Noel Hunt: Stephen Stopped Me Hitting Abusive Fan
Wednesday, 20th May 2015 20:01

Striker Noel Hunt has admitted that he came close to hitting an abusive Norwich supporter during the pitch invasion which followed the final whistle after the Blues’ play-off defeat at Carrow Road on Saturday. The 32-year-old says he was dragged away at the vital moment by his brother Stephen.

Writing in his column for BeanBagSports, Hunt, who came off the bench late on in the game, said a fan who had been throwing abuse at him while he was warming up approached him on the pitch after the match: “As I walked across to applaud our fans I could hear him on the pitch shouting behind me. I thought, just give me one chance. I then thought, no, leave it.

“I walked over to our fans who have been superb throughout the season. We owed it to the fans to applaud them and I threw my shirt into them.

“As I turned around, that guy was there. He was wanting to square up to me and I thought right, just hit him, just hit him as hard as you can.

“As I go to flinch, a hand grabs me. It’s Stephen. He says just leave it. I don’t even know where he came from. That would have been the worst thing I could have ever done. Stephen stopping me was the right thing to do.”

Reflecting on the Blues’ play-off defeat, Hunt, who along with his brother is yet to be offered new terms by Town, added: “I’ve just felt empty since the final whistle and still do.

"This club for me ticks all the boxes as did Reading, it’s something that doesn't come around that often so when it does you need to take full advantage of.

“I will have a break for a few weeks and see what options are around. Hopefully I'll see the boys again, if not it will be onto the next chapter!”

Outstanding hunty. I think you and your brother deserve another year. We have taken to you like you have taken to us. Next year is our year, COYB.

Pity that Stephen stopped him.

I'm old enough to remember derbies against that lot up the road going back to the seventies. Even during the eighties the first tackle would be heavy, a booking, followed by a mass brawl between the players. Needless to say, the atmosphere was more than electric.

Noel Hunt was one of the most underwhelming signings of the season, Who would've thought we'd love him as much as we do! Whoever he plays for in the future, I wish him all the success possible. His passion for this club since being here has been a breath of fresh air. I would've loved to see him deck a budgie though!

That pitch invasion will provide a massive motivation for the coming season, especially if Boro put one over the Budgies next week.

On one post-match video posted online by a fan who had encroached on the pitch, there was a section where Mick was standing unmoved and near the dugouts and on the pitch, looking incredulously at a Budgie giving it large to him, as it were.

Let's see what happens on Monday and lets see what happens to Norwich's squad if they screw up. Mick and the squad had an useful insight into the unique mentality of the Budgies and they won't forget those post-match scenes in a hurry.

........ it's bandit country down that end of the A140 Noel, even Delia in her 'heart of hearts' would much prefer to be BLUE I'm sure.

Nice one Hunt Bros' - you both dealt with the situation well.

In our 'heart of hearts' I'm sure most of us wouldn't mind seeing you both have another season with us as squad members - the rest would be in your hands !!

Sorry guys, but for me it will be a massive backwards step if we see you at the club again. It would mean we failed secure our main targets. We need to move forward not backwards. I wish both well though.

Looked more like somebody opened the doors at Bedlam than a pitch invasion.

That video was Brilliant, highlighted how crap their pitch invasion was and caught the moment hunt nearly cracked hin one. But for me the best bit was Andy Liddle, telling the guy to Foxtrot Oscar and wagging his thumb!! Great to see. Real siege mentality at the club.

They beat us fair and square you think they would have been happy with that. Really hope players from both sides are afforded more protection in the future.

Surely a formal complaint is going to be made? Granted difficult to keep feral imbeciles under control, but they would have no second thoughts about complaining if their players were approached by Ipswich fans, as proven in the past.

The whole lot of them are idiots and the policing of local derby games by Norfolk Constabulary is and has been appalling for years.
They could and should have kept the idiots off the pitch and hopefully the league will fine the club. The potential for someone kicking off or one of the town players getting a smack was obvious.
I haven't seen supporters on the pitch at Portman Road for years and when I pointed this out to one of the coppers on duty at the game all he said was "you haven't won anything to get excited about". Well nor have Norwich yet and hopefully Middlesbrough will spank them at Wembley.

I actually think Noel is the more likely out of him, his brother or Ando to get invited back. Noel can play very much as a winger and I would like to see him back in the squad, I think he can do a very good job for us, the stats don't make good reading for Ando or Stephen BUT just take a moment to look at Noel's (NH)

apps subs total goals
NH 4 6 10 3
SH 12 8 20 0
PA 21 16 37 2

Stephen's a great player too, he'll give it all. It must count for something having them here together, in terms of spirit, 'n all.

Horrible lot ,still watch them go to bits vs boro , then see what next season brings. You cannot wish their team well when they are clearly deranged , their team is decent ,some decent lads etc ,but those fans on the pitch stirring for a scrap are plain stupid ,ugly and offensive.

If he had of hit him it would have created headlines, put him in the news and there would be a police enquiry etc.

He would also never have to pay for a pint in Suffolk again.

Yeah pity he didn't deck him. Wish Prince Charles had stuck one on Gerry Adams too
