Blues Linked With McShane
Sunday, 31st May 2015 09:30

Town boss Mick McCarthy is keen on signing released Hull City defender Paul McShane, according a number of this morning’s tabloids.

McShane, 29, left the Tigers following last week's relegation from the Premier League and McCarthy is claimed to view him as someone who could come in at right-back to allow skipper Luke Chambers to move to the centre of the defence.

Capped 31 times by Ireland, McShane joined Manchester United as a youngster and was part of the side which won the FA Youth Cup in 2002/03 but left Old Trafford without making a senior appearance.

Having spent time on loan at Walsall and Brighton, the Kilpedder-born full-back or centre-half moved on to West Brom in 2006 and then Roy Keane’s Sunderland a year later for an initial £1.5 million fee.

The 5ft 11in tall defender joined Hull on loan in the summer of 2008 and made the move permanent a year later, subsequently spending time on loan at Barnsley and Crystal Palace. McShane made 119 starts and 17 sub appearances for the Tigers, scoring five goals.

Meanwhile, Bolton’s Darren Pratley continues to be linked with the Blues, reportedly as an alternative to former Leeds midfielder Rodolph Austin, Town having been put off by the Jamaican’s wage expectations. The 29-year-old was linked with Town in February.

Elsewhere, ex-Town skipper and coach Tony Mowbray is set to add his one-time Blues team-mates Mark Venus and Jamie Clapham to his Coventry staff.

Venus, who take on a role as technical director overseeing player recruitment, previously worked with Mowbray at West Brom, Hibernian, Celtic and Middlesbrough as his assistant, while Clapham was on the Boro staff, coaching the U21s.

As I've said before, Mick doesn't like attacking full backs. He plays big strong lads there - ask any Wolves fan. I don't mind that if they can actually pass and attack but sadly this often isn't the case. Problem is this then puts pressure on wingers who have to cover for FB's inadequacies (ie focus on defence more than attack) and subsequently strikers end up having to feed off scraps and work their socks off. Sound familiar? It'll work to a point but against increasing numbers of more tactically advanced rival coaches in the Championship and Prem, it's becoming less and less likely.

Saying that, I'd take him as we definitely need more depth in defence.

Not convinced by this. If we want a right back, shouldn't we sign a natural right back? Rudolph Austin would not be a good signing. Is that seriously the best we can do! Appreciate it's all rumour, but he is no better than we already have. We need players who improve the team. Neither do in my opinion.

I gave up watching a very boring Premier League a few years back. But my memory of Paul McShane is that he is the worst player in its history. If this is true I hope he has improved dramatically since then.

McShane would be a good addition but I agree that we need a natural right back; a younger player who will show hunger such as Mings has down the left this season. I like Parr in midfield personally, he provides good cover for the defenders in addition to getting forward well and helping the attack. Rudolph Austin was also mentioned, I'd see him as a good signing; a powerhouse in the middle who can hit some rasping shots!

I'll have confidence in whoever we sign as Mick and Terry seem to have a habit of getting the best out of players who at first may have not seemed a good signing. Coyb!

Seems to fit the McCarthy mould as a signing as could play in multiple positions but is that what we need?

Would much rather have a right back who play's right back.

He really does look like a ginger Ted Danson!

Although it was mentioned in the article that he could replace chambers at RB doesn't mean he would, and he might have parr or someone else on the right, might even be for a formation switch to play 3 CB's or that maybe one of ours is ready to leave this untll resolved doesn't answer anything as the press like pose more questions. ill I say until we get a team together lets leave the speculation to the press as most of their work is done on social media, just a question who has spoke to mick, mcshane, or anyone who might matter other than to line their pockets I say wait and see

Has Mick just realized Chambers is no right back if so nor is Mcshane please tell him someone before the season starts Parr is a right back and has done a good job when filling in there lets start off the season playing round pegs in round holes,we need replacements in midfield someone who can take a decent freekick and corner would help instead of Tabbys useless efforts.

Guess who the two players are ?

Player A age 29-33.
Released by his club / not offered a new contract.
Played for several clubs, mostly on loan.
Premiership experience / previously capped for Ireland.
5'11" - 6'2"
Can play anywhere in the back line & good work rate.

Player B age 20-23
Has turned down new contract offered to him.
Been with his club since coming through their youth system.
Voted player of the season/most promising player.
Keen to play football at a higher level
5'8"-5'10"creative attacking midfielder

....................I know not many clues.
But Player B is not someone who will be signing for us.

Swindons Nathan Byrne is a good shout! I work at Swindon FC and have seen him play all season. He is definitely one of the best attacking right backs in that division......not sure if he would be good enough for the championship tho

@battyblue

Except Parr is a left back.

if we are being put off by some wage issues, then we haven't got the correct person/s doing the negotiating.. or genuinely lacking ambition again...

To be serious contenders for automatic promotion next season lets stop putting square pegs in round holes and get in an attack minded right back or use Jonny Parr where he is best suited and strengthen across the team with some real quality and play that quality in its best position, just increasing the numbers of the squad is pointless unless they bring something new in to the club and are played in their best position by looking at these "multi positional players" suggests that there is going to be very little real money invested again this coming season.

More tabloid rubbish...according to The Sun we released Anderson 10 days ago but heard nothing of it on here hmmmm. Anyway we should be looking at attacking midfielders and wingers not another central defender to complicate things!
