Marriott Close to Colchester Switch
Monday, 19th Jan 2015 10:07

TWTD understands that Town and Colchester are close to completing a deal which would see striker Jack Marriott join the U’s on loan.

Marriott, 20, would effectively be Colchester’s replacement for striker Freddie Sears, who moved to the Blues on Friday and made an impressive debut as a sub at Millwall on Saturday.

The Beverley-born striker is currently on loan at Vanarama Conference side Woking, where he has spent much of the last two seasons. That deal was due to run until April 25th.

Marriott, whose Town contract is up at the end of the season, spent a short spell with League One Gillingham last season and in League Two with Carlisle earlier this campaign.

Interesting, presumably if he does well we'll offer him a new deal. If not, he'll be able to sign for them on a free.

Brilliant, delighted for Jack if this works out.
A real step up in level and he has a genuine chance to get games with Freddie moving to us.

I feel this could make him, he has the abilities to do well at this level. Pace, control and finishing skills. I really believe with a better quality of players around him to make the chances, he will put them away!

If he doesn't do well, why would Colchester want to sign him on a free?

Marcus_Evans I was referring to the compensation we would be due if Colchester want to sign him permanently (he's under 21) and we've offered him a contract.

Doing "well" is subjective, what I was getting at is that he could do well enough for them to want him, but not well enough for us to think he's worth retaining (or trying to get a compensation fee for).

This is without a doubt, a move that could make or break Marriotts career at ipswich, finally a shot at what is considered a good level. If he can score goals down in league 1 then we know that he'd get goals in this league too (like Mcgoldrick, austin, wilson etc.) I really hope he does well, i'm sure he can see himself how big this move is, good luck Jack!

I'm pretty sure you will find that this is in effect a free transfer, basically a swap deal and that if Col U want him next season they can have him at their option as part of the Sears deal.

I think flashblue is right, Marriot is an unknown quantity at that level so Colchester are reluctant to give him a longer contract till they have a look at him. We get Sears and they get to take a look at Marriot and we pay part of his wages into the bargain. If everyone is happy he makes it a permanent switch in the summer. That's how I read it.
