Hewitt Joins Colchester On Loan
Monday, 6th Oct 2014 16:23

Right-back Elliott Hewitt has joined Colchester United on a month’s loan. Manager Mick McCarthy recently outlined his intention to send the Wales U21 international out for a spell to get games with TWTD revealing that the U’s had shown interest in the former Macclesfield man earlier in the summer.

Hewitt started the season in the Town team, in a less familiar right midfield role, but his only involvement since the Reading match on August 16th was as a sub in the 2-0 home victory over Rotherham at the end of last month.

Colchester boss Tony Humes said: "We're pleased to have Elliott join up with us on loan.

"He's a good young player who will help us move forward in the next month."

Asked about the possibility of Hewitt going on loan last week, McCarthy said: “We might use the two-week international break so it wouldn’t affect us for a couple of weeks [if he went], we might only miss him for a few games.

“I’m having a look at that. I spoke to his agent, he rang me and suggested that. I’m cool with that, if we can do something but we’ll see.”

Hewitt, whose Town contract is up at the end of the season, will be with the League One side until November 2nd and could make his debut against his former loan club Gillingham in the Johnstone’s Paints Trophy at the Weston Homes Community Stadium on Tuesday.

Makes perfect sense seeing as we don't have a game for a fortnight anyway.

Thought he was immense in our opening game vs Fulham & is just unlucky that we've got Parr,Chambo & Anderson playing out of their skins at the moment...as I said last week he's definately one for the future and needs tying down to a new contract.

think this is a good idea. but with the players playing like they are at the moment he won't be getting a sniff at the starting 11. I do think that he will go on to be a very accomplished player at this level if not higher though, so would therefore tie him down to a long term contract. surely he can't be on very high wages. Send him out on loan again in January as well. Then next year he might come back and be challenging to make right back his own.

Less colourful of the full backs joined during PJ's rein - guess you'd settle for a nice profit on one of them! Can't win them all but can't help feeling that he might have a little in the locker given an extended run in a Colchester side run by a decent former Tractor Boy. Go make yourself a player Mr Hewitt!

Give this lad a new contract. I think he's got excellent potential and as mentioned above, I think he's just unfortunate he has such good players ahead of him!

Excellent decision. As discussed, unfortunate for him as he is perfectly capable of playing at championship level, just the quality in our side pushing him away. Hopefully he makes a real impact at Colchester

Makes perfect sense to get him out on a short loan. He really impressed me each time I've seen him play, he is just unfortunate that the players ahead of him are performing so well so far this season.

I like the idea of sending players out on loan to better themselves and get games. Colchester is a decent level as well. Will do him good.

However, I am concerned with the lack of defensive options, if we pick up an injury or suspensions. Mings and Berra are both one booking away from a suspension and although we have Smith to come in if needed, who else with experience at this level do we have?

Agree with all of the above. When it was first mentioned last week I thought it better that he stay here as cover especially with Mings one booking away from suspension but letting him go for a month makes sense.Hopefully a new contract will be offered to him because he looks like he has a big future.

Good move with hopefully a recall clause in case of suspensios at full back

Re: cover for suspensions, chambers is a much better full back than Hewitt. Parr can play left or right, smith & the young lad ( who's name escapes me ) in the middle. He's only gone for a month!
