Murphy and McGoldrick Could Face England
Saturday, 6th Jun 2015 21:37

Town duo Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick could win caps when the Republic of Ireland face England in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday afternoon (ITV 12.30, KO 1pm).

Murphy, 32, will be looking to add to his 14 caps and score his first international goal, while McGoldrick, 27, has previously been capped once and will also be out to open his goals account.

Ireland manager Martin O'Neill anticipates Town’s 27-goal Championship top scorer being involved at some point.

"Murphy has had a really good season with Ipswich. He's done very well. I would expect him to be on the field at some stage,” he said.

The game is a warm-up for next Saturday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Christophe Berra’s Scotland, also at the Aviva Stadium.

On Thursday Murphy and McGoldrick both played the first half of a behind-closed-doors training game against Northern Ireland which ended 0-0.

Meanwhile, academy scholar Monty Patterson’s New Zealand U20s are through to the knockout stage of the FIFA U20 World Cup, which they are hosting.

The New Zealand youngsters made it through as one of the best performing third-placed sides and will now face Portugal in Hamilton on Thursday in the round of 16.

Would be an amazing achievement if they played, real big confidence boost for both of them.If they don't start they should at least be subbed on at some point, too good to be benchwarmers!

Question: Has any CURRENT AT THE TIME Ipswich player ever scored against England in a full international? I can't think of anyone.

They BOTH start together as the front pair for the Republic against England. When was the last time an international forward line consisted of 2 Ipswich Town players...?? And, with irony, against a decent team like England.

England really are struggling to deal with the Ipswich Town strikeforce as Daryl Murphy goes close again.

Itfchorry: just checked. You're right. 1979. So to Glorydays' comment. Have 2 ITFC players ever started against England? I'm thinking Burley and either Brazil or Wark 1982 when Mills, Mariner and Butcher played?

Thought the two Bhoys did ok. Bit of a lacklustre performance from England, tho'.
