Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday Linked With Murphy
Thursday, 9th Jul 2015 13:25

Norwich City are reportedly considering making a move for Town’s 27-goal Championship top scorer Daryl Murphy, while Sheffield Wednesday are claimed to have made an offer for the 32-year-old Irishman.

According to the Irish Sun, the newly-promoted Canaries are weighing up whether to make an offer for Murphy, with whom they were previously linked last month.

Town are said to be “wary” of doing a deal with their greatest rivals and play-off opponents.

We understand that there is something in Norwich's reported interest in the striker, although whether they follow that up with a bid remains to be seen.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail reports that Sheffield Wednesday - where Murphy spent time on loan in 2005 while a Sunderland player - have made a £4.25 million offer for Murphy. Town are said to want £5 million for the frontman.

Although not one of the many Premier League and Championship clubs previously mentioned in connection with Murphy, we understand that the Blues have received interest from the Owls, who were taken over by Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri earlier in the year.

The Blues recently turned down a £4.5 million offer from Middlesbrough for the Irish international.

Speaking last week, manager Mick McCarthy reiterated his intention to keep the Irish international at Portman Road: “We don’t want to sell Daryl Murphy, we don’t want to lose Daryl Murphy.

“He’s still on a break because he’s only had a couple of weeks [off since being away with Ireland]. That’s what I’ll be telling him, and his agent - we want to keep him.

“He was the outstanding striker in this league last season and it would be difficult to fill his boots. We’re going to try and keep him.”

Murphy has said on a number of occasions he that he has no plans to leave Town as he and his family are settled in Suffolk.

The Waterford-born frontman signed a new contract with Town last July, which has another year left to run with the Blues having an option to extend it for a further season.

cant see it but if we were to sell they tick all the boxes, could get a good offer, wont be in the same league, buy the time we play them again he will be retired and gives murphy a crack at the prem, id like him to stay but I respect him too much and if a good bid comes in I say give him his chance in the prem I know it Norwich but if its what he want then im good with it.

Fed up of these newspapers like The Sun and others just trying to stir it up. He isn't leaving! And definitely not to Naaaaarwich. We have 4 quality strikers, don't need to sell or buy anymore of them, move on.

If the 4.5 million was indeed true why didn't we accept it ,surely Murphy won't repeat his performance of last season. It a heck of lot of money for a 32 year old and indeed would be our 4th biggest sale in our history. Sell and reinvest has to be at that money. Think what we could buy in terms of replacement ,hell we may even be able to go shopping in holland once again ,buy players who learned to love the ball from the age of 8 as opposed to british players who are fought how to get strong and athletic etc etc.

Norwich know its a viable opportunity as the player would not have to move home. His family and him are totally settled in the area ,so even if we accept bids the player is likely to say know ,unless he does not need to move house etc. So Norwich could be on the cards ,and i for one would not begrudge murphy the chance to secure his financial future at this late stage of his career.

Sorry, but I definitely would begrudge Murphg going to Norwich. It's probably imature and petty to most but I'd hate him if he went there. In all this FFP nonsence, where do Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday generate £4.5m in the first place?

there is no way he is going Narrrich, I don't think he would. He knows what it means, no way. As for weds, now they've been bought out looking to splash the cash, again no way. Why would Murph go to an average team.

IF he goes it will be to boro as he does have a north east ish connection having been at Sunderland. I can believe Norwich want to buy him but we would only sell to them for very silly money

Think one of Murph or McG will go and have mixed feelings on both. But hopefully Mick is looking for replacements already and I'd go for Tom Bradshaw from Walsall. Next logical step in his development, good players around him and he's got a goal in him. In fact I'd sign him regardless. What I am more interested to see is what formations Mick tries. We need a quality new RB in any case (as otherwise Mick will always close Chambo) and I think we'd all like to see a ball winning, passing box to box midfielder. But it will be interesting to see.

This is getting boring now. We'd never sell him to the six fingers, he wouldnt go there anyway, hes a rarity in todays game, he actually loves and respects the club he plays for.
And Sheffield Wednesday???? Come on be serious....why go to a team thats gona be fighting relegation/mid table again? Stupid link

It may be time we offered him a better deal. Increase his wages to try to keep him here.

I would hate him to go to Norwich and don't think he would. How many strikers do they need?

no smoke without fire , have no doubt that his agent is beating the drum and also saying the following. Ok Mre Evans you value Murphy at 5 million ,then give a contract worth 5 million. So a new 5 year deal at 1 million a year taking him to agar 37. Not a chance which is why we should be accepting whats being offered i.e. 4 odd million and move on. Will he score 20 plus this season ,i doubt it very much.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph. why would Sheffield offer .25 when we've just turned down .5? Didn't they know about it? Hardly a good idea to piss us off first thing in the negotiations.

Murphy like Dids wants investment in the playing squad to push the club on as he has openly stated . So far we have lost a promising left back and replaced him with a striker our strongest position last year so did MM know we are losing Dids / Murphy ?
And two young loanees

mroberts added 14:04 - Jul 9
What i don't seem to see on this site is Ipswich placing bids with other teams. All the interest is made over our players rather than us showing interest elsewhere. We still need a playmaker and players down our left hand side. We are very right hand sided at present which is the total opposite to last season.

AbujaBlue added 14:07 - Jul 9
mroberts, that simply shows the MM keeps his cards very close to his chest. That is a good thing for us, unlike with our previous managers where we were constantly linked to players who never joined.

Some of you are totally deluded - I have no idea what planet you're on!
You would 'hate' and 'begrudge' him if he moved to Norwich!? Why? Because it's our rival? Would you turn down more money, bigger contract at a rival firm? Where you also didn't have to move? Of course you wouldn't. The guy is 32 - he has 1 year left on his contract, he would relish an opportunity back in the Prem. If Norwich made an offer of £5m then I'd personally drive Murph up the A140 myself!!

But they have Ricky V-W to come back. He's worth £8.5m you know!

Well Said Mr Evans lets get real Murph and McG are on their way, lets just hope MM has replacements lined up, and further more look at the maths behind some of the statements made earlier Naaaarwich got promoted because they had a much higher crowd that us generating more money for the squad, Derby have a far higher crowd average more money if we do sell Murph and McG I can see our gates going down if decent replacements are not brought in, now is the time for the board to show real intent to use the incoming transfer funds to give us a squad to challenge and get bodies back in PR if the money is not used god help us 16,000 average if we are lucky losing money week on week, we need to draw 24-25,000 every home game we wont do that with now crowd pleasers !!

What is it with people wanting to sell Murphy...

We've got £8million from Mings & so far looks like we're going to spend none of it.
Murphy won't score 27, but I wouldn't write off near 20. He's a complete handful, undefendable at times - tall strong not too slow great finish with either feet!

So everybodies grand plan is to sell Murph & McGoldrick - who cost us nothing and are low in wages?
Brilliant plan guys - let's sell them and have to spend more than we receive to get players of their calibre and on their wages!

Season prediction - Murph gets between 15 - 20 all competitions.
Didz gets between 10 - 15 (if he completes the full year)
Sears is going to get 20+ without fail
Pitman scores 1 in 3 - based on appearances I'd put him at 5 - 10

Name me somebody who will get more than what we've got for less than £6 or £7million...
I won't even chuckle at Bacary Sakho!
