Blues Linked With Liverpool Left-Back
Monday, 6th Jul 2015 22:55

Town are reported to be targeting young Liverpool left-back Brad Smith.

According to The Sun, the Blues are keen to sign the 21-year-old Australian international on loan, viewing him as a potential replacement for Tyrone Mings, who joined Bournemouth last month.

Smith, who can also play at left midfield, was born in Penrith, New South Wales but moved to England as a 14-year-old and joined Liverpool from school.

Capped by England at U17, U19 and U20 levels - his parents are English - he switched allegiance to Australia and played for their U23s before winning four full caps.

The pacy full-back’s only senior appearance for Liverpool came as a 60th minute sub in a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in 2013.

Last season he spent August to October on loan at Swindon before being recalled due to a contractual issue, having made 10 appearances for the League One side.

Smith’s contract at Anfield was up at the end of June but he was offered a new deal, although it’s not clear whether he has signed it. If he hasn’t and moves elsewhere on a permanent basis, the Reds would be entitled to claim compensation from his new club.

Despite manager Mick McCarthy challenging Jonny Parr to make the left-back position his own in the season ahead, the Blues boss is certain to want to bring in another player to battle the Norwegian for the the shirt.

Would be a good signing. Let's hope we have competition for the other side of defence when the season starts.

Liverpool must think something of him to offer new contract

Sounds good. Young and something to prove. Like the sound of 'pacy' as well. So long as he can defend....

Fine with this if it's a permanent. As it stands Pitman is the only permanent signing we have made so far. Loans are all very well but I don't want to see a side full of them. We had all that the other year.

agreed if its permernant then sign him as we need some extra cover, as if you have too many loans well look at boro for an example one striker.

I'm all for strength & depth in all positions & this kid sounds good but shouldn't we also be targeting a RB? Mick hasn't replaced Hewitt who was an out & out RB & Chambers is a better at CB! I can even remember Parr playing at RB last season for a few games so in my opinion a new RB is also a must!

How about a cheeky bid for Kevin McDonald from Wolves unhappy and in last year of contract exactly what we need IMO

Agree with parkinshair..don't mind the odd loanee or 2 but do not want to see 6 or 7 of them.

What is the situation with Matt Clarke then.
If he is going to make he needs to be playing.

I'm all for cover in every position, but I don't want a team of loan players that we had under the previous two managers. What we need is a very good right back so Chambers can move into the centre of the defence. At the moment we have only signed one player on a permanent deal.Just one more good midfielder please as well then things will be looking good for the start of the season.👍

We need a RIGHT back

What ever happens Mick is going to play Cambo somewhere so most likely where he played last season at right back Mick is a stubborn old bugger at times and think this is one of his let downs but we will have to put up with it as long as he is manager because he isn't going to change .

Jonny Parr is the best left back at the club and was last season as well, no disrespect to Tyrone lets hope he is allowed to prove it this season.

Another loan? What about permanent signings? Just Pitman so far, and the chap from Cardiff who is more of a player for the future. I thought the Mings money was going to be reinvested? And presumably the savings made of the players departing. Looks like we are only interested in loans, whilst many other teams are spending.

MM still assessing his existing options, but could be a good addition.

FYI: with Fraser coming in, I have the feeling MM will revert to type and go with 2 genuine wide players this season, in which case he won't need defenders that bomb on as well i.e. Chambers at RB and Parr at LB. all good !

In other words, stop waiting for this mythical RB - may never be coming

I agree with parkinshair and tractorroy1. The priority should be a right-back. That said, if he's quality and it's a loan as in "view to a permanent signing" then it's a good idea.

Really hope Jonny Parr has a good pre-season and nails down left back as his own. I really like him, I think he'als defensively much better than Mings currently is. I'd still like to see us add more creativity and goals in midfield as that's let us down for 2 seasons.

Sounds like a good addition to the squad. And to me, a seasonlong loan - since it doesn't have any recall clause - is just as good as a player who is in the final year of his contract. We risk losing both of them at the end of the season.
Having said that, we don't know about Smith yet. Perhaps he won't sign for Liverpool which makes him a free agent and can be signed, even if we have to pay compensation for him since he has been offered a new contract by Liverpool. But then we have the Mingsmoney to spend if MM rates him...

Interesting; but from Micks remarks recently, when he said squad of 22 is fine,am not sure we will see any of 8m spent, similar to when Cressey was sold.

However it is not now that we would feel the pinch;but later in the season ;which is why am surprised that JAS was unusually marked down in his previous post.

Felt towards end of last season one or two players were showing a little tiredness, including Tyrone in his first full season;and there were also the long term injuries to Luke and Didsy, plus short term abscences which always occur and have to be allowed for.

Not expecting Mick to be a 'tinker man'like Claudio but a small amount of squad rotation could be of benefit towards the end of season.

Still have not started this one yet,and with several weeks of the window left, you never know with Mick and we could still see another couple of players added to the squad;but whether they will cost any money is open to speculation.

Agree with right back sentiments. It's been our Achilles heel for several seasons. Carlos Edwards and now Lume Chambers
