Murphy and Sammon in Ireland Squad
Thursday, 21st Aug 2014 11:17

Strikers Daryl Murphy and Conor Sammon have been named in a 36-man provisional Republic of Ireland squad for games against Oman and Georgia next month.

Ireland face Oman in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Wednesday 3rd September, then start their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with a match against Georgia in Tbilisi four days later.

Murphy, 31, was called back into the Ireland squad after almost six years last season and has now won 11 full caps without scoring, while 27-year-old Sammon, who joined the Blues on loan from Derby last week, has made nine international appearances, also without hitting the net.

There is no place in the squad for fellow frontman David McGoldrick, whose qualification for Ireland was confirmed earlier in the year and who is keen to play for Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane’s side.

There's also no recall for Stephen Hunt - who returned to action in Town's U21s on Tuesday after a calf injury - but former Blues Damien Delaney and Jon Walters are named.

Republic of Ireland: David Forde (Millwall), Keiren Westwood, (Sheffield Wednesday), Darren Randolph (Birmingham), Rob Elliot (Sunderland), Richard Keogh (Derby), Marc Wilson (Stoke), Seamus Coleman (Everton), John O'Shea (Sunderland), Alex Pearce, Stephen Kelly (both Reading), Paul McShane (Hull), Damien Delaney (Crystal Palace), Joey O'Brien (West Ham), Shane Duffy, James McCarthy (both Everton), Jeff Hendrick (Derby), Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa), Stephen Ward (Burnley), Glenn Whelan (Stoke), Darron Gibson (Everton), Andy Reid (Nottingham Forest), Aiden McGeady (Everton), Anthony Pilkington (Cardiff), James McClean (Wigan), Robbie Brady, Stephen Quinn, David Meyler (all Hull City), Wes Hoolahan (Norwich), Robbie Keane (Los Angeles Galaxy), Shane Long (Southampton), Daryl Murphy (Ipswich), Jon Walters (Stoke), Kevin Doyle (Wolves), Anthony Stokes (Celtic), Simon Cox (Reading), Conor Sammon (Ipswich).

Based on their previous fall-out, there must be some very interesting training & communication situations between John Walters and Roy Keane !

Sorry Mr O'Neill, you clearly know nothing about football either domestically or internationally. I trust the judgement of all the experts on this site who tell me that Connor Sammon is no good. He's nowhere near good enough for our championship side but you're giving him more international caps, please visit this site more frequently as you'll learn from some amazingly experienced football brains that may be able to help you.

36?! Are they playing a football match or going to war? Should we be worried?

What a scoring record Murphy and Sammon total of nil goals. And that was our starting strike partnership at Birmingham.

The absence of McGoldrick is perplexing ........ but a very "Irish" decision..........

after all we cannot risk being too successful can we ....... and a proven goal scorer might lead us in that direction .... does anyone wonder why the Irish are the butt of some much humour .........

The squad of 36 will be reduced as players withdraw due to injuries, grannies dying (Stephen Ireland's excuse) etc.

Strange McGoldrick has not been selected only a matter of time I guess
