Varney Expected to Sign Ahead of Reading Clash
Thursday, 19th Feb 2015 13:44

Town expect to complete the loan signing of Blackburn striker Luke Varney in time to go into the squad facing Reading at Portman Road on Saturday, we understand.

The Blues are short of strikers with Noel Hunt having picked up a knee injury which is set to sideline him for at least a few games - although Town are still to confirm the length of his absence - and with David McGoldrick having missed the last two matches with a thigh problem.

Football League clubs can sign players on loans of up to 93 days with a deal done this weekend meaning a loanee could stay until the Championship play-off final on Monday 25th May.

Varney, who was initially mentioned in connection with a move to Town earlier in the week, is out of favour at Ewood Park and was close to a move to Millwall prior to the transfer window closing. Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday also understood to have shown interest.

The 32-year-old started his career with Crewe and has subsequently had spells with Charlton, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackpool, Portsmouth and Leeds before joining Rovers in the summer following a loan at the end of last season.

The Leicester-born 5ft 11in tall striker has made only one start - in the Capital One Cup in August - and 13 sub appearances during 2014/15.

Meanwhile, Reading will have Michael Hector back at the centre of their defence on Saturday, the 22-year-old having recovered from a leg injury.

Remember Varney scoring for Leeds in a 2-1 win against us in 2013. Found the 'highlights' and their team also featured Noel Hunt and Paddy Kenny (and Paul Green). Ipswich team very similar to now, just with a couple of key players brought in which shows how well Mick has moulded them into a proper unit.

I'm sorry, but is this really the best we can get. Our owner needs to back his manager (the best we have had in years) or we stay where we are forever. I for one do not fall for this fair play rules rubbish. Doesn't worry Bournmouth, Watford or Brentford with crowds of 1 man and a dog. We need quality at this stage not journey men.

We get linked with Glenn Murray and then end up with Luke Varney. His goal record isn't exactly anything to write home about. I rarely write anything negative on here but why does it always feel like we're shopping in Pound Land when our competitors are off shopping at John Lewis? In Mick we trust I suppose, to be fair to him he's rarely been wrong with the quality of his signings

Nothing like making the guy feel welcome. Get off his case and give him a chance. Welcome to Ipswich Luke.

Give the player a chance ffs. I remember disparaging remarks about N.Hunt, he scored 3 goals and suddenly people loved him. Trust Mick.

Looks like that sounds the death knell for Jack Marriott at Ipswich - the usual Ipswich pholosophy borne under Sir Bobby was that you never know with young players unless you give them a chance to perform at the higher level and there is a similar example with Brian Talbot back in 1974 who was constantly being shipped out and Ipswich were about to let him go until Sir Bobby had a hunch and played...and the rest as they say is history. Given our circumstances, surely MM could have given him a chance rather than get another Connor Sammon type player looking for a last pay cheque. And we are supposed to bringing our young players through in order to acquire Academy One status.

I agree, for gods sake get off his case - poor sod hasnt even signed yet!
And Jack Marriott is no where near good enough for the championship, thats why he's not playing for us.

Oh no no no what the hell must have been one of the last in the barrel it would have been much better giving one of our own a chance just hope he stays on the bench or better still in the stand might as well kept Sammon.

We were wrong to write off Noel Hunt before he kicked a ball for town, so would be wrong to write off Varney, only issue people have and I completely agree with, is that we were linked with Glenn Murray, who really would have been a decent addition and we then end up with Varney instead. Now Murray or Varney?? I know who I'd rather have, but Mick knows what he's doing I guess

As he is only being signed as cover, instead couldn't we use Tommy Smith as cover for Murphy just like Brian Clough used Kenny Burns with great success for Forest. Then Parr could also get a game at RB!
He is good enough in the air for Freddie to feed off & give defenders big problems, plus he has a decent shot.

I've just been on the "Hottest Transfer Rumours of the Week" website and there was no hint of this move. How did their news-hounds let this one slip under the radar?

What players we'd all like, to what players we can get, are, I'm afraid poles apart.
Some of the comments on Varney are rather harsh. Mick and TC obviously need to bolster squad, and will do so, in accordance with club's framework. We are entering a very tough run of matches, after our next two homes, and who knows, Varney may contribute with one or two vital goals, or assists.
Personally, I think we should be getting behind the lad, instead hitting him with pelters. Think if he gains fitness, he may surprise one or two on forum.

I share the disappointment with others and cant understand why we aim so low. I'll be interested to hear from MM on why LV before making any final judgement. If I was asking I'd want to know about cover for Murph! As has been said we badly need McGoldrick fit and back to his best

Glenn Murray is not going to come and warm the bench here, would he play ahead of Murph if he came? No. Would you play him and Murph together? No they are too similar so if he came, unless Mirp got injured we would nit start and would be a sub.

He can be a sub at Palace so why be one here, that goes for many prem youngsters. Their clubs are not going to let players come if they are going to warm the bench because they wont develop.

As before it really isnt as simple as some make out.

All I am saying is give him a chance
