Town Favourites to Sign Varney
Wednesday, 18th Feb 2015 20:33

Town are understood to be the favourites to sign out-of-favour Blackburn Rovers striker Luke Varney on an emergency loan.

With Noel Hunt having picked up a knee injury which is set to sideline him for at least a few games - although Town are yet confirm the precise length of his expected absence - and David McGoldrick having been out with a thigh problem, the Blues are short of fit strikers going into the back to back home games against Reading and Birmingham.

Varney, who was initially mentioned in connection with a move to Town earlier in the week, is certain to leave Ewood Park and was close to a move to Millwall prior to the transfer window closing.

Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday also understood to have shown interest but Town are understood to have won the race.

The 32-year-old started his career with Crewe and has subsequently had spells with Charlton, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackpool, Portsmouth and Leeds before joining Rovers in the summer following a loan at the end of last season.

The Leicester-born 5ft 11in tall striker has made only one start - in the Capital One Cup in August - and 13 sub appearances during 2014/15.

Not going to write off Carney before he has kicked a ball for the club, if indeed it goes ahead. We learnt that much with Hunty's 95th min winner against charlton. Bearing in mind we were linked with Murray as well I would say that's really the signing we should be going all out to make. He scores goals and would potentially help us go up automatically. Without Murphy, where do the goals come from??

is Varney better than what we have? Don't think so...

Some reasoned comments on here ( Warblersdick aside)
Agree - would prefer Murray BUT I have not seen much of Varney and if he can contribute like N Hunt all the better
As I have said before and has been posted above - The £10k we are throwing at Taylor a week sticks in my throat . That would be ideal for a Wood ( if he was fit) or a Murray
Unfort JW is still not fit so doubt we will be going for him just yet
I think we will though when he is fit and he could be the lift we need

Oh, you lot can be dull sometimes.
Bru, McGoldrick, Murphy (permanently but more importantly put as a striker), Berra, Chambers as captain a masterstroke, Bishop given the opportunity to play, Parr, Noel Hunt, Skuse, Sears, Bialkowski ...
Just some of Mick's acquisitions/brilliant decisions.
I think I'll trust Mick on this one to, cheers.

Surely there has to be a better striker out there available on loan until the end of the season?...Sammon, Chaplow, Varney as well as a few other names which are not exactly mouth watering additions, how come Derby and Boro can get these players and we can't other than Jonny Williams. Would be a very welcome boost to the squad to add at least a quality player!

I think what some need to realize is that the strikers we have at the club are so good that no really good striker is prepared to come here and risk of sitting on the bench. And no manager in the Premiership is interested for that to happen to a young striker of theirs. We are only looking for a back-up. RaymondovicBlue was spot on. And as warktheline said: ”no big deal, if he produces, then great, if not he'll be moved on.” People have been crying out for the lack of back-up among strikers, especially for Murphy. Now they complain.
Would be expensive too trying to bring in a highly paid striker from the Premiership, pay a large sum of his wages - probably more than the 10 000 Taylor costs us - and not being sure if he would play. And not knowing how it would affect the teamspirit. "Roleacceptance" and "humble" are the keywords.
As for Jack Marriot, he is better off playing games for Colchester, than being back up to McGoldrick, Sears and Hunt. I can't see anytone thinking Jack is back-up to Murphy.
And the further away from the squad Paul Taylor is, the better. Could even be worth 10 000 a week to keep him away.

Not sure why people are banging on about Taylor. He's no longer a Town player, as we have paid up his contract and us effectively a free agent. The fact that his agent cant find him another Club speaks volumes.

Marriot hadnt been able to push on at the higher level, indicating that a 1st team appearance fof Town are increasingly unlikely.

Im more interested in these 2 Irish lads that have been brought in. Connolly was on the bench at Fulham and I think we will soon see him on the pitch. He's VERY quick by all accounts. The other, is very young, but a revelation in the waiting. Times ahead are good. Any players like Varney or Chaplow brought in are only short term bench warmers to get us to the end of the season.

Need to find a more quality striker must be someone out there who wants to play first team football need to show fans more ambition i am beginning to question if we really want to go up this season, not as badly as Derby all we worry about is FFP no one else does.Lets try and get Wood from Leicester.

OK----lets stay positive here-----this guy was great at Crewe many years ago and I really fancied him then, good at free kicks if I remember.

If he is desperate to play and prove a point etc we could both benefit from this short term loan and if anybody can get him playing it is Mick and TC.

How long is didds out for---all seems quiet on this?

Taylor is still a Town player. Nobody wants him to play, it's just that we could do with getting rid of his huge wage packet.

3 points made earlier:-
guentchev-Bajner was a free transfer effectively to Notts County in the window.

Lightningboy-EADT wonder whether he can come back as already been here this season, although went back early through injury which believe is still troubling him.

Paulthebluealien-Luke Chambers was a Paul Jewell signing.(9July 2012)

Certainly isn't in the Benty class but think ME missed the chance to strengthen in Jan transfer window, just replacing Hunt who replaced Sammon.

Would still like to see Jonny back if possible.

@seasider, think all would like to have JW back...in the same side as Bishop.

Wish people would stop banging on about Bent and Ince for Derby. Two very good signings neither of which we can actually afford to pay wages for. Reality is that if we are to sign any real quality players, especially in January, we'll be paying over the odds - something which ME rightly isnt prepared to do with the clubs current finances. Only regret is that we didn't go for a young prem player - i.e nick powell, but then again most prem teams are looking to offload their wages when they loan these players out.

Jonny Williams would 100% be back here if it was possible for MM to sign him.

Varney admittedly isnt top quality, but you can't expect much from an emergency loan. Personally dont think we'll see much of him anyway but MM cant afford to have no back up with some very tricky and important fixtures coming up.

Two very winnable home games coming up before a big month of games against teams in and around us, COYB
