on Loans
Friday, 18th Jul 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy is prepared to play a waiting game to see which promising Premier League youngsters become available for loan later in the summer.

McCarthy says he’ll set aside some of his summer budget for loans as and when they become available: “I want to keep our powder dry a little bit because there might be something come up that we can do and if we’ve done all our work and all our business and then we can’t do it, we’d be rueing the fact.”

He says Premier League managers will take their promising youngsters away on their pre-season tours with some of their star names taking a break after the World Cup and then make decisions on whether they want to send them out on loan later on down the line.

He added: “Players who have played in the World Cup will be getting a rest and, a bit like me with Freddie Veseli, I’ll use him now and then if I don’t need him then I’ll let him go out on loan. Likewise with anyone else where that might be the case.”

Harry 10 - money from Wickham and Walters sale didn't disappear ME puts in at least £5M a year it went to our upkeep.
Also youth development won't happen over night.

This will hurt some of you BECAUSE it is the TRUTH - we have become a LOAN and FREEBIE Club, like it or not.

Bit of a kick in the proverbials for some of you who had spent Cresswell's cash before we even got it - hey ?

The MD is clever - his words were 'the Cresswell money will be invested in the Club' - of course it would somewhere or other, but not in Players - as I knew, and predicted, much to the annoyance of some.

JWM is gradually switching on to what this Club is all about - more will follow as time passes !!

Whilst the first line of this post remains factual - it will be an ALMOST, if not TOTALLY impossible achievement to gain promotion to the Premiership. So dream on ALL.

........... some will always see our Club - as they would like it to be - not as it really is - therefore will always suffer from clouded vision, and not for changing !

Hopefully Mick will give youth a chance. Some say the U21s have a few promising lads.

It's interesting to compare two loans last season.

The first was Ryan Tunniciffe. He spent half a season with us, worked hard and did a decent job all round. Then he cleared off to Fulham. I don't blame him for that as it was a huge opportunity for him. The point is that we spent half a season bringing on another club's player at the expense of one of our own and got nothing for it.

The second is Johnny Williams who came in when our promotion push was fading, revitalised it and so nearly helped us over the line into the play offs. Then he went back to Palace leaving us with nothing to show for it.

I'm afraid that Williams is the exception that proves the rule. Too often loan players come in, block opportunities for our own youngsters and then clear off (or worse do well, sign permanently and then underperform).

I agree with JAS. We've lost Cresswell, several high salary (I presume) players and the only replacements are four frees and a couple of kids. I suspect that the money will go to service our debts.
