Saturday, 30th May 2015 09:54

Academy scholar Monty Patterson came on as a 73rd minute sub as hosts New Zealand opened their FIFA U20 World Cup group campaign with a 0-0 draw against Ukraine in Auckland earlier this morning.

New Zealand face the USA in their second group match on Tuesday, also in Auckland, and finally Myanmar in Wellington next Friday.

Meanwhile, Town trio Adam McDonnell, Cemal Ramadan and Shane McLoughlin are set to join up with the Irish U18s for a training camp today ahead of next week’s friendlies in Luxembourg.

New Zealand U20s: Sail, Edge, Wynne, Brotherton, Mitchell, Tuiloma (Hudson-Wihongi 81), Stevens (Patterson 73), Dyer, Rufer (Billingsley 64), Lewis, Ridenton.

Monty should have started. After a sharp piece of work straight after he came on the commentator was comparing his work with Zidane. It was a game that either side could have won with sharper finishing but, encouragingly, we had the 3 best chances late in the game.

Agree KiwiBlue2 - liked what I saw of Monty and I hope he does start the next group games - either wide or more attacking centrally. Draw was a fair result but oh that Brotherton header at the death!
