Bishop Keeping His Feet on the Ground
Friday, 5th Sep 2014 08:49

Midfielder Teddy Bishop says he’s keeping his feet firmly on the ground, despite having made his full debut in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Derby. The 18-year-old, who made his first senior appearance as a sub in the Capital One Cup tie at Crawley, impressed before being replaced in the 67th minute.

“It was good to be involved at Derby and I felt I did OK," the first-year pro told the club site. "Once the first 20 minutes or so went by and I managed to get a few touches, I felt more at ease.

“Obviously Derby are a very good side but I thought we more than matched them and on another day we could have taken all three points.

“On a personal level it was fantastic to feature but it’s massively important that I keep my feet on the ground and I can’t go round thinking that I’ve made it.

“The hard work starts here and whilst it’s nice to have been involved in the first team, I know there is a long way to go yet and it’s up to me to keep progressing and try and show the manager what I can do.

“The manager and TC have been brilliant with me, as have all the lads and they have helped me and the younger lads such as Clarkey and Darren McQueen feel part of the group.”

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock wants to give Blues target Jonny Williams a chance to prove himself at Selhurst Park and isn’t keen on sending him out on loan, according to reports in South London.

Williams, who is understood to have been offered to Town on a half-season loan as part of Monday's proposed £2.5 million deal for Tyrone Mings, is pleased that Warnock has returned to the Eagles.

“I was 15 when the gaffer was last here, just getting a chance in and around the reserves,” Wales international Williams told the Croydon Advertiser.

“I remember speaking to him a few times as a kid, and that was big for me back then. He’s a hero to you at the age of 14-15 and it’s weird to have him back and be in the squad with him.

“We’ve had a few managers through the door in the last few years but the manager knows the place, know the people and that can only bring good things.”

Saw him at Crawley and impressed with his sowing against a strong Derby midfield, although slight in stature I really like the look of this lad and his professional attitude gives me hope that he can grow into a cracking little player for us

Oh dear Oh dear - a young prospect who can play football. Can pass the ball on the floor to another player in the same colour shirt. Has had a couple of decent performances. You know what comes next - he will hardly, if ever, be seen in a town shirt again because Skuse or Tabb or Hunt or some other favourite of MM will jump straight back in the team.
Please don't tell me 18 is too young - if you are good enough you are old enough and town have played 16 & 17 year olds in the top division with real success - see Burley, Dyer, Dozzle.

Hey Blue Goonie. Well he can thread a pass through the eye of a needle so you are not incorrect with your first statement!

Carsey - um isn't it MM who's given him his chance? Strange how some people twist facts on this site.

Can't offer any less to our midfield than the in-effective Skuse so throw him in I say.

If you don't give the kids a chance then they'll never get the experience..look at Raheem Sterling for example.

And no doubt he'll be sold on in the next couple of years anyhow so we may aswell play him whilst he's ours.

He has had two shots on target (both provoking good saves) which, by my reckoning, is about the same that Skuse has managed in all the games he has played. Teddy needs more match time and is a real prospect.

Well done Teddy, definitely worth a run in the team.

I havent seen Teddy play much (I guess not many of us have!), how is he physically, can he hold off challanges/tackles from opposition?

Have to agree with you Moscow Blue.

Let's face it, if ever there's a time to be a central midfielder coming through the youth ranks it's now. When your up against poor players like Skuse and Tabb for places in the team your bound to get a go. Give him a run of games alongside Hyam I say. Bring Bru in alongside them if we're playing 3 in the middle

I will put money he will not play when Skuse is fit to return , and only got his chance due to Skuse being unfit not some master management stroke , but some will see what they want to see

Brian_a_mul. He's very good under pressure, he is small in stature but he gets as stuck in as much as Hyam which makes up for it. Very good technically and brilliant work rate. Having seen him play against West Ham and Derby he could actually be our best midfielder, but the age and the lack of experience will sway mick to choosing Skuse ahead of him. Just think our midfield against derby was bru, bishop and Hyam. They dominated Derbys midfield which is arguably the best in the championship. Replace bru with McGoldrick in that attacking role then that could be a very good midfield.

Dozzells_Bobblehat - not sure how I managed to get 6 minus points when you seem to be the only opposition to my point which you seem to have missed completely.
Yes MM has given Bishop his chance but he will drop him as soon as one of his favourites is deemed fit enough rather than keep him in the team. We will then be left with Skuse or Tabb ...........
I hope I am wrong but on past experience I doubt it.

GerkensBeard, cheers. MM is looking for workrate and commitment in his players. This lad has that plus a bit of quality.
From what I have seen Bishop is not afraid to shoot from distance and is quite accurate from long range. He has a lot going for him at this early stage. If he nails a first team slot he could really kick on and develop.
One of the big positives from this type of player is that he gives us an attacking threat through the middle, potentially we can mix up attacks i.e. play wide, through the middle or long.

Good under pressure, small in stature very good technically.

Just a matter of time before McCarthy declares he is not his sort of player.

Carsey- you have minus six because three people agree with you and nine don't! I do understand the point you make, but mine is that MM is the one who has plucked him from being almost unheard of by most supporters to starting him at Derby and him being a stand out performer. Instead of people saying well done that was a good decision all you can do is slate him for something that hasn't yet happened.
It may happen and I would suggest he may need to be eased in but please look at the facts, the players to come into the first team squad this year are Hewitt, Henshall, Mings, Bishop and Sammon ( plus Stewart when fit). All pretty young except Sammon.

Dozzells_Bobblehat - And most if not all given a chance because of a small squad and injuries NOT as a result of a brilliant master plan.

This is my first posting but I have been reading online for some time.I first went to PR in
1954 at age 3 and apart from a year when Keane was there I have missed very few home games since 1960.I realise that the idea of this site is to express opinions but it seems to me that for some people ME and MM can do little right although for the immediate and forseeable future, those two gentlemen are the only opinions that really matter.Having said that MY opinion after Derby is that Bishop is a very good player in the making.

Dozzells_Bobblehat added 16:47 - Sep 5
Bluetone - Henshall, Mings and Stewart all MM signings, and he could have played Tabb in the middle against Derby and Henshall on the left.
I also forgot Bru, another young MM signing.

....... Bishop impressed without doubt - cardinal sin committed in showing 'flair' - probably means he will be loaned out before too long.

Being honest - even Bobblehat & Co 'should' agree with that. Or is that expecting too much ?

TimmyH added 21:15 - Sep 5
Bishop was purely in because Skuse was 'sick', good to see he played well - 67 minutes of solid football on a debut should not put a professional footballers head in the 'clouds' even if he is 18. Well done mate but I fear you might not get too many starts if Tabb, Skuse and Hyam all are fit.
