McCarthy Could Still Add to Squad
Wednesday, 4th Mar 2015 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy could still add further emergency loanees to his squad before the deadline on Thursday 26th March.

“Possibly. If there is somebody who is out there we could do that is going to really enhance it, but if there isn’t that person around, then no, we won’t,” McCarthy said.

“In fairness, we’ve got four good strikers and Didzy coming back. Didzy will probably be looking at the Middlesbrough game.

“He’s hoping to get back in training quickly, but whether he can get enough training into him to have him involved, who knows. It might be after the international break.

"We’ve got midfield players and if Bish is fit we’re suddenly not in bad shape again.”

He says the Blues have missed McGoldrick while he has been out with a thigh problem: “We can’t underestimate the effect he’s had on the team. For the last two years he’s been terrific, so we’d love to have him back.”

But he says the desire to increase his options doesn’t mean he’s dissatisfied with the players already at his disposal.

“I’ve always been happy with my squad,” he insisted. “Trying to add to it doesn’t mean I’m unhappy with it.

“Adding to it means I’m trying to improve it, if I possibly can. And that’s the same for the players as well. Sometimes players’ positions are at threat but that insecurity makes you work harder I find.

“And the players, they all want to play with good players, and sometimes fresh players. We’ve had a shift out of my lot for 34 games. It just brings a breath of fresh air into the club and into the team. It’s always good to have fresh legs, and if they’re good players, better still.”

McCarthy was pleased with recent loan additions Chris Wood and Luke Varney, who both came off the bench at Norwich.

“Chris has looked very good, excellent,” McCarthy continued. “And, although he only had 10 minutes, I thought he [did well on Sunday].

“I thought Reg was different class when he went on, he was a proper handful. I’m really pleased with them.”

He says Wood is ready to start games despite having been out with an injury prior to joining the Blues: “He’s good to go. He’s a proper player. If we were going out to sign Chris Wood then we’d be having to pay, what, £3 million, £4 million, £5 million for him?

“That’s the kind of dough he was commanding. He’s a really good player. He had an ankle knock, he was out for a couple of weeks, but he’s been playing and training during the rest of the season. He’s good to go.”

OK so I'm not a football manager so I admit Mick knows more than I do... BUT...

Is it just me or was Chaplow totally ineffective on Sunday.... And Varney didn't APPEARS to be much better??

Why did Milk get so frustrated at his long it took to sign Connolly, then "bigged him up so much as a match winner" and then not even put him the bench in a game we "needed" to win???

I've never seen him play.... Just going on the extraordinarily positive words muck used on here.... Thought he was bussing a gut to play him????

We all know Johnny W cannot come back this year.... But please Mick.... Give us some peace and flair on match day.

If you're going to lose 0-2, at least can we do it whilst trying to Batter their defence?!?

Varney different class!! Is Mick totally losing it? Improve midfield if anyone better. Should not be hard Mick - not one of them has scored more than 1 goal all season. We should be bringing someone in now.

In one breath "Didzy is probably looking at the Middlesbrough game" (14th March) and in the next, "it might be after the international break" (3rd April) i.e. after Bolton and Watford. This after he was due back a fornight ago. I will be happy if we see him again this season.

IT is no good getting anybody else in MM. because you will still keep playing your favourites ????

Should have strengthened in January like many of us said we may struggle to even achieve playoffs now. We dropped a lot of points against teams that will struggle to stay up Wigan, Rotherham , Reading, Brighton , Bolton that is the games that have cost us not losing to probably the best squad in the league on the best form away against the scum .
We looked tired and short of ideas against Saints and Derby but MM said he was happy and confident that his team would compete so you are judged by your statements and results

January was the time to do our business. Half season loans. Players bedded in and playing long before now. Players to cover for injuries. We still lack a Williams type midfield player and a winger.

Let's think where we need a player? If Bishop is back put him and Bru together. Parr right back, Chambo CB. Connolly right wing (or Anderson if not). Sears and Murph up top. Left? Erm!!!
